CMA awards tonight (Country Music Assoc) -- you can't live in Nashville and not know this stuff -- it's on all the news stations and front page of newspapers.
The relevance here is that it is being co-hosted by Tim McGraw (which makes sense) and Kristen Bell (which, even though I loved her Veronica Mars makes no sense at all) -- I may have to record so I can fast forward thru and watch bits. Besides the dresses are not as classy as the Oscars but can be ....... interesting.

CSA stands for community supported agriculture. Basically, you pay a farmer in advance for a share of the next season's crops. Then every week you pick up a box that has produce that is fresh right from the fields, but also has a variety of things in it. Our box this week had lettuce, spinach, kale, swiss chard, radishes, snow peas, tomatoes, basil and turnips. We only bought a half share, and if this weeks box is typical, it has enough to keep us in veggies all week plus putting some up in the freezer for another time. It's a great way to support a local farmer, know that you are getting the freshest produce, and maybe give you a chance to try out some new veggies and recipes. We've already planned out several meals like a colcannon using the turnips, some of the kale and the swiss chard, a hot caprese salad with the basil, ate the tomatoes as a snack, throwing the peas and some of the kale into dinner tonight, Chicken soup with the kale and chard, and of course planning several green leafy salads along the way. They say they are anticating strawberries in the next couple of weeks too! Mmmm, strawberry shortcake or roasted basalmic strawberries. I can't wait for a chance to try a bunch of new recipes. That is wicked cool! And also, you're making me very hungry.

Speaking of new cars (congrats, Liz --- also, that was/is a heck of a Burn Notice marathon viewing you are doing) ---- I need recommendations. I've driven a van (extended) for 20 years. 10 years in a Dodge Caravan and 10 years in a Chrysler Town and Country (potato/potahto). My van is now unreliable (also has no AC) and I'll be selling it as is for whatever I can get. Looks like Sarah and Tom are going to buy the CRV from us. So I am going to need a new car I know the Honda CRV is ranked really high but I never really got into it -- after the vans it seem small and lacking in power and really sort of "down-scale" with regard to interior amenities (temp, direction, sound, electric seats, etc.) And Jim doesn't really find the ride at all comfortable. And if you actually want to put people in the back seat -- that's really uncomfortable. But the seats don't even fold way down for hauling. But I can't really justify another van just to drive me around town on my errands. Other SUVs all seem to have the same issues as the CRV (low gas mileage but without the hauling capacity of a van.) But, of course, I really don't need to haul anything any more. For long trips we will now probably take Jim's Avalon as it is a much more comfortable ride. One side of me says to just go way downscale and small for running around town. But another side says I'd still like to be able to fit several folks (at least another couple?) in or haul potting soil or plants or boxes to the kids. I've always admired the Murano -- but I haven't actually looked into it. anybody know anything about a mid-size hatchback? Who can suggest a car that is smallish and gets good mileage but still has at least a bit of "luxury" or space. [Also, is it possible to get such a thing for under $25,000?) Thanks- about the Burn Notice viewing. I still have a couple episodes left of season 5, which I might get to this weekend.I've also been rewatching Life, which I have to say holds up even better the 2nd time. Both the Toyota Matrix and the Honda Fit have *great* designs in completely different ways. I would definitely recommend test driving them both. There's also the prius, if that appeals to you. I really liked the pruis, but it's expensive (~$25,000 and up), and there's a learning curve involved with driving and maintenance. So that's why I opted to forego it for the time being and reconsider it later. The Fit is less expensive than the Matrix (~$15000 vs ~$21000), and, as I said, the design on each is very different each in its innovative way. Both would be perfectly fine for puttering around Nashville, I think. the reason I ended up going with the matrix is because the Fit's engine doesn't have the power I would need for the mountains/elevation/wind of Wyoming.

Is anyone interested in doing an analysis of Avengers (or Thor) kinda like spikecentricity? I was watching it again yesterday and picked up quite a few themes and things underneath that I didn't catch the first time. Good to see you, k8! When I went to see it, I had forgotten Joss was associated with it in any way, then began thinking how "jossian" certain things were - and then I remembered that this WAS Joss. Silly me! And yes, I remember that there seemed to be all kinds of things going on "underneath" but I wouldn't be competent to do a good analysis. About 2 minutes into it, I turned to a friend who had gone with me and asked "is this a sequel of some kind?" And she listed I don't know how many movies that it was related to - I just don't know anything about that "universe." I had not seen the other films first either. Now seen them all except the hulk one. The Thor movie is my favourite of the prequels. After reading far too much fanfiction I have a particular soft spot for Loki. How about I create a thread where anyone who is interested can post there and also here (kind of a communal analysis)?

