Lady Di wrote me a message last November (has it been so LONG?) in which she said, in part;
Well, I never was one to pass up a good idea I could steal from...sooo-o-o-o-o...
Excepting "Hush" which is on everyone's favorite list, your assignment today is to tell us about your favorite silent moments on either of our shows.
You may list as many or as few as you like, but I'm a fan of volume and therefore encourage you to put down as many as you can. These do not have to be extended periods of silence, but may be flashes wherein our heroes (or villains for that matter) simply do not speak. They may be funny, tragic or simply meaningful to you.
Here's three of my many favorites:
1. Spike and Buffy's horrified stare at each other in the instant Willow's spell is broken in "Something Blue."
2. Giles, from the moment he enters his home until he discovers Jenny's body in "Passion."
3. To Nancy's bemused "Is there anyone here that hasn't slept together?" the silent glance between Spike & Xander in "Beneath You."
As always, spelling doesn't count but imagination does.

Well, you did take the cream off the top, didn't you? Anyway, what came immediately to mind is the moment in "Sleeper" when Buffy stands at the top of the stairs to the fateful basement, after Spike says "I don't blame you" and then shifts the stake in her hand and starts down the stairs with the kind of firm steps one takes when there's a suspicion of ice or grease underfoot.

Not in order-
1. Spike and Buffy standing staring at each other in the basement that last night 2. Buffy and Riley 'communicating' at the end of Hush (if was AFTER they could talk, so I'm using it!) 3. the moment in the Bronze at the end of Family when Dawn says 'only losers drink beer'. 4. Buffy and Giles looking at each other in the Magic Shop while he's wearing the Magician's outfit...and his silent removal of the hat.

I have a few for this...
1. Dawn giving Xander a huge, wordless hug the as he walks in the door in "Empty Places."
2. Amy very briefly appearing in "Something Blue." Poor thing doesn't even get a chance to say anything.
3. Buffy and Angel's long stare as he slowly recedes into the fog in "Graduation Day Part 2." I didn't even like Buffy/Angel...but how could you NOT be moved by that?
4. The almost grateful look Xander give to Tara in "The Body" when she expresses her understanding of his angry reaction to Joyce's death. Really nice acting from Nick and Amber in that moment.
5. Three words: Giles discovers Jenny.
6. A funny one: Buffy staring wordlessly at Giles' Dumbledore outfit during the grand re-opening of the Magic Box...thereby causing him to remove the hat. She didn't have to say a thing.
7. The minute or so between the departure of the paramedics and Giles's arrival in The Body. The vomiting, the perspiration on her face as she looks out her back door.
8. The reaction to Xander's engagement announcement. They muster up a little enthusiasm later, but it's clearly forced. As if they somehow knew it would never actually come to pass.
9. The moment when Buffy pulls out her bottle of Holy Water and shows it to Kralik. She says something about punning a moment later...but that single moment is way cool.
10. And finally, my absolute favorite silent moment. Right after Xander says "I like the quiet," in The Zeppo...and then he is. The great majority of this episode is a comic tour-de-force from Nick Brendon...but this silent, deadly serious stare-down vaulted it into the realm of BTVS classic episodes. Jack O' Toole never had a chance.

1. Spike staring at Resurrected!Buffy from the bottom of the stairs. 2. Buffy walking away from Spike just after she's told him, "You're beneath me." 3. William's face just after Cecily's told him, "You're beneath me." 4. The porch scene, at the end of Fool for Love, with Spike just sitting next to Buffy.

Some of mine, in no real order.
Last scene of Fool For Love - Spike walking up with that shotgun to find Buffy crying on the stairs, then just sitting there next to her. *sigh*
Buffy Summers, Class Protector - The surprise and emotion on Buffy's face as she realizes what Jonathan and the class of '99 have given her was wonderful. It still makes me tear up.
Last Moment of Earshot - The silence after Buffy says "if you're not busy having sex with my MOM." to Giles and he runs into the tree crack me up every time.

I see alot of my faves are already listed, but I'm going to list them again.
1. Buffy and Spike sitting on the back porch in FFL 2. Spike seeing Buffy for the first time in Afterlife 3. The look Dawn and Spike give each other on the tower, right before Doc pushes him off
4. In The Body, right after Anya gives her fruit punch monologue (and Willow tries to explain) and before Xander punches the wall.
5. Giles finding Jenny 6. Spike and Buffy looking at each other in the basement in Chosen.
7. There isn't much silence here, but I like the looks Xander and Willow give Spike, before he says "Oh come on" when he tries to get them to go out and "fight that evil" in Doomed.
8. Anya walking up the aisle at the end of Hells Bells. 9. The dead-silent cut to Anya impaled on the wall in Selfless.
There are so much more, but I can't think of them right now.

