I thought we were allowed to talk about the preview. This stuff was all in the preview. Not the promo. It is general board agreement (I supposed I could actually check the rules) that anything that has been aired on TV is fair game and not considered spoilery. That means the 30 second thingie (I don't know whether you call this a promo or a preview---I use both words interchangeably) that is shown at the end of the episode is up for discussion. (Sorry, zimsham, if you avoid watching it, but it was a group concensus thing years ago that once something is actually aired, even if it relates to next week's episode, it is fair game.) What we do NOT discuss here is anything from any other source or media: websites, magazines, TV listings, or the opening scene for next week which is up at the UPN website Altho, there is a thread for that. That said, since we have a poster who is avoiding even the preview/promos it can't hurt the rest of us to try to remember to maybe put a bold heading on such remarks: "Discussing the preview for next week," so she can avoid that post if desired. These aired previews get even trickier to classify: I watch the Weds nite airing live while taping LOST - reason why I can sometimes only comment in generalities unless I can manage to re-run the tape in my brain. Then I tape the Sunday evening re-run. UPN changes that somewhat. The good part is I get the end credits in fullscreen white on black instead of the local 10PM news stepping all over the credits. But UPN also starts at the first break with a longer preview of next week and repeats a quick preview at least once again before the standard "next week on VM" run of the basic preview before the credits and dancing mice. Not everyone sees this. It's definitely not a 2 min opening scene and may not add a whole lot, but it does air.

Well, we can't cover every possible contingency so it's just easiest to stick with: if it's been on TV, any time, any place it's fair game. But it's also not a horrible idea, out of common courtesy to preface anything you are wary of with: "I saw this on UPN but it's about next week's ep so skip if you don't want to read." I don't think any of us are overly squeamish about stuff that's coming up next week.

If Joss Whedon is the Dark Lord of ripping out our hearts, then Rob Thomas is the Demon King of bizarre parenting.
It does seem as if RT is playing Halfrek to JW's Anyanka, don't it?

I'm VERY late in the party but whatever...
Great review,Sue! You really nailed this episode and all its subtexts.Kudos for the insight!
Just wanted to add that after rewatching all the eps of S2 in a row, this one 's the best (IMHO)...RSG close second with CCBB. I think it's because DR writing's so tight and subtle... The dialogues are to die for! I'm amazed at how talented that woman is. And the direction's so precise that it put to shame a lot of movies I watched recently. The pacing was next to perfect, the director's cut never left a place where my attention was drifting. The perfect mix of great acting(Everybody involved), writing and direction made for an incredibly good ep.Almost too good for TV!
Thanks again for a great read.Keep going.I really enjoy reading your reviews.
Happy Christmas and Happy New Year!

You are totally correct about Diane Ruggerio (sp?). I don't always notice who the writers are but she wrote an episode early in season one that I reviewed and I remember the dialogue being so incredibly clever that I sought out the name of the writer. Now I always take note when she pens an episode. Come back. (And possibly give yourself a name next time if you feel comfortable.)

