has Gunn been being called Charlie in this season? Since the brain upgrade? I dont think he had been before. But scanning transcripts for name useage would be fiddly.
nice review

Excellent analyses, Nan...
You somehow hijacked my brain about the "parental warning" issue. eetah, and all that.
Though I'd say that when he was talking to Nina in the first act of the show, he didn't stoicly retreat, he fled in abject, though somewhat organized, terror.

Great review, Nan!
It hit me too - Spike is the (unwitting) vehicle of Angel's revelation. Spike needs a new vehicle, the old one's in the drink. Yeah, it sure is. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard or so consistently watching AtS before. This ep was as funny as, if not funnier than, the first half of Tabula Rasa.

Excellent review, Nan. This was an episode that I expected to hate. So I was surprised when it turned out to be one of the funniest episodes that I have ever seen.
There was so much to like about this episode. It was laugh out loud funny, while also moving the story arc along. I don't think there is any doubt that Gunn took the deal. It doesn't look good for him, does it? And Wes and Fred - at last!
I loved the Puppet Angel/Spike fight. I agree that Spike let him win. He didn't really have any other choice.
I loved your review of this episode, Nan. The comparisons between this episode and what has happened in reality were spot on. Well done!

Glad you guys liked it. Having a list of quotes at the end seemed redundant, given the list at the beginning. And I hope Diane doesn't mind my editing and then using her poem....I smoothed out the rhythms a bit. But save me from the fury of an indignant poet!

Nice job again, Nan - lively and interesting, like the ep. I loved the section header "Heartfelty Angel." Perfect. Also the part that pointed out Spike's role as revealer of the truth, and your description of Nina and her acceptance of Angel. Finally, some hope for Angel!!

(In the stoical thing, I was thinking of the scene beside her cell. He has all the expression of a rubber boot in that one. Hey! Maybe he's a Cylon!

My hats off to you again for a great review.
I just loved this episode. For once I got to watch it "live" and my 10-year-old kept coming in to see what was causing me to make so much noise. I was almost on the floor at least 4 or 5 times. Just reading that list had me laughing out loud at the computer!
But, as you have so ably pointed out, there's a lot going on under that laughter. I'm reminded of something my mother used to say when we kids would get rowdy, "You're laughing now, but someone's going to get hurt and then you'll all be crying!" And she was usually right.
I just hope Wes and Fred and Angel and Nina get the chance to have a little joy before the crying begins.
Goodness knows we fans are going to be crying soon enough.

Now I'm trying to get on with it all.... Sometimes more successfully, sometimes less.

Is it just me or was anyone else reminded of The Apprentice when Fred touched Angel's hair and he told her "you're fired".

Nan! I thought you were joking - but you put my little list in and made it even better! I'm squeaking in happiness! I'm a full grow'd woman running around my house squeaking because my name got into a Nan Dibble review!
OK. Calmer now. Thank you so much for the mention. Now on to my thoughts on your review.
As usual, I really appreciated your organization into sections of themes. (Something I struggle with, my ideas usually coming to me in a scatter shot way, or, frankly, not at all.) Children - Metatext (relationship to actual network, etc. issues) - Angel - Gunn - Wesley. That really takes us through the main message arcs of the show.
In particular, you made me realize much more clearly the clear parallels to Joss/ME real-life struggles to get this season on the air. Perhaps recent news had put me in a tunnel-vision thing; I got so locked into thinking about that, it's like I forgot the almost non-renewal. And those who don't remember the past......I'm doomed to repeat, I guess.
Gunn. Sigh. I so agree with you. He took the deal. I thought so when he showed up at the office all cool collected and back to full-on lawyer mode. I want to believe that Patti is right and he didn't. My heart wants to go there. But somewhere deep down I know he's in so deep now, he didn't take this chance to get out. And I feel so icky about what could happen to him. Gunn who used to be so clear on the mission.

GAIL So they told us, or those people who knew that story anyways. So in the story one went first, like a herald, and then the big change unravelled? I'm just wondering on parrallels- One big thing the Senior Partners did was all coming undone. What about the other brain affecting thingy- the big memory change? Or am I extending a comparison too far?

Or am I extending a comparison too far? Very enjoyable review, Nan. Loved the quotes and Diane's poem. It's nice having them here to refer back to. I'm not sure that I agree that Spike threw the fight with Angel-muppet. He looked pretty shaken in the elevator, and I think they both quit before actual blood or stuffing was shed. I agree that Gunn took the deal, too. But like Angel, I think he'll also find his self-esteem and get the job done. But he's going to need help to see that he has value just as he is, without the mind-upgrade. Something the head-puppet said when he found out that Angel had been changed into a puppet - about it not being a good thing. That maybe they got more than they bargained for. I have to rewatch, but I got the distinct feeling that they were paralleling W&H and that maybe W&H got more than they bargained for by trying to turn Angel into their puppet. Yep, things are starting to unravel.