Let's see: - Spike at the end of Crush, when he realizes Buffy has de-invited him.
- The look on Willow's face when she realizes that Buffy must have slept with Angel in Innocence.
- The scene when Dawn is taking Buffy's cereal bowl, and then takes all the milk, etc., at breakfast in The Real Me. There is some voiceover on this, with Dawn writing in her diary about her feelings for her sis, but the scene itself -the action in front of us - has no dialogue, and I just love the way it is done.

Break in continuoity here- I laughed all the way through the cereal scene in "The Real Me" the other day, what a great "business" sequence! The brief silence in "Anne" between "I'm Buffy" and "the Vampire Slayer". Julia, not good at thinking of more than one thing at a time...

Thought of a few others... does it count if there is music?
The entire last scene of Becoming, Part II from the moment Willow says, "Yeah. She'll be here in a while." to Buffy sitting on the bus looking out the window. I think the scene where Joyce finds the letter on the bed comes before that but it is another great silence moment.
OH! At the end of Anne, after Joyce hears the knock and is afraid to open the door to the hug they share. Actually there are a few moments of silence in this ep that I love. The smile shared between Buffy and Lily right after Lily asks if she can be Anne. Buffy watching out her apt window after her dream about Angel. (And Julia got my other one above...)
Angel's walk on the beach at the end of In the Dark and the scene on the roof with Doyle where they watch the sunset and then he smashes the ring.
The look on Willow's face in There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb as she watches the Fang Gang pour in the door and Angel knows something has happened to Buffy.

I know some of these are already listed, but I'm gonna repeat them.
Giles finding Jenny
Willow crying in the bathroom stall when she finds out Xander slept with Faith
Spike trying to comfort Buffy when she learns Joyce is ill
Spike's face when he's been disinvited
Spike's face when Buffy unzips his pants
Spike "threatening" Joyce behind her back
The entire slo-mo scene in The Wish
Xander running into the hand rail the first time he sees Buffy
The look between Buffy & Spike when Dawn's arm is broken
The look between Buffy & Spike in the basement in Chosen
The look on Buffy's face at the end of Chosen
Edit--How could I forget? Spike & Buffy hand's on either side of the crypt door in Dead Things--one of my favorite scenes in the entire series.

Nice quiet moment, and infinitely sad: Buffy sitting on the porch railing in "Chosen"and looking out into the night.
Quiet moment, except for the sound of wheels turning in his mind: Jonathon figuring out how to help Buffy, in "Seeing Red".
Quiet moment, and a show of great kindness and maturity: Spike on the motor cycle, right before he starts the conversation about bloomin' onions, in "Empty Spaces".
And then there are all of those startled silences when people are obviously thinking "she can't really have just said that" which punctuate scenes with Anya.
Julia, by the way, the snow is mostly gone but it's raw outside

To Nancy's bemused "Is there anyone here that hasn't slept together?" the silent glance between Spike & Xander in "Beneath You." As always, spelling doesn't count but imagination does. 1. The scene at the end of THE GIFT, as Dawn comes wearily down the tower steps and, along with everyone else, gazes at Buffy's body. Spike is sobbing in the shadows, injured and unable to stand up, and no one notices him at all. Xander is carrying Anya, who is wistful at the sight, Giles is teary-eyed as are the reunited Willow and sane Tara; Dawn is crying but trying to be brave. there might be voice-over from Buffy's speech to Dawn atop the tower, but I include it because none of the characters in the scene are talking at that moment.
2. After sending Angel to hell in BECOMING Part II, Buffy walking away, emotionally drained, watching Willow & Giles & Xander from a distance, and then taking the bus out of town, as her mother realizes that Buffy's gone.
3. Buffy in the kitchen working at the sink, with the radio on loud, while her mother is upstairs shouting post-op crazy things (I forget the episode title, it's the one where the creepy thing from the moon is stalking lunatics); Buffy is crying while trying to be busy.
4. The end of SHOWTIME, as Buffy frees Spike and he almost falls, putting his hand on her shoulder and leaning on her. The tenderness and empathy on Buffy's scarred face, the exhausted relief on Spike's face, and the physical touching, is wonderful.
5. I think it's in THE BODY - the moment when Buffy tells Dawn about their mother's death. Dawn collapses in misery while Buffy holds her (Buffy probably would like to collapse too, but she knows she doesn't have that luxury, she has to be the strong one).
There are lots of other moments, but I can't think of them off the top of my head... [glow=purple,2,300]GAIL [/glow]

Julia, really avoiding useful occupation

Everyone else seems to have listed my other favorites above, but I just had to mention:
1. Joyce & Spike in Becoming II (still the one I measure all other funny, wordless moments against)
2. Buffy's complete, shocked, tearful silence at the end of Beneath You (Yes, Spike is talking, but Buffy's silence REALLY speaks too.)
3. Spike's laughing death in the Hellmouth in Chosen. (I haven't decided if I feel cheated out of the true appreciation for that moment by the WB's publicity about Spike joining the cast of Angel or relieved that I was saved from a whole lot of angst.)
