I think I rather pitied Wesley in Season 5. It seemed as if whatever emotional or character development he had gained in Season 4, had regressed by the end of Season 5. Pity. Well, I think that the mindwipe eliminated a lot of his growth. I can see your point about that. However, once Wesley had regained his memories . . . then what? His obssession over Fred continued, which seemed a far cry from his feelings about her between mid to late Season 4.

Well, I think that the mindwipe eliminated a lot of his growth. I can see your point about that. However, once Wesley had regained his memories . . . then what? His obssession over Fred continued, which seemed a far cry from his feelings about her between mid to late Season 4. It's interesting you should say that; they were just showing the episode "Origin" on UK Sci-Fi yesterday, and I had the same thought. So I went back and read my review of the episode, and found this line that I wrote to explain that issue: "What memories do give us is context and motivation for our actions." Basically, even with the memories removed, the essential Wesley remained. But, he lack the context for his actions and obsessions and consequently what he'd learned from those experiences. Maybe what I mean is that his decision in Season 3 to kidnap Connor lead to Connor being kidnapped and Wesley's throat being slit and being abandoned by the whole AI crew. BUT, he rebuilt a life away from them, only returning on his own terms. Even though he made mistakes, he wasn't the Wes that needed constant affirmation that he was doing a good job...he just wasn't as needy. Without those memories and that incredibly hard won confidence, well, even if the memories are returned, I'm not sure the growth can be. Hence his comment in Origin that the false memories are there to help them "endure" the past and the gaining and almost immediate loss of Fred was just too much for where he was at.