Am I allowed to make a new thread e.g. in the I love TV section or do I need someone else to do it? edit: Just found this when googling avengers analysis and looking for accurate quotes : whedonesque.com/tag/avengers+analysis (not looked yet as don't wanna find out someone has already written down things I noticed) Edit 2 (to avoid repeat posting) with help for quotes from www.moviequotesandmore.com/the-avengers-quotes.html#1 : ** SPOILERS for the Avengers** Mentions of Control : Fury: "NASA didn't authorize Selvig to test the Tesseract" Hill:"If we can't control the Tesseract's energy, there may not be a minimum safe distance" Councilman: "You're dealing with forces you can't control" Fury: You ever been in a war, Councilman? In a firefight? Did you feel an over abundance of control?" Thor (to Loki): "Who controls the would be king?" Nick Fury: How desperate am I? You threaten my world with war. You steal a force you can't hope to control. You talk about peace and you kill cause it's fun. You have made me very desperate. You might not be glad that you did. Tony Stark: It's good to meet you, Dr. Banner. You're work on anti-electron collisions is unparalleled. And I'm a huge fan of the way you lose control and turn into an enormous green rage monster. Tony Stark: You know, I've got a cluster of shrapnel, trying every second to crawl its way into my heart. [pointing to the energy in his chest plate] Tony Stark: This stops it. This little circle of light. It's part of me now, not just armor. It's a terrible privilege. Bruce Banner: But you can control it. Tony Stark: Because I learned how. Bruce Banner: It's different. Thor: My people want nothing but peace with your planet. Nick Fury: But you're not the only people out there, are you? And, you're not the only threat. The world's filling up with people who can't be matched, they can't be controlled. Steve Rogers: Like you controlled the cube? Thor: You speak of control, yet you court chaos. Bruce Banner: It's his M.O., isn't it? I mean, what are we, a team? No, no, no. We're a chemical mixture that makes chaos. We're...we're a time-bomb. Tony Stark: I need you to get to that engine control panel and tell me which relays are in overload position. Not to forget all the mind control scepter and it working on some people (though not Starks's chest) ;D ...and there are probably many more. So the other controls Loki, Loki controls clint (and Selvig mostly) and manipulates the avengers while being a prisoner. The council tries to control Fury who tries to control the Avengers. Banner gets some control over the Hulk and everyone tries to control the Tessaract.

(Maybe title it: Avengers and other movies -- so it has a longer shelf life. Me, I think I need to go back and watch Serenity again. It gets shown a lot on Syfy and not matter what 3-5 minutes I see there is something significant worth commenting on. Avengers was plenty of fun but I think Serenity should be studied in film-writing and making classes.)

I tried the help button and it sent me to a proboards thing which wanted a url of the desired forum Edit: what other things "underneath" the surface have others noticed from the avengers or other films? So far I've got: people not speaking the same language, Conviction/purpose, sacrifice, power, freedom, manipulation/things not being as they appear, fathers, war...

Man, I'm so jealous of Diane learning how to use a gun and Angelique with her CSA box. Thank you, Liz. It was an interesting, informative and highly traumatic experience. Don't get me wrong. I'm no stranger to shooting. I picked up a rifle for the first time at age 13 and the last time I used one was a .22 rifle Ian had that we used in 2005. But a rfile is to a handgun like chalk is to cheese. I sat through the class. Bob and I were the only ones so instruction was quite personal. I couldn't quite manage to keep my finger off the trigger much to the frustration, well concealed, of the instructor. After two hours of how to load, hold, aim, fire and eject together with multiple instruction on safety we all went to the range. I put on my ear protection, eye protection and followed every instruction to the letter. As instructed I loaded ONE cartridge, aimed at the target and fired. I hit dead on. I also dropped the gun on the counter and went straight into panic mode. If the noise doesn't nail you the recoil--which even in small guns is considerable--will. The next hour was a mix of struggling to focus and struggling to contain the panic. The plain and simple fact is that when there is a loaded gun anywhere around YOU CAN NOT PANIC. You can't. You daren't. You mustn't. The last time I had to qull a fear like that was in 1972 in Florida when a tornado hit the house when I alone with two toddler and a terrified German shepherd. I shook, I teared, I hyperventalated... And my final test I scored 226 out of a possible 250--and only 14 points behind Bob who has military experience with hand weapons. We are very proud of me. Tomorrow is the all-day Concealed Carry training.

Hey, everyone! Just thought I would pop by and say hello and see how everything was going in S'cubie land. Things have been mostly quiet here, Jas is dealing with a pretty nasty case of bronchitis but otherwise things are decent. Is Jason all better yet? You know, I will never forget him at Jan's wake. Only a few months before, after my son's death (God, I still can't write that without feeling kicked in the gut), I had that bench put on the nature trail for him, with a quote of Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Douglas Adams' "trilogy" was a favorite of Vince's. So I had also read all of the books during those months, as a sort of homage to Vince, and to feel closer to him. Anyhow, at Jan's wake, Jason came up to me, and out of the blue said to me, "Have you ever read "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?" I stuttered out a "yes," and he proceed to explain something to me - I can't remember what, now. And it meant a lot to me, in a way I can't explain. It meant a lot to me to have Jan's son talking to me about "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Here I was without my son, and here he was, without his mom, and here he was, unknowingly talking to me about my son's favorite book, much as my son might have . . . it made my head kind swirl. But in a good way. It's a killer to watch, no doubt about it - a gut wrencher. Please do!! Same to you.
