I had the coolest day ever. We went to Comicpalooza, Houston's biggest con. Naturally the Queen and Mr Brown were present. We made the biggest hit yet. We couldn't take ten steps without being asked for a photo. The best, though, was that Peter Mayhew--better known as Chewbacca--saw us when we attended his panel and ASKED US FOR A PHOTO! HE wanted one with US!!! Naturally I asked that we get one too because NOBODY would believe it. I'll post it as soon as Bob figures out how to download it from his camera. Regretably his card reader dis not working on either computer. It was coolness upon coolness all day long.

Congratulations and YAY to everybody. We had an OK trip to Ellensburg if you ignore the extra two hours stuck in traffic on the way over. I am hoping the Samman gets the position in Electronics which would let him go back to being diurnal, we saw cactus and lizards (which I photoigraphed) and Great White Egrets and White Pelicans, which were playing peekaboo behind basalt bluffs.
I wish there was something that could be mistaken for public transportation to Eburg, I would visit more often.
Julia, on the other hand, not so much that I had to wash my hair there again.

I look forward to seeing the photos. I miss the ones you used to do. I've often thought you'd love our part of the world to photograph. We see night herons frequently right in the neighborhood and if you go to the shore, apart from the ubiquitous seagulls you can see gray pelicans and sandpipers. Best of all is The Anahuac Bird Sanctuary (about an hour from my house) which is a photographer's paradise in the Spring and Fall when the migrations come through.

Excellent shots! I love black squirrels - they always look so elegant. Dang! It is lightning and thundering like a mother here!

This was a day of the MOST extreme coolness. It couldn't have been better unless someone can fix aching feet. We saw Kristin Bauer von Straten (Pam) from True Blood. She had the floor to herself since she was the only TB guest. She told us that she had been filming all night (episode 11) and then jumped on the plane. She still had "Pam hair" and "lots of hairspray" and stated that she was running on four hours sleep. It showed in the somewhat messy hair but she was as bouncy and funny as I've ever seen her. Our seats were in the front row and several times I caught her looking our way. Later we passed her signing booth and again, even while she was talking to fans I twice caught her glancing at us. No, I do not believe she recognized me, if she even remembers Paleyfest. In a huge conventions full of people in wonderful costumes, I took it as a huge compliment. It was an hour of watching her adroitly side step every question that might possibly tell us ANYTHING about the new season, while simultaneously teasing us relentlessly. I asked the first question, "Knowing that you can't tell any plot details can you at least tell us whether you have any scenes with Chris Meloni". She tapdanced around it for a while and finally said that she liked him very much which can be interpreted any way you want. I also met Claudia Christian who I always enjoyed on Babylon 5. Sorry, no photo. Sadly, nobody was waiting to see her when we walked by her signing booth but when I glanced at her I got back the nicest, most dazzling and friendly smile. I went over and apologized for not being an autograph hunter but that I had the Bab5 DVDs so of course I knew who she was and told her I had loved the show. The smile got bigger and she gave me a few of the souveniers they had to hand out, postcards, bookmarks and such. Very sweet lady. But the very best was the Star Trek panel. Not the panel itself, which as all but inaudible, but the very wonderful Chewbacca himself, Peter Mayhew who sent his assistant over to Bob to ask if we'd come by his signing booth later and take pictures with him. Yes, you read that right, Peter Mayhew asked US for photos. I mean, how cool is that? In case you're interested, I am 5'2" tall. The Bobman stands 6'2". Dear Mr Mayhew was bent over with what I took to be arthritis and could not stand without his cane (in point of fact, all of us were achy and supporting ourselves with walking sticks.). Even so--although the photo doesn't show it because at some moments he was leaned on us--he stood head and shoulders over Bob. What a gentle giant. But I ask you, was that not a wonderful day? I'm going to bed now. Oh my! Wonderful wonderful, Diane! You and the Bobman look awsome - as does Mr Mayhew! Congrats!

