So the younger girl's elementary school now has a new procedure - they are no longer leaving one door open. You have to go to that door, and call into the office, and someone will come let you in.
They hope to get a buzzer system installed, but don't know when.
So sad!
I understand why they are doing this, though something like this is a big irritation to many harmless people, and a true deterrent to zero harmful ones.
Mostly, it is just sad.

This spreading of fear and hate is like a cancer in our country.
Actual crime has gone down in the past years, which must scare the gun manufacturers.
Our kids will not escape unmarked by this.

Just listened to an intriguing episode of the On Being podcast, talking about a new, positive direction for Focus on the Family and the Christian Right. Apparently, it's the first in a series of constructive conversations addressing the culture wars that the show has done/is doing. Thought y'all, Christian and non-Christian, might be interested in in knowing, and I'm curious as to whether Sue or anyone else is aware of this and has any insight about it.

Misogyny is just as likely, IMO, in a liberal as a conservative - as is an attitude of respect for women. You either are a misogynist, or you're not. It's not about your politics, it's about your emotional health. If you are a misogynist, your words and actions will reflect it, independent of your political leanings. And I must add: I dislike Bill Maher so much that I avoid reading or hearing or seeing him as much as possible. If he was the last man on earth with me (and I was still fertile), the human race would die out for sure. He and Ann Coulter should get together and start a race of raging egomaniacs . . . on a planet far, far away.

I read this article on Facebook. Here is what I wrote about it: This article should be headed DON'T BE A LIBERAL OR A CONSERVATIVE MYSOGYNIST.
I find it very disturbing that men like Bill Maher, Keith Olbermann, Michael Moore, and Chris Matthews , who often support points of view strongly I agree with, sink to the level of a Rush Limbaugh when discussing women they don't like. Bachman and Palen are horrible and I can't understand how they can take the positions they do and still think themselves good for the country or in any way helpful to their own gender. I actually wonder if they think at all. They are not, however, walking sexual organs and do not deserve to be called such. But beyond the obvious mysogyny expressed by both sides when they are irritable about the actions of a female member of the opposition, there are much more effective terms to use that are not based on body parts. The only counterpoint I can offer is that they respond pretty much the same way about MEN they don't like (Limbaugh, Boener, etc.) in male-specific but similar terms. Apart from the gender bashing, which is wrong whoever does it, I disapprove of the practice because any argument is much stronger when it's conducted from organs ABOVE the waist.

Yes, I do watch it even though I sometimes want to smack the smirk off his face and his vocabulary for the opposition (male and female) is unacceptable. I find his take on certain other issues (those that are not female-centric) to be very interesting. Oddly, despite his previous unfortunate references when she was actually there he treated her respectfully even while he was slicing her politics to ribbons.

sigh.
My state, which is controlled by a Republican "super-majority" in both houses (you wouldn't know it but we'd gone something like 140 years without both houses being controlled by the same party until 2 or 4? years ago. Now with the re-districting ....)
is considering both a mandated ultrasound bill and a bill to allow you to take you firearms to work (but leave in your trunk).
Well, I guess possibly it is equally hard on Republicans living in MA or CA.
Personally, I like(ed?) the 2 party system. I don't think the answer to "no compromise" is some all red states and some all blue states. Very fragmenting.

Yes, but you'd be far less well informed. Yes, but my head wouldn't explode so much. Really when she capped it off by quoting the Fox motto: "We report*, you decide." it was a Jon Stewart worthy moment. *of course, we "report" after we edit for content, not before.

I wrote to both my (Republican) senators yesterday.
Thinking of making a donation to the Gabby Giffords PAC tomorrow.
If I'm going to grouse I decided I had to actually DO whatever small stuff I can.

Here is the website for the Gabby Giffords pac. (I tend to think of it as the direct opponent of the NRA financial machine.) americansforresponsiblesolutions.org/It's got a link for calling your senator. ============== And, since I'm not making any contributions to presidential campaigns this year I figure if I can help fund a Veronica Mars movie I can send some bucks to try to change gun laws.
