Really wonderful review Rae. I too loved the pentagram information and the elements.
I agree that Angel is the spirit and Spike is fire. I agree with LadyDi that Wesley is more Water - "nurtures, intuitive, revealing of mystery." All that fits with Wesley. He spends most of his time researching to clarify the many mysteries that they must face. He is intuitive, making leaps from research to the practical. I really believe that Angel's slip about the "father will kill the son" prophecy is going to bother Wes and he will intuitively search out what it means.
Fred is air -"clarity of thought, decision making, conscious direction of will..." She is the scientist and thus thinks of things in a clear (to her) scientific manner. She made a conscious direction of will in the first episode, yelling at her new staff to "work the problem" and in "Hellbound" directing all of the others to help her in her quest to make Spike corporeal.
Earth is the heaviest and darkest of elements. It symbolizes stability, ...growth, perseverance.." This seems to refer perfectly to Gunn. He certainly has grown with his newly enhanced brain. He is often deeply engrossed in contracts, whatever. He seems less disconnected than Wes or Angel - stability. In his old life he persevered fighting vampires even though it must have seemed hopeless.
Again Rae, really thoughtful review. You went above and beyond the episode itself. You've raised the bar very high for thos of us who must follow you.

<snip>Where does Gunn fit in - or maybe he won't be part of the 5 in the end? And I'm suddenly reminded of something Buffy said (In Flooded, as she's taking a gun away from the bank guard): "These things? Never helpful."
Of course, that would be a hugely cruel trick to play on both Gunn and us the viewers -- but what if Charles does end up going "all evil" and turns out to be -- like his name -- "never helpful"?
It's not something I ever considered before -- sort of just hit me as I read Karen's post.

I felt the same way after rewatching an earlier episode of Angel where Gunn tells him that Angel and he could never be friends. And I agree - it would be a cruel trick - kind of like Tara cruel. I hope if the series takes that turn, that they leave us some hope that things can be reversed somehow. Anyway, it was just a thought - not that it's really going to happen or anything. Right?

Just the kind of thing Joss loves to do. "Give us what we need, not what we want."

It's not something I ever considered before -- sort of just hit me as I read Karen's post. It would not surprise me at all if Gunn were to turn evil. He is already on the path to corruption by W&H, because he let them mess with his head bigtime, took the fast and easy path to knowledge, and is more at ease in his new role than any of his FG teammates. I hope he resists; because I really like Gunn. He is also, along with Wesley, capable of eventually destroying Angel if he puts his mind to it (they both have a streak of cold ruthlessness).
I first postulated Spike's correspondance to the alchemic element of Fire because of some of the imagery in the last few seasons of BUFFY - Buffy's singing about wanting the fire back in OMWF, Spike referring to his soul as "the spark" in early S7, and of course Spike & Buffy's fiery handhold and his death in CHOSEN.[glow=red,2,300]GAIL [/glow]

Spring mentioned the scene where Spike's hand catches fire in Lover's Walk (S3). You could even stretch it, and say Spike "fired" the Annoying One in School Hard (S2).

Not exactly fire, but something radioactive can burn you. Hmmm.

Both the review itself and the comments on it have been very interesting and insightful. Pentagrams are clearly the way to go! I'm more and more glad of this guest reviewing thing: a diversity of voices and insights, each one well done in a different way. I'm glad we're doing this!
