Hi all! So, I have done my darndest to make the BDM a success. On Saturday, I dragged a couple of my friends to a showing. (Verdict: fun in an Indiana-Jones kinda way.)
Next week, I have made plans to drag another group of friends to see it.
Oh, and my Serenity-hat-wearing Friday actually tipped the scales and made one of my co-workers curious enough to see the movie. He enjoyed it a lot.
When I read the preliminary figures for this weekend, I went to see the movie again (by myself due to the last-minuteness of the decision) to do my part to add to the Box Office totals. (Yes, I am selfless that way. But not at all obsessed or anything. :
You're a giver. I'm planning on seeing it every weekend for a many weekends as they will let me. And I'll be bringing at least one other new person with me each time. ;D
Now, about the important stuff:
Big screen = THRILLING heroics.
Still, there were more than a few times where I wanted to pause, rewind, slo-mo and zoom. You know, theshirtless fightin' stuff & space battle & such. Not to mention savoring and repeating the dialogue. (The following quotage is from memory, so feel free to correct anything.)

Oh my yes! Not only am I wanting the next on already (like Julia), I also want the DVD now! So I can do all that rewind stuff and so on.
Funnies:
Wash: This could get interesting.
Mal: Define interesting.
Wash: Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die? (It's all in AT's delivery.)
Mal: This is the captain speaking. We're having a bit of trouble with our landing sequence so we may experience some slight turbulence and explode.
Simon: River, stay behind them at all times. If anything happens, you run. Don't be afraid to leave them to die.

;D Loved her "I ate a bug" line.
Mal: Doctor, I've taken your sister under my care. If anything happens to her, I can guarantee that I'll get choked up. There may even be tears.
Jayne: Gee, it would be nice if we had some grenades.
Jayne: Gee, it would be nice if we had some grenades.
;D
Kaylee: Simon, are you all right?
Mal: (outraged) Is he all right?
Kaylee: It's been over a year since I ain't had anything between my nethers that weren't battery powered.
Mal: Oh God, I don't need to hear that!
Jayne: I don't mind...

Mal: Oh God, I don't need to hear that!
Jayne: I don't mind...
Loved her doing that line! Mal's reaction was soooo funny!
Wash: Go back to the part where Jayne gets knocked out by a 90 pound girl. 'Cause that never gets old.
Mal: Zoe, you have the ship. And remember, if I don't come back, if you don't hear from me in an hour, you turn around and come rescue me.
Zoe: What? And risk my ship?
Mal: Zoe, you have the ship. And remember, if I don't come back, if you don't hear from me in an hour, you turn around and come rescue me.
Zoe: What? And risk my ship?
Such a quintessential Joss line. ;D
Zoe: You really think we'll make it through this?
Jayne: (looking at Inara, Kaylee, Simon & River) Well, I might. (As with AT it's all in AB's delivery.)
Jayne: (looking at Inara, Kaylee, Simon & River) Well, I might. (As with AT it's all in AB's delivery.)
Sooo true of all of them! But particularly Wash, Jayne and Zoe.
Kaylee: You mean ... sex?
Simon: Yes, that's what I meant.
Kaylee: Hell with this. (Cocks gun) I wanna live.
Layered lines (not a complete list by any means, but I thought these were interesting):
Any line with the word "nothing" in it. Joss turned the whole concept on its head for this movie. Extra rich when you consider how it was used to describe Reavers in the series. ("It's amazing what nothing can do to a man.") Here, it describes the other Pax victims.
River: Make them stop! They're all dead and they're all in my head and I can hear them and they're saying ... nothing!
Mal: You did the right thing.
Book: Coming from you, that means almost nothing. (Funny, heartbreaking and telling. Damn Joss.)
Simon: Yes, that's what I meant.
Kaylee: Hell with this. (Cocks gun) I wanna live.

Oh, such a wonderful observation! I'm gonna be on the lookout for those examples in my next viewing.
Any line with the word "believe" in it. And, conversely, any line referring to being blown about by the wind (Mal & Wash) because belief gives you the gravity to choose your path instead of being subject to the vagaries of the wind.
Mal to Inara: The wind blows north, I go north.
Wash: I am a leaf on the wind. Watch me soar. (Damn Joss. Doesn't he know that funny doesn't *have* to be heartbreaking too?)
The Operative: Do you believe that you must do this?
Mal: I do.
The Operative: Are you willing to die for that belief?
Mal: I am. (Gunshots.) 'Course, that ain't Plan A.
Mal to Zoe: So what do you think. Will she fly?
Zoe: She's been torn up a lot. But she'll fly true.
Ah Zoe. The depths of her grief, to me, was not really apparent unless you've seen her on the series. Her begging Wash to move and her recklessness in the firefight were so unlike her usual self. It's making me sniffly even now. Damn Joss.

I think we got both the Mal and the Zoe that Joss always wanted. Both so deeply wounded by the war. It was heartbreaking to see Zoe react and then immediately compartmentalize. Exactly as she must have had to do so often during battle.
Fan Wanking needed:
Simon's original account of River's rescue is very different from what was shown here in the movie. I've read somewhere that Joss actually admitted that he needed to pull Simon directly into the rescue to make the emotional impact he needed as well as simplifying the exposition for newbies. Joss also added that he, himself, didn't yet know exactly why Simon lied to the others about the rescue. (I got this third hand from someone's post on the Browncoats website. They said it was from a recent Australian Q&A session.)
In the series, Simon seemed unaware of what was done to River's brain until Ariel.
Also questionable is his apparent surprise at River's psychic abilities in the series.
Also, there's probably an interesting story about why and how Simon put River into cold storage for shipping.
In the Spoilers section of S3, Sara pointed out that Mal and Book's relationship was different in the series. In Firefly, Mal never sought Book out for counseling, although he no longer discounted what the Shepherd had to say they way he did in the beginning. The change would make another interesting story.
Also: Kaylee and Simon's relationship seems to have moved backwards. Her crush seemed to have returned to what it was in the very first episode. Simon's feelings, too, seemed to have moved to the place before he acknowledged even having them, much less telling Kaylee he cared about her. (For example, it's hard for me to imagine that he ever told her about the nekkid singing on a statue after a whole lot of sake. Mmmm...nekkid Simon...)
Anyways, that's what I got for now. I look forward to reading everyone's thoughts on the movie. Especially since I'm sure you S'cubiefesters discussed it. **pout**
Linda, not jealous at all. Nope not me. Here's me being not jealous.

I'm proud of you, Linda. You're a rock. A pretty pretty unjealous rock. ;D
