I enjoyed this ep. a lot more than I thought I would. I'll come clean and admit I hated Wes as he was...a fussy, uptight prig; cowardly, vain and foolish. I was less than thrilled when ME brought him back. Shows how much I know. Loved the interaction btwn Spike and RWP. Poor Spike. Angel's had his soul so long he doesn't run into too many of his victims anymore. Spike's not so lucky. In less than a year he's met two people badly affected by his prior actions. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of that as the season progresses.

I have lots to say about eg's review, but first I'm just going to say: Bravo! We need a hand-clapping smiley face.
Wonderful expositional device--writing a letter!
Contents even better.
More to follow, but I really wanted to be the first to congratulate you. Sue

I have lots to say about eg's review, but first I'm just going to say: Bravo! We need a hand-clapping smiley face. Wonderful expositional device--writing a letter! Contents even better. More to follow, but I really wanted to be the first to congratulate you. Sue Well, wasn't the first, but (consolation) get to quote myself. Here's more: Eg said: What is it about our parents that turns us into children all over again? Not much comment on that--too true, sister. Eg said: she neglects to mention what that says about your heart and sensitivity: that underneath bitter Wesley, badass Wesley, clumsy Wesley, is someone who is loath to see anyone or anything injured. At that moment, we understood that your beating yourself up over Fred’s injury was not just because of Angel’s anger or because you didn’t think that Fred could handle herself, but because you allowed pain to afflict someone you care about.Great insight! eg said: . When it’s impossible to tell your father from a robot, where did you learn all of these things that have made you into the man you are now?Excellent question. Do you understand your strength and courage now? I don’t think you do. At the end of this episode, you claim that you were targeted because the opposition perceived you as “weak.” Why? Because you follow your heart? I guess, in the environment you grew up in, showing your heart was an invitation to have it stomped on, yet you still manage to do that as an adult. Your father talks a good game of loyalty and tradition, but you’re the one who lives out those concepts in actuality. Fred, regardless of your extracurricular feelings for her, is a part of your family more than the council or your father ever was.... As Angel said: “You do what you have to do to protect the people around you, to do what you know is right, regardless of the cost.” And if we look back at all the events of the past 5 years, including your time as a watcher, we can see the truth of that statement and know that you’re the man we want around in times of trouble. Hopefully you will continue to exert that influence on your compatriots in Angel Investigations/The New Wolfram and Hart.As Xander represented the “heart” of the Scooby gang, that’s the role you seem to fill for Gunn, Fred, Angel, and Lorne; and just like Buffy, Giles, and Willow, they don’t always seem to notice or appreciate your importance. This is a great comparison! Loved the whole review, it added a lot to the show and drew out the insight we had into Wesley even better. Sue

Wow. Excellent review. You put your finger on the one thing that I hadn't been able to verbalize - believe it or not, the resurrection spell for a dead bird.
A 7-year-old boy who is upset enough over a dead bird to use magic to try and revive it - and all his father can do is make fun of the zombie bird they would have had. What about the beauty of the attempt, in the first place?
This is why, although it took me a day to admit it, a tiny part of me was glad when Wes shot his dad. A very small part - the bigger part was horrified for Wesley and stunned as hell. But a little voice inside me kept telling me that a man who doesn't see how wonderful a son he actually would up with in Wesley is a major waste of oxygen.
We can be excused - we've only known Wesley for four years. His dad's known him his whole life.

Wow, Erin, this review was fantastic. Wesley as the heart, love that image. R W-P doesn't just belittle his son. When Wesley asks about his mother, R W-P says, "She fine. Sturdy as ever." Wesley's mom has probably been beaten down for years too. She thought he was a prodigy, but SHE couldn't be right, not if R W-P doesn't agree. I really wasn't suprised at all when Wesley kept firing the gun. Hope Fred realizes that Wesley's being protective isn't a bad thing. I posted on the Main Thread that I want to protect the people I love, whether they're stronger or not. It's just something most people do when their loved ones are threatened.

Great letter, Erin!
You have stated so very well what is wonderful, loving, and so attractive about Wesley: his heart - strong, caring, wise.
Your question - How did WW-P become such a wonderful, strong, good man, with a father that's such a prig? Maybe by avoiding the example set in front of him?
great job!
enjoyed your letter thoroughly.

Erin, BRAVA! This review was WONDERFUL! So original, and moving, and right smack dead on center. I am loving seeing the talent we have here - you are a great writer - and you spoke for a lot of us who have seen Wesley go from wimp to warrior.
Congratulations on an excellent and novel presentation!

When you first showed up as Buffy’s watcher on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, we were predisposed to hate you...Sinceerely, the viewers of AngelAhem. What do you mean, "we"? And to think that people didn't believe me back in Buffy S3 when I said that there was a Dark and Dangerous guy underneath that bumbling, fresh-from-the-Academy Watcher... Otherwise, very good insights, and a swell review. Thanks.

Thank you everybody for your kind and thoughtful comments. Don't precisely know why the review came out as a letter, but when I started writing it, it seemed to be the way to go.

My god, Erin, what a fabulous review! First off, what an ingenious way to write it - as a letter. Great idea right there. I had never really thought of Wesley as "the heart" of the group before. I think many of us saw him as "the brain" and seeing him as "the brain" is probably what led most of us to criticizing his behavior of S3. After all, he's the brain, he's supposed to think everything through, he's supposed to be the voice of reason for the group. Seeing him as the heart puts in an a whole other light - one of self-sacrifice, duty and loyalty. Erin, GREAT job on the review. I'm sorry I'm just now commenting on it. This was an absolutely wonderful review.
