By semi-popular request, here's the place for posting those Sentinel recs that are burning a hole in your browser. As usual, please post a brief description - het vs. slash, rating, and a brief synopsis.

"The Sentinel" went off the air in 1999, after a truncated fourth season which was, in great part, the result of a fan campaing after a cliffhanger ending left the fate of one of the two major characters in doubt. It focuses on a cop, Jim Ellison (played by Jim Burgi), with enhanced perception, and Blair Sandburg (played by the much less well known Garett Maggart, who is, strangely enough, Fiona Apple's half brother) , the anthropologist who is fascinated by sentinels and becomes Jim's observer, then roommate, partner, and guide. It's set in Cascade, Washington, which is in some neverneverland where you can surf on the nearest water and drive into the Cascades in an hour.
Some great BtVS writers, including Anna S and Wolfling, have written TS fics, and I get sucked into the fandom because Lit Gal, who writes S/X fics, wrote a dandy piece of Sentinael Fic called "Recovery" around the prompts for Slash 100. Since then, she's written a Sentinel/Buffy crossover, and is now in the middle of a Sentinel/La Femme Nikita WIP, as well as the Spander WIPs Nan's following in the WIP thread.
The Sentinel has two major archives, Cascade Public Library for gen and het fics rated R and lower, and 852 Prospect, which is for slash fics of all ratings and some adult rated het and gen fics.
I'll be adding the most recent (2006, that is) stories tonight and tomorrow, and also adding recs from 852 Prospect which haven't been listed in the recommendations at Anna S's website.
Julia, and thanks to Rachael for the new thread

Sentinel Thursday has a new prompt every Thursday, and is a place to check regularly for new fic. Recent stories of note in that community include Guilty as Charged, by Flutterbev (one of the BNFs of the fandom) which is a ficlet, post "The Sentinel by Blair Sandburg" (that is the equivalent of "post-Chosen/NFA): community.livejournal.com/sentinel_thurs/312851.htmlJulia, will add to this list when awake!

Lit Gal has written several very good Sentinel fics, and is currently working on a dandy action adventure fic, Shadows of the Past, drawing on Jim's past as an Army Ranger and covert ops agent. It's up to a very tense Chapter 7, and will probably not be updated this week, as she's got jury duty. I will be posting WIP updates here. Julia, OK, brain shutting down, more tomorrow

"Shadows of the Past" is a WIP by Lit Gal, who's S/X Buffy fic Nan is following. It's a "gen" fic, or possibly preslash, so far (one of the constants of the Sentinal verse is that Jim and Blair's relationship is so close and physical in canon that it's difficult for an external observer to tell whether they're lovers or not). The past, referred to in the title, is Jim's past as a military covert ops officer, which, when added to his sensory gifts, make him a useful weapon which some very scary people want to control. Crossover with La Femme Nikita, about which I know less than I know of TS. One of Lit Gal's special skills is her ability to make unfamiliar canon apparent within the context of the story, which is how she got me into reading Sentinel fic to begin with. Shadows of the Past is up to Chapter 8, and Jim and Blair have been jumping from fryingpan to fire and back for most of the story. Action/Adventure, R for violence. Julia, I like her Sentinel stuff much more than the Spander, for reasons of plottiness

Julia, scary ending, though

Sentinal fic is full of cross-overs- mostly Highlander and SG1, but the rare, good, Jossverse fic occurs, too. This is from the 852 Prospect archive, and posits a connection between Jim's spirit guide and the big cat in the White Room. "Order for Myself," by Gunbunny. Jim/Blair, Gunn/Wes, and a learning experience on everyone's part. Slash, PG at most: www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/15/orderfor.htmlJulia, the level of friendly domesticity on the part of both sets of partners is pretty cute

LitGal has finished "Shadows of the Past" with Chapter 12; a very open ending which leaves room for later stories in the same environment. I will add an archive link to this post when she's put the story in archive. Julia, this story is PG-13 or even R, but for violence and torture, not sex

This is a short fic, and one which strikes my fancy because of the quality and subtlety of the storytelling. "In Kansas" by Audra Rose, a way things might have gone, post TSbyBS, if different choices presented themselves. Julia, needing to work back through my hand-written notes, but that would entail being systematic and virtuous

Call Him a Dog by Lanning Cook, doesn't really fill the qualifications for my recs here- I'm trying to stick to new stuff, and stuff that hasn't been recommended from hell to breakfast, but this short outsider's look at Jim Ellison and Major Crimes, post TSbyBS, is so fresh and funny that It would be a shame if anyone should miss it. Julia, OK, I can go to bed now, the Vicodin's finally kicked in

This recommending stuff is going more slowly than I expected, but why should it be any different? Lamardeuse is, if recommendations by people like Anna S are an index, a BNF in the Sentinel Fandom. This month marks the 10th anniversary of the first episode of the show, and so she's come back (from SGA, if memory serves) to write a short fic entitled "Anniversary:" cute, sweet, J/B, and R: lamardeuse.dreamhost.com/ts/anniversary.htmlJulia, you see, it's like this: I'm trying to get healthy and clean and with a nice yard. It takes time.