So I would probably have more to say about this scene if I had seen the Big Lebowski.
Duncan/Logan? Reenacting a scene of 50s domesticity? Veronica as the child watching the parents bicker?
And Veronica and Kendall officially meet. Heh.
Duncan's view on Logan/Kendall. Hee and Hmm.
No way is Kendall 25! Charisma Carpenter is hot, yes, but there is no way she can pass for 25.
Is Logan writing on his shoe?
Veronica just now realized that Duncan wasn't there?
The incorporation issue. 9000 --> 09? That's not a town, that's a country club.
How much easier would your life be if you were indifferent to me?
Duncan's completely undisturbed by Logan/Veronica interaction
Meg's parents are big on the not being spoiled thing.
You can't buy love; bored wives of the wealthy, however, can.
Duncan's sure it's a "he"
Dude, Dick. Your dad's on the run, not dead.
I'm their mother, can't I have some of their money? Yeah.
What do I do now? What did you do before?
This teacher is taking Health class waaaay to seriously.
Gia. Hee.
Chlamydia is not a flower.
Last thing I need is more time in the tub. Eh?
Argyle! Duncan stand-in?
Logan is just a really big bug. Bugs in the last episode.
there are no well respected plastic surgeons. Hee.
Argh, Logan is just digging his hole deeper and deeper.
Edwin's father...WTF?
And the picture of Veronica. Eep.
Writing to Wallace. Again, it's all about Veronica. No wonder Wallace isn't answering.
The real Mrs. Casablancas. Hmm. And Kendall ignored in the background.
When was the last time you had a meal like this? When I was a Brady? Hee.
Well, that's one way of getting what you want.
Not like clown boobs. Hee.
Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon, and wise too late.
French maids uniform. Eech.
You wouldn't believe the stuff you bring in from the outside world.
Don't judge me for my ninja turtles.
God, it's the sleepover from hell.
These must be Gia's friends from her old school?
I'm sorry, did I hurt your feeling (singular)?
If you're looking for a sugar daddy, pick the richest guy in the hotel suite. Words of wisdom.
When the milk stops being free, I stop drinking.
Logan's being a jackass, but he's also completely correct.
So did they or ddn't they?
Ever think about just getting a job? This is my job. Yeah.
So what does all this contribute to understanding Woody's character?
So this Pretty Woman conversation? I heard the exact same one from people I knew when I was in high school.
Gia and Madison, about Dick. Hee.
Hmm. Drug traffiking.
Duncan's overdressed. Hee.
Vent trick came from Logan, to Lily, to Duncan, to Meg.
A secret letter.
So Meg's emails specified boy. OK, that's why Duncan was put on the wrong track.
Grace in the closet. Cree Pee. Ugh.
It's funny- I heard my father give that exact same speech once. Hmm.
Wow, this music is sooooo perfectly creepy.
And Lamb surprises everybody by letting them go. So he has layers!
Parents and children, various forms of wronging one's children. Really interesting, creepy, and well done. It's a sad state of affairs when I can't tell which kid is locked in the closet because all the families are equally cookoo. Yep.
Logan's case vs Duncan's case.
All about Kendall's fate.

Re-watching this ep? I see how very very important an ep it was. I mean, just the stuff with Beaver is soooo revealing, when looking back from the season ending! We started with flashbacks of Beaver's dad and then see Beaver doing well in the business club's mock investment portfolio. Dad's business crashes, taking Dick's imaginary portfolio and their actual RL household finances with it, but Beaver's doin' fine financially. Dick invested in the family biz, but Beaver didn't. And the scene with their real mom? Much more disturbing now that I know more about Beaver's childhood. She's apparently all sweet and lovey-dove mom, the one that bad Dick Sr. was keeping from her kids, but . . . take away the sweet tone of voice and listen to her words - not the endearments she's cooing, but what she's actually saying and not-doing. Cassidy: "So, you'll help us?" Mom: "I dunno, baby." Cassidy: "Maybe we can come live with you." Mom: "Sweetheart, no. You know we spend most of the year in Europe." Cassidy: "I like Europe." Mom: Says nothing, just smiles and pats him on the head. And then there are all the other clues and foreshadowing we get! Woody's incorporation idea is introduced; the theme of child abuse, including creepy vibes surrounding Woody's son; a link between the faux witness doctor and drugs; STDs, in fact, actually clamydia; and even an adult - first babysitter dad - coming on to a minor - Veronica. In retrospect, this is a very crucial ep! ** Oooh, Liz! I really like some of the details you point out - things that really struck me as well, like: Logan writing on his shoe; Duncan's non-reaction to Veronica and Logan; the vent trick starting with Logan (will we see more of this, I wonder?) and the overall creepiness. Or, as you put it:

Or, as you put it: Etaah about everything. I tried not to put "spoilery" stuff in the notes I took, but I definitely was noticing a lot of stuff that I didn't the first time through because now I know the ending. If Cassidy had gone to Europe with his mom and left Neptune behind him (the same thing that Veronica wanted, actually), then he probably would have seen the season out without committing suicide. Of course, he also would have escaped justice, much like his dad. Kendall's constant question of "what do I do now?" Well, it looks like she took the lawyer's advice and went back to doing what she did before. Oh, and that quote isn't mine, 'tis Veronica's. Couldn't think of a better way to sum up the episode. ;D
