Nothing like getting a text message from your son that reads, "Our school is on fire." Oh dear. that everybody is okay and it's just a wee little fire and easily extinguished.

Not much. I called him and he said they were evacuated and standing outside at the far end of the school, which would be a couple of blocks from the area where the problem was. The local paper's Web site says it started from some Halloween decorations put up by the Theater Department, no one's hurt, and they'll know more once they check the security cameras. Now that I know everyone's okay, I'm somewhat concerned for his violin, which is in that area. That, however, is replaceable.

Nothing like getting a text message from your son that reads, "Our school is on fire." Boys! It's a wonder any of us survive them! Was I hanging out here the time Sam decided to walk home from school? The hard way, where one crosses the BNSF main line, on roads where there are no sidewalks for about 90% of the way? And oh, right, without calling first? Julia, sons are a source of novel sources of worry

Yikes! Hope Jeremy and all his friends are okay and it's something little and not dangerous. ETA: And now I see it is. Yea. Hoping the violin is safe also.

I don't know if it's a blessing or a curse that I'm off today. From my office, I'd be about three blocks west and eight stories up from the site.
And I just now got an update from Jeremy saying "We're back in." Here's hoping they sounded the all-clear and didn't just decide to improve their student:teacher ratio.
Thanks for the concern, all!

Oh! I need the recipe, Angelique! I just bought a mini-muffin pan and a tart maker press from Pampered Chef and can't wait to try out some tarty recipes for Nick. Hey - I just noticed your new name. Happy 'S'cubie' Birthday, Spike's Kitchen Witch! It fits you perfectly, and adds a new dimension to your persona that I don't think all of us knew about. Thank you I'll see if I can scare one up and IM it to you. Fair warning though, my recipes are all a little vague. Measuring cups, I don't need no stinking measuring cups ;D Unless I am baking... or doing candy... Ok I'm just really bad at writing things down ;D Thank you!! Can't wait! Maybe I can 'steal' a few pears from my old house. We had a tree that would bear tons of fruit every year. Branches would break. Last night we ate at a place in Elgin, Il - near Chicago, called "Brother's Soul Food". All homemade southern cooking. We had ribs, and sides of sweet potatoes, potatoes, macaroni, and samples of the rest of their sides - collard greens done to perfection, cabbage, and homemade sweet potato and pecan pie. OMG. It was an amazing meal from a little hole in the wall place run by a fun family. If we have S'cubiefest in Chicago again, we need to go there!! I haven't had a meal out EVER that was as good as this food was. I must have a soulful set of tastebuds.

Now I'm getting all sniffly (and not just allergies). This is, in my humble opinion, the best group on the internets, with the best people. I just had a weird encounter with the printer - I changed the black cartridge last week, and I guess nobody's printed much since then. I tried to print a document, and it came out like the cartridge was out of ink. So I cleaned the print nozzles, and it got worse, and worse... Of course I hadn't gotten around to buying new black cartridges. I finally got the old one out of the bag (I return them to Staples for store credit and recycling) and installed it. It appears to be fine. I think maybe when I changed the cartridge, I put the old one in the printer and the new one in the bag. Head, meet desk. I cannot brain today, I have the dumbth. And since Emily's home today, I'm going to take a nap when the laundry is done. It's Anne's Part Celebration! Do a dance of joy for our very own Red Hot S'cubie Momma! I enjoy reading your posts about your little ant-infested corner of the world. I also know how hard it is to stay at home and raise up the future generation, which you are doing with grace and style. Your girls are very lucky to have your guidance and love. My only complaint is that you aren't selling your crafts yet. Because they are some kind of awesome and I can tell come straight from your heart. Rock on, babe!

Or where it used to be; I think they decided to move it back to the house to save gas. At any rate, it's close, so I'll have to check it out the next time I visit them.
