YO! Now that I have your attention - the current WIP thread is nearing capacity, and I'll be closing it and starting a new one in a couple of days. Or maybe tonight. Depends how energetic I'm feeling. Anyhoo...I'll carry over the last week or so's worth of updates to the new thread, as I did last time. If you have any suggestions for new organizational methods, now would be a good time to make them, 'cause once that thread gets started, it'll be four months before I'm listening again. Just kidding. Mostly.

The only thing I can think of, now that I've had a bit of time, is that it would be nice to have a title and author list of WIPs being followed in the opening post, excpet that sounds like more work than it's worth. Julia, at least if I had to do it, it would be.

Copied from Main board: In answer to Sue's question: Re your question, the second part of this intended trilogy has been, for practical purposes, abandoned, it seems, as both writers have either gone on to other fandoms or (temporararily) quit writing altogether. Julia would know better than I, but I loved that substantial tale and found its portrayal of druggie Spike most intriguing. I wanted *answers*! It seems now that I'm unlikely to get them. Then Sue said: Sorry to have been unclear, Sue. The first part, with its "gotcha" concerning the revelation, to Xander, of the actual situation of El Dorado and his life and his marriage and his job and the whole ball of wax, is the only part there is, or is likely to be, it would seem. The authors have said they intended to expand on the Faith-Spike situation in the next part...that doesn't seem to be happening. So no--there is no second part. There is no spoon. There is no more of this story, though it's a substantial one in its own right. I loved Eldorado I; it's the abandoned WIP that saddens me the most, because damn their druggie Spike and bartender Faith were intriguing and full of potential. Plus I want to know what Xander's wife is (that Spike says he's scared of) and what was with the mysterious construction company ... *sigh*. Back when I first read part one I sent the authors just about the longest, most glowing feedback I've ever sent anyone, so I've done what I can to encourage them. But although there never was a part 2, there was a teaser posted in one of their journals a long while back; it was Spike, pre-part one, trying to get a fix I think. Um ... wonder if I can find it?

This is sort of a request for guidance: I stopped reading "Beloved" because it had gotten into the same over-the-top babyfic cliches I found cloying in Spikesheart's earlier series, and then, when I decided to give it another try, found that it had moved into Kick the Spike territory, which, considering who Spike is in this story, is just way beyond my tolerances.
If people would still like to know when this story updates, I can keep linking to it, but I can no longer recommend it; I was pretty borderline to begin with, but now it's definitely on my "don't like, don't read" list.
Julia, anyone who wants to read a kid fic worth following, I'll get a list of Alyjude's Everything's Jake series going (in The Sentinel post series story environment)

It now falls on the head of those who are reading the story to find the updates themselves (and post the updates, if they so choose). That said, I wouldn't mind a Sentinal rec. ;D Actually, I have some Sentinal stories that I keep meaning to read, as they were written by the wife of a colleague I recently met and I should really be sending her some feedback.

I've gone skipping through the 852 Prospect archive over the past month or so, and have started again with A trying to be sure that I'm getting all the goodies; the "Everything's Jake" series sort of caught me by surprise, as I don't, for the most part, much like kid fic; this one comes with a whole lot of thought and solid characterisation. The chapters are scattered through both her archive and 852, though, and apparently there's one which I've skipped (I'm guessing it's not labeled, somehow, or in a zine, which would just about figure). I bunked on asking Rachael to open a Sentinel recs thread, though, and as soon as I can get the stories in order, I'll do so. Julia, very slashy fic, for all that the parenting thing is center stage much of the time

They think they're writing *dark.* They don't understand dark at all. It seems they think every discomfort or sadness is a tragedy. The tale lacks a sense of what it actually *is*--philosophically, spiritually. That's the problem for me, rather than the excess of cute, which always was there in potential but is now manifest, now that child Spike is old enough to be tortured/sad/mistreated etc. It's too twee, and too oblivious, for me.

There's holes everywhere: why were the children left alone on a full moon, for instance? And Nathanial and RWP are grotesques, willing to kidnap and torment a child who is, demonstrably, neither vampire nor possessed by any demon. Some times cowriting takes average writers and gives them something special- I'm thinking of "Grief Therapy" as an example. In this case it hasn't happened; the cardboard characterizations and babyfic cliches which had turned me off of Spikesheart's writing long ago have been amplified by having a cowriter. Julia, cranky, since there isn't sufficient new Buffyverse stuff right now, to have what there is be bad

See, here's the deal: I've taken the fatal step of seeking out McShep fic instead of just reading it passively as it crosses my flist. There's a lot of SGA and SG-1 fic out there, and I'm barely scratching the surface. In addition, other shows where we have discussion and reviews have active fanfic communities. Dr. Who, Lost, and Veronica Mars all show up on my flist (Rae has written VM, for instance), although I rarely read them (I read much less now than I have in the past, largely because of actually doing a bunch of other stuff in 3-D).
There's a BSG thread now; do we need threads for other shows? Threads for "other shows", perhaps divided by slash and het/gen? Or is it so easy to find fic in current show fandoms that it's not necessary to have the resource of recommendations here?
I'm speaking out of guilt, a little- I spent the evening reading a Lamardeuse McShep series which, if it was one of her TS fics, say, I'd recommend with enthusiasm. But there's nowhere to put it, and I'm not sure that the Stargate folks need to be led to Lamardeuse, who is one of the biggest of multi-fandom Big Name Fans.
So, yeah: not trying to make Rachael more work, just testing the waters...
Julia, all evily envious of Lamardeuse's ability to put really good words out, over many years