In honor of our fallen warriors, S'cubie and real life alike, I'd like to welcome you to the Memorial Day Soulful Spike Society Main Thread, Part 1142 It's Memorial Day weekend, a time for remembering, family, barbecues, parties and the official start to the Summer vacation season. An eclectic amalgamation, that list, but definitely less eclectic than our Website where we have tons of essays and stories honoring our favorite fallen shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly, to name a few. We're a family here, and like most families we have Rules which are a must-read for any N'ubies and a good resource for the rest of us. Not that any of us break the rules, no sir, not us. Our real partying goes on in front of the television set, as we watch our current favorite shows. We can't help but get to together and talk about them on and on and on. We yak about the shows we are watching but we don't spoil anyone who hasn't seen and episode or several. Not here, not there, not anywhere. Except the Spoiled Souls Thread or underneath the ghost button provided in the reply screen. As a family we have plenty to say to each other about religion and politics but we try not to barbecue each other in the process, preferring to stick to hot dogs and hamburgers. Or, veggie-burgers for our vegetarian friends. ;D So, don't be rude, nasty or try to burn us or we'll see to it that you are on k.p. duty for the entire Summer. Before I go, a moment of silence for Patti, Nan and Jan. Enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend!!
A lovely and fitting opener, Onjel!

Is anyone interested in doing an analysis of Avengers (or Thor) kinda like spikecentricity? I was watching it again yesterday and picked up quite a few themes and things underneath that I didn't catch the first time. Good to see you, k8! When I went to see it, I had forgotten Joss was associated with it in any way, then began thinking how "jossian" certain things were - and then I remembered that this WAS Joss. Silly me! And yes, I remember that there seemed to be all kinds of things going on "underneath" but I wouldn't be competent to do a good analysis. About 2 minutes into it, I turned to a friend who had gone with me and asked "is this a sequel of some kind?" And she listed I don't know how many movies that it was related to - I just don't know anything about that "universe."

Great pics and so glad you had a such a great time, Diane.
We had a mini-con here that was called Rathacon (get it? like the star trek movie?).
I took the girls to the rec center for another reason and we saw that the big convention room was filled with people hawking comics and such . . . and with people in odd costumes. The sign said "RATHACON!" and featured several pics of Ricardo Montalbon.
The elder girl bought a ticket and went in for awhile, while the younger one and I went about other business. She came out with her nails painted black and green, and one of them had an image of The Hulk.

Sequel to: Iron Man, Iron Man 2 Thor Captain America: The First Avenger and the Hulk movie with the xover tag scene, I forget which one All of those featured SHIELD agents, Coulson and Fury mostly, the title characters were established in their own movies, Black Widow turned up in Iron Man 2 and Hawkeye was in Thor. ... the movie. ... eponymous movies sound a lot like fanfic summaries... The Avengers, officially Marvel's The Avengers, is known as Marvel Avengers Assemble in Britain, because when we say Avengers we mean the TV series with the leather catsuits, not the comic series. I like watching Marvel comics movies because no matter how wildly they change the comics canon I wouldn't know. I don't read Marvel. This makes it a much more relaxing experience than watching DC movies, which invariably mangle the source text or interact with it in other dodgy ways. And since I read DC for decades I unfortunately care about it. So I have Opinions about DC movies that are unrelated to their virtues as movies. Marvel movies however just have to entertain me on their own merits, cause I never met any of those guys before. And I still haven't seen it, because I have to finish two more assignments by Friday. Why do the best movies come out in essay rush times? All year I have nothing much to do, then essay time comes and boom, Stuff! I do however probably know who dies and what made people LOL and what the coolest action set pieces are about, because spoiler avoidance gets difficult after the first few weeks. But it'll still be awesome to watch. As soon as I finish 2500 words my grades for the year hang on.

I keep running across people squabbling about whether this is in the same verse as the Edward Norton "Hulk" or not, although it seems as if everyone thinks Mark Ruffalo is the best Bruce Danner since Bill Bixby. Julia, which is high praise, I think

Went to a great Mem Day ceremony. One of the speakers was a WW II vet who had been in Dresden, in "Slaughterhouse Five" with Vonnegut. He was very engaging and interesting. Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday.

Diane, the difference between Texas and Eastern Washington is that almost all the rock (and certainly everything east and south of Wenatchee) is black Miocene Basalt that flowed out of the earth in floods. Basalt, Big Sage, Lark Sparrow: Columbia Wildlife Refuge Julia, where we also saw white pelicans and Great White Egrets, neither of which felt like posing.

The prequels are all worth a viewing but The Avengers is about the most nearly perfect "action/scifi" film I've ever seen. There's plenty of character development, a bunch of bonding, neat bits and pieces and plenty of Jossnark.
