Last night I attended a "Stand With Texas Women" rally in downtown Houston. Bob and I used our mighty scooters to get around or else the two hours standing would have been impossible. Stories about the scooters later if anyone wants to hear them. www.click2houston.com/news/1100-attend-rally-in-downtown-houston-for-texas-women/-/1735978/20911776/-/m66yjcz/-/index.htmlWonderful event! It was held on Discovery Green, a pocket park in Houston's downtown. Eleven hundred people packed into that park and spilled over to across the street on three sides! Wendy Davis, whose 11 hour filibuster stalled the draconian "women's health" bill sponsored by our psycho govorner Rick Perry, was there along with a goodly number of the Texas legislature. If this bill passes (and they have the numbers to do it) most of the 40 or so women's health clinics across the state will close. Do you understand how few clinics that is in a place this size? Once the bill passes there will be only five. FIVE! El Paso and all the counties surrounding it will have NO place for uninsured women to go for birth control, prenatal care or cancer screening at all. None! The nearest one will be in San Antonio--600 miles away! This isn't about abortion, which I personally regard as a tragic choice made in the most dire of circumstances, this is about the right of adult woment to make decsions about their own bodies with the help of their own doctors. I might add that in Texas 25% of the population has no health insurance and receives little or no care. Thanks to Planned Parenthood my two eldest grandchildren came safely into this world when their mother had no money and no health insurance. Now our wonderful governor is blocking Obamacare too--but fully a quarter of his constituents have nothing to protect themselves or their families. Protecting women indeed! I haven't felt this good or this righteous about attending a civil protest since the Six Day War! I even signed up to volunteer!

I'm glad you went; I think showing up and witnessing/being seen is an important part of the democratic process that gets ignored too often. I need to do so more often- although up here there's not a lot of protests anymore, just celebrations.

It breaks my heart that the bill she filibustered was introduced by another woman. It must be horrible to hate yourself that much that you would work to undermine your own rights! I heard Perry isn't seeking re-election (although he was appointed, right?), so that's some good news...

Give the guy a uniform and little bristle moustache and set him goose stepping down Main Street Austin.

Thought I'd share this; I remember seeing this way back in 1985, and it's still what I think of when I think of people like the Koch brothers... www.hulu.com/watch/264881#i0,p48,d0 (ETA: I'm not saying I believe in hell, but, still, it makes me grin.

Ugh, just realized, I posted this to the main board by accident. So moving it here. John Barrowman's NOH8 photo. It may be considered NSFW. No true nudity, but it is *ahem* "cheeky" enough to warrant some care when opening.

I am amazed that there is no discussion going on about the government shutdown. Personally I am an unapologic raging liberal who has no patience for antedeluvian facistic spoiled brats who think that they have the right to overturn the law or the will of the people.
IMO positioning yourself against the rule of law, obstructing the legal process, and attempting to hold government hostage to a non-democratic ideology is treason and deserves to be arrested and tried as such.

And you know, I think I'm just worn out from rage. I feel like one of those monkeys being shocked at irregular intervals. At some point, rational discussion becomes nothing more than a comfort between like-minded individuals, because those on the other side are so dead-locked in their way of thinking that there is no point in even trying to make them see any other perspective.

Not that I want the stock market to tank (hello black October) but maybe that would get the attention of Republicans?

I just wrote to both my state senators (both are Republicans, I asked them to rein in the house reps} You can find your senators here: www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfmand here are phone numbers for all house of reps: www.house.gov/representatives/I'm going to call all the TN guys tomorrow (only 2 in TN are Dems, one is mine, so I'm going to call all the Republicans too]. then, since they follow alphabetically maybe I'll start on Texas. Watch out Louis Gomert!

Wendy Davis has (officially) announced that she's running for Governor! I haven't been so happy about Texas politics since the days of Ann Richards!
