Just wanted to say that in this context, "Matsuta" would make more sense as a fashion designer, and there is a Japanese designer called Matsuda. Mostly visible on the internet for sunglasses, but apparently they make clothes too. www.europacouture.com/entire/blouses/blouses6.htmlI've never heard of them, but maybe they're very trendy in LA. Hello, Fleisch, and welcome. Thanks for the input! I'm sure Nan will reply personally when she gets on. Weekends are pretty quiet around here--it's a good time to look around the site. If you are at all interested the best way to get to "know us" would be to visite the website and check out the analyses, essays and fiction. Also, if you click on "Profile of a S'cubie" you can really get to know some of us. On the posting board you might enjoy going to the ScoopMe Archives and reading the top two threads--"Spike's Pants" -- which was the beginning of the formation of the SoulfulSpikeSociety, and the Tributes to BtVs from the end of last season. On the main thread the "Picture of the Week" threads are lots of fun and so is the "Nerd Alert" posted by Diane last week. Make yourself at home. Sue

I was wrong. When everyone bursts in on Angel & Eve they're on the floor behind the couch not the desk. When Angel says that he & Eve will stay and have more sex, they dive behind the couch and that's where they are when Sebassis comes in. That scene was so shockingly funny. Their collective inhales as they saw Eve and Angel in a compromising position was priceless. We all knew it was coming, but that inhale stressed how wrong it really felt. It is also significant that they were on the floor in Angel's office - his center of power in the building. Don't you think that brings him down a peg in everyone's minds? Everytime they meet Angel in his office, they'll be reminded of his indescretion - even though it *was* triggered by something out of his control. Reminding them that Angel isn't totally in control of himself. That trust issue is bound to come up.

Excellent review, Nan... I am so impressed with the posting here. As a n'ubie, and having surfed for awhile to find a good site relating to Buffy/Angel/Spike, I want to compliment the reviewers and posters. I've not contributed much, because I am still wallowing in back reviews and posts. I've only seen Season 1 of Angel so far, and hope to get caught up via FX and Christmas DVD's So... While I really find the analyses of the inner workings of W&H and how the FG fits in very enlightening, I am concerned that JW and ME may be making a mistake with the satire/metaphors for corporate America. Even if very well done, in a creative and intelligent way, will the general Angel audience appreciate the story arc? Since I missed (so far) the development of the characters (indeed, whole characters such as Fred and Lorne) since Season 1, I'm not qualified to assess this plot twist. I'd like to hear from some old timers. Will the general Angel audience buy into the FG being inside W&H? Or will they resent the focus on the corporate theme? Or will Spike's presence alleviate some of that problem? I ask because, from what I'm reading here and elsewhere, this isn't a fan fav episode. I assume Angel's Season 6 prospects are very much tied to its success this season, since it was "on the bubble" last season, I understand. Hiya, KM! Keep Posting, don't fret if you don't get caught up with all the backlog of posts...
Season 1 of AtvS was, in my opinion, the weakest, though it had some fine episodes. You have a treat in store when you see Seasons 2-3.
I'm enjoying the plotline of the Fang Gang running W&H far more than I thought I would. I think it opens up more possibilities than they had had previously, in terms of plot and theme. And Angel will be too busy to brood constantly. Even if he isn't, Spike will be there to annoy him out of that state...[glow=red,2,300]GAIL [/glow]

Another nice effort, Nan.
My favorite line was near the end: "what might Angel himself, far more stressed and uncertain than Lorne, wreak if his inner monster--Angelus--ever were freed? Or what might Angel himself do, were he to lose control and act on his desires? And is it possible to keep those desires bottled indefinitely?"
We keep seeing this theme - demons getting inside dead people in 5.2, the duality of the werewolves in 5.4, Pavayne locked up in the basement in 5.5, now this . . .we are going somewhere with this, we must be.
Can Angelus be freed not through the perfect happiness trigger, but in a slower, more subtle way. . . by the evil that surrounds Angel? As Angel treads into dark gray areas, does it allow the "trapped" Angelus more and more expression?
Whatever happens, no doubt Joss will surprise us.

I think you're definitely onto something here, Spring. We see Lorne's evil side manifested when he's forced to compromise and try to ignore the really evil guys at the party--the skin wearers. Will Angel's evil side manifest later as he is forced to compromise more and more?

Will Angel's evil side manifest later as he is forced to compromise more and more? Yes, but let's not forget how far Angel sunk when Darla came back and Dru turned her and W&H was trying to turn him back to his former evil self...That was the darkest I've ever seen Angel. I'm not worried about him as much as I am Gunn. I see Angel's friends as more vulnerable to corruption than Angel. Perhaps that's the reason Spike has come back, to help keep the frail humans in line. I don't see Angel losing his vision of helping the helpless, but I see external obstacles definitely blocking his way, which will be a source of frustration for him. But that scene with him and Eve behind the couch when he says, "Eve, you stay here and we'll have more sex." was priceless! I almost fell off the couch laughing! I'd like to see more Angel-humour in the future. He was very funny in that episode, and I liked him better than Spike(gasp! Blasphemy!) for once.

Obstacles have been getting in the way of Angel's helping the hopeless already. It was a faulty trigger - Fred's and Knox's "baby" that caused his weapon to fail. Covering Angel in a burning slime. He was very pissed about it, too. The rest of them didn't seem to concerned for his safety. Something is definitely going on with Gunn - all that peeing and marking his territory. Wesley is the only one I don't know about. He seems to be lost right now - and kind of on the outs with the rest of the FG. He asked Angel how he was doing. Maybe he'll be the link between Spike and Angel somehow. I'd like to see him play a major role. The funny bits with Angel were good. But is he going to have to be under a spell every time before we get to see them?

Excellent work, Nan, as usual.
Interesting insights into bottling. Dunno we'll actually see Angelus again this season, but he'll definitely be making his presence known.
The FG running W&H is working for me. I know at least one person new to the Jossverse (she didn't even start watching BtVS until S7), and she's now a regular AtS viewer. Girl has good taste (another Spike lover). Biggest disappointment for me so far...no meaningful interaction yet btwn Spike and Lorne (aside from Lorne's "Easy, slim, easy...." in ep. 2). Waiting/hoping for more. Love the interaction btwn Lorne and Harmony, tho' (so cute).

Great review. I liked the fact that it was a Lorne-focused episode too!
I also agreed with you about Knox being evil. It looks bleak for Fred. I knew sex (or rather sexual tension) would be the key to her corruption! I can't believe she resisted his Spike? But I suspect it was because he was merely going through the motions.
