Here's the place to post the links to (and a brief description of, if you're so inclined) standalone slash recs. Please post works in progress on the WIP updates thread.

And thank you ever so. This is another Human AU, but it is remarkably easy to ignore that fact. Ladycat777, "Co-Mu-Ni-Ca-Tions", S/X in a human version of Angel Investigations. PG-13, at the very most, predominantly for sexual insults. www.livejournal.com/users/ladycat777567068.html?#cutid1Julia, off to bed now.

Uberaeryn, damn her, is bound and determined to make me read and like Spangel. This morning we have "Sausage", wherein Spike takes every opportunity to keep Angel from taking himself too seriously... to say the least. Within AtS s5, NC-17, and, being Uberaeryn, funny as hell. www.livejournal.com/users/uberaeryn/56489.html?view=599721Julia, if people must ship Angel, I like it when they understand his core absurdity

DutchBuffy has a striking short story, "The Bad Man" at her website. In it, six years after "Chosen," Spike inadvertently returns to, and briefly rescues, his insane post-soul self from the high school basement. Buffy is vexed, intrigued. Comfort and some smut ensue. NC-17 for graphic and not completely het sex. home.planet.nl/~dutchbuffy2305/bad_man.htmThis tale is a bit hard to classify, since two of the participants in le sex are Spike himself. Het or slash? Your call. But I'll err on the side of conservatism here and say it's slash.

Tabaqui has a tale in the Spander Color/Sound/Random Object Ficathon called "The Golden Wren." Rating probably R (a lot more talking than doing, when it comes to sex). In it, Spike and Xander (post-Initiative, but Spike's chip has been disabled) are sent on a quest for a magical object in LA. Pleasant rather than gripping. www.livejournal.com/users/tabaqui/60190.html?#cutid1

Pleasant rather than gripping is a good way to put it; a stroll in the park, which sometimes is what I like to read. As different from NMS&L as it can get, in tone and pacing. Julia, a pretty fic rather than a challenging one; I can use some of that

I said something in Uberaeryn's comments the other day about how I was put off by the forced infantilism and romanticisaing of the Sire-Childe bond that was common in S/A fic. It's dangerous to give her ideas, especially for the electronics and home furnishings in Angel's flat: Uberaeryn, "Sweet Childe o'Mine" S/A PG-13 mostly for replacement costs and the most irritating mix CD ever, AtS s5. www.livejournal.com/users/uberaeryn/57259.html?view=615851Julia, grrrr, argh

Yes, I am spending the day at the shallow end of the pool, but hey, it's a fun place. Camisha wrote this fic in the comments thread at the LJ Community called "Big Snog Weekly" and, while I wanted to recommend it then, it's a difficult thing to link to. In any case, it's called "Jamie and the Thing Thing with the Guy Guy" and is a little coda to "Survival Instincts"- Jamie being Xander's ex-lover in the least acrimonious break-up in all of fanfic PG: www.livejournal.com/users/camisha/27250.html?view=787570Julia, some things are just here to amuse

The depth of a puddle but quite a lot of fun! Thanks for the rec, Julia! I think people are avoiding dealing with the depths in one-shots at the moment, if my friends list is any indication. Julia, although there's some awfully angsty stuff in the ficathon lists

"Protective Custody" wrapped up today; if I was reading it as a new fic I very much doubt I would be recommending it, but as I've been following it as a WIP and pointing out updates it seems appropriate to give a unified link. I could just be even more picky than usual over this but this is a product of an enormously popular writer who I've just never been able to get into; there's a lack of skill at written expression, and a tendancy to go for cheap thrills, and an apparent inability to maintain dramatic tension over the arc of the story, that added up just lead me to "meh" Nash Maveric and Cas, Post NFA, Post Shanshu Spike is sent to Xander by The Powers that be, and just not as good as I want it to be: www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=nashmaveric&keyword=Protective+Custody&filter=allJulia, gravely dissappointed

I shan't be collecting it for my archive. An interesting initial premise utterly frittered away into PWP triviality.
