I actually turned this episode off in the middle.
I turned it back on, but I regret it.
Mental illness is not magic.

I saw on the main thread that you didn't like it but was interested to hear more. I think they were (perhaps?) saying that she WASN'T mentally ill, she actually had an enhanced capability to perceive things around her in the universe that led others to think she had problems but that was a mis-perception/mis-diagnosis on the part of those around her. And, I wouldn't take that to be a generalization of any sort -- just what they needed that character to do for that plot line (which is in itself a problem in that it was very contrived. In fact, so was that business of the trees growing up overnight to protect us and then sacrificing themselves after the fact. AND her sister suddenly returning for no apparent reason whatsoever. Wasn't my favorite episode by any means. Seems like it was mainly there to advance the storyline about Clara, her boyfriend, truth/lying, his devotion to his kids, his eschewing random adventure (and danger), her being drawn to it. etc, etc. Actually, it was the trailer for next week that was pretty darn provocative.

What I put on my livejournal is I'm not interested in debating this. I am very, very angry about the Magic Mental Illness trope, where *secretly* this time it's just all available evidence tricking people into thinking she's ill and really it's *magic real things*, because throwing away someone's meds and telling them to listen to and trust the voices causes actual real world harm. And every time it happens someone wants to explain how this time it was different, and I've had it with this discussion. I know it's new to you, I'm not angry at you, I'm very angry at writers for doing this again.
