This recommending stuff is going more slowly than I expected, but why should it be any different? Lamardeuse is, if recommendations by people like Anna S are an index, a BNF in the Sentinel Fandom. This month marks the 10th anniversary of the first episode of the show, and so she's come back (from SGA, if memory serves) to write a short fic entitled "Anniversary:" cute, sweet, J/B, and R: lamardeuse.dreamhost.com/ts/anniversary.htmlJulia, you see, it's like this: I'm trying to get healthy and clean and with a nice yard. It takes time.

This story has been developing in Sentinel Thursday for over a month, but I'm not secure enough in the habitsof most Sentinel authors to recommend a WIP. The story is very much post-series; Jim and Blair have been working partners for a long time, when relief and triumph after a long difficult case causes Blair's control to slip, and Jim... doesn't take it well. Seven chapters, starting from the prompt "Winter Olympics", by Polly B, with the traditional NC-7 last chapter: community.livejournal.com/sentinel_thurs/327053.html#cutid1Julia, an interesting investigation of some standard themes

Mab Browne posted this fic at 852 Prospect within the past week, and since I've been tempted to reread it, it must be recommendable by any reasonable standard. "Before Sunrise" Jim has a case that leads him to become reacquainted with Blair several years after the series ends: www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/25/beforesunrise.htmlJulia, NC-17 and rather sweet

OK, I give up. This is a really good fic, for anyone who doesn't have much familiarity with Western Washington nor particular knowledge of certain facets of emergency planning in this state. The plot is engaging, the characterizations are strong, and for people who aren't me it should be an entirely enjoyable read. So: "Unsung", by Legion, new this week at 852 Prospect, and well, you know, life's like that: www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/25/unsung.htmlJulia, PG-13, at most; a Major Crimes based post TSbyBS

OK, here it goes: I'm on my third pass through the 852 Prospect Archive, and ready to make recommendations of fics which are not brand-new. I'm not utterly sure why it's been necessary for me to do it this way, but it has been. So, first up, a nifty little first-time story wherein Blair, for once, is not so quick on the uptake, to say the least. PG, Post TSbyBS, Blair's a detective. "Photographic Evidence" by ainm: www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/17/photographicevidence.htmlJulia, all stories slash, J/B unless otherwise noted

So, well, been that kind of a week, and the Alyjude selection at 852 Prospect has boggled me. In any case, another from the infinitely useful Past Seven Days section of 852 Prospect's Quick Search feature. Sassyinkpen has written "Venture Forth" which has, among its other sterling qualities (including both Jim and Blair being convincingly guy-like, always a refreshing turn in a slash piece) a road trip in Washington which was at least planned with a map in hand, if not with actual in-state experience (only maybe so; the SR195 section is way too life-like). It also has a certain amount of convincing imperfections in both the communication and the copulation, which is a nice change, too. Julia, fun read, it is.

Back to new fic, this one by Audra Rose and Sori for the "Harlequin Challenge" where the stories are inspired by Romance novel cliches, titles, or tone. "Drives Me Crazy", 2300 words, PG-13, living with the person you work with can get a little difficult: sori1773.livejournal.com/57378.htmlJulia, great Blair voice in this story

This is an older story- it may even be on someone else's fic recs list. But I reread it the other night, having run away from the interminable A author's list on 852 Prospect, and it struck me that it's one of the most artistically written stories I've read in any fandom. Exit Wounds by Brighid, is a post TSbyBS story where the thing Blair most feared about being a cop comes to pass, and demands a reaction. It's NC-17 but not a PWP by any stretch of the imagination. Julia, and it's ferociously effective

This is a newish story, with a 2005 post date at 852 Prospect. AKABlonded, "Flirting", is a drunken cop-Blair post TSbyBS first time story, hard R: www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/21/flirting.htmlJulia, poor Blair spends a lot of time being miserably drunk in a whole genre of TS stories, of which this is a sterling example

So, recommending Anna S feels really superfluous. If you read slash, and she writes anything at all, you should read it. Really. She sold me Spike/Riley, fercrisakes. Her web site is drizzle.com/~eliade/ and there are many good things there. "A Long Time Looking" is also on 852 Prospect, where I've decided that going through the alphabet by story rather than author makes more sense from the point of view of not getting sated on a single author. It's hard R, midseries, and contemplative, rich in sensual pleasures (like popcorn with real butter) and rather tenuous, at the end of things, but charming. www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/1_2000_firsts/longtime.htmlJulia, and the observations of character and setting are as sharp and real as one expects from this writer

Sometimes a satisfying story works the changes on every cliche there is; "As the Bough Breaks" by Emerald includes all the hurt/comfort cliches of TS-verse, mostly with hurt Blair and comforting Jim, although every cast member gets in on the comfort and protect gig. It's a story of two discrete investigations, with a short transitional scene that does little to integrate them, which, in a story with other faults, would drive me nuts. The writing, characterization, and the plotting of each of the detective stories is adept and the writing, while not inerrant, is strong. R, with implications of NC-17, although there's more implication than description, and the larger part of the story has to do with the mysteries. www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/11/asthe.htmlJulia, not very new but dating since the end of Anna S' recommendations

I've been feeling rather "meh" about Legion, but "Have You Seen This Man," a post TSbyBS police emergency fic where the Blair/Jim slashiness is less important than the situation has convinced me that, whatever else, she can tell a heck of a story when not distracted by kink. www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/25/haveyou.htmlJulia, common everyday Cascade disaster story

I said something in an LJ comments thread recently about how, in my book, someone who writes a lot, and keeps writing, and never improves, is guilty of a moral failing. Alyjude, also Aly Burns, is not guilty of that failing; her writing has improved in technical proficiency, and her plots in naturalism, since she began to write several years ago. It's true, however, that she's kept a very distinct inclination to coziness and happy endings, and as a result her longer fics all have a certain predictability. All of her strengths and that minor weakness are on display in fine form in "I Will Remember You", a post TSbyBS story which finds Blair working as a Deputy Sheriff in North Central California. It's J/B, R, and a nice run. Julia, sometimes cozy just hits the spot

Legion is a writer whose plots are sometimes creative beyond my ability to maintain suspension of disbelief; "Leap of Faith" flirts with that extreme without losing me, for 344K- which is an act of mastery. Some of the themes in this story are far from your basic police procedural, but the storytelling is so deft that it succeeds on that level, too. J/B, NC-17 in very small part, post TSbyBS, with AU aspects. And my favorite of Legion's stories, at least right now. Julia, LONG, though, about a four hour read for me

This one's just cute as heck. The Sentinel Files by Raven, a crossover with The Lone Gunman, which I only know enough of to know it was an Xfiles spin off. The team tries to confirm rumors about Jim, but they've come at a bad time. PG-13, understated slash and very silly humor. Julia, and the Meyers-Briggs test, to boot.
