First day, both colleges, over with. Elder Daughter came home shaking and in tears. After some talking with me, it turns out that the Spanish class she had been talked into signing up for (by several professors) is, as she had feared, way beyond her capabilities right now. I suspect she won't be alone, as the first thing they were told was to go out and get the textbook in Spanish instead of English (the English version was the one listed in the syllabus), and that the class would be taught entirely in Spanish.
We talked about it, and she decided to drop that class and take the one below it, which the (admittedly well-meaning) professors all thought she could skip. Fortunately she was able to get into the right Spanish class, which starts tomorrow. She had to drop her math class to make room, but that was, she says, more for fun and not a requirement for her Linguistics major. We're out the cost of the math class, but it looks like the system did a swap for the Spanish classes, and she's going to resell the books tomorrow.
So, it'll be an easier semester, and she'll have more time to help Prof Z, who is effusively pleased with Elder Daughter's TA and website design skills. This does mean it'll take another two semesters for her to complete her Linguistics BA, but since she can keep taking grad-level Linguistics courses, it won't be so bad. She's already completed her English BA, and, as I mention now and then, she's welcome to live here and bus-commute to college as long as it takes.
My daughter the scholar. Well, as I keep telling her, she's certainly making the most of college, even if it's taking longer than she'd hoped. Maybe she can even get in a Latin class next year, which she'd love to try, just for fun.
Also and too, with the class rearrangements she has to leave at the same time as the Younger Daughter on Tuesdays. Which makes a very long day for her (with a long lunch break in the middle), but gives me a whole day to do PC maintenance.

Back from Clockwork Con. We had a BLAST! I was too tired to catch up and even PR will have to wait a bit. However, I had to drop this in for you. Presenting H.R.M. Victoria R., Queen of England, the British Empire and Empress of India and her equerry Mr. J. Brown:

At work after an absolutely sleepless night. Couldn't make it out the bedroom door this morning so I went back to bed. After two and a half hours of fitful semi-doze I felt better enough to go in. Throat very scratchy/odd, though. Just recovering from a cold. Don't need or want another.

I'm just sorry to hear that the stress of the original class drove her to an anxiety attack.

I think it was the stress of thinking she'd let us and Prof Z down, but as soon as she made the decision to change classes, she felt better. I pointed out that now she'll have more time to help Prof Z with the class she's TAing, so it's a win all around.

Yesterday, I did all the usual, backwards and in heels while walking on ice, and also put pea gravel doen the driveway so I could push the wheelbarrow filled with heavy/ essential groceries up the driveway. Would that I'd had the energy to flatten the ice ridges between footprints or even better the foresight not to create them, but there y'go. Pushing the wheelbarrow up the hill and then getting out of bed this morning is some sort of index of how much of my upper-body strength I've recovered. Anyway, I've finally taken a photo of the driveway which almost communicates how very horrible it is; mind, this was taken below the top right angle turn, the foot deep top side drain, and the first six feet of drop... It looks way too much like the trail to Camp Muir right now.

the new electronic submission essay uploading thingy is great in the not having to leave the house way, but not so great now it is handed in. I keep checking it to see if it told me my marks yet. the deadline was 18 hours ago. I am not thinking my teacher was poised there one minute after midnight to pick up my much awaited essay. I'm aware teachers do other things in their days than mark my essays, say actually teaching. but is that keeping me away from the page that will eventually show my marks? is it heck. I log on to the computer, I check my college email, I check my essays section for marks.

Well, I've gotten two more applications out today: one to Chicago and one to New York City. I've got two more due at the end of Jan/beginning of February; hopefully I'll get those out this week too.
Of course, if I got the NYC job I've no idea how I'd afford to live there, but...
