It's interesting that SmokeMonster!Alex was completely tangible and able to throttle Ben and everything. I'm not sure we really knew that before.

Well, we've seen Smoke!Monster manhandle all sorts of people in its more nebulous form—although whether Smokey and the manifestations people have seen (Yemi, Alex) are one and the same remains a total unknown. And I'd have to check to be sure, but I'm almost certain that when Eko's brother Yemi appeared to Eko it touched Eko as Yemi before disappearing. ETA: From the screen caps I've found it looks like while Yemi didn't touch Eko, he did touch a necklace Eko held toward him.

Rewatching notes:
Great casting job on the actor who played the long haired version of Widmore. His resemblance, especially in the facial features, to Alan Dale is really good.
When Ben started talking about the Smoke Monster, he started saying some word (in a foreign language, maybe) before he broke off and said that they didn't have a word for it.
Maybe this was clear before and I'm only just getting it now, but it seems that coming back to the island wasn't breaking the rules. So whatever wrong he did must have been something else.
I guess Ben sowing the seeds of doubt in Caesar at the beginning was part of his plan to kill Locke which the Smoke Monster alluded to at the end.
I'm thinking that Ben has a thing more about mothers and leaving children motherless than he does about children.
I see that the groceries that Desmond was carrying blocked the impact of Ben's bullet. So it never actually hit him, just knocked him off his feet.
If Ben told Widmore that he was going back to the island the morning of the flight, then that would probably give Widmore enough time to figure out what flight it was and get his people (if the golf course guy was working for Widmore and Illana and possibly others were working for him) on the plane. Hence the reference to the Four Toed Foot Statue (if that's what the reference was to.
I find it kind of satisfying to see Ben so terrified in this episode. I'm pretty sure most of it was genuine.

Some fun trivia from the Lostpedia entry for this ep:- Only four main characters - Ben, Desmond, Locke, and Sun - appear with speaking lines in this episode, the fewest of any episode to date. In fact, the only characters to appear in this and the previous episode are Ben, Locke and Richard.
- For the third time in the series, only 2 of the original 14 characters appear, namely Sun and Locke. The other instances were "The Constant", with only Sayid and Jack appearing and "Jughead" in which only Locke and Sawyer appear.
- Desmond's appearance was his first in 6 episodes, tying Jin for second longest character drought. Only Michael has missed more consecutive episodes in a season while still remaining a regular, when he went missing for 7 episodes in Season 2.
- A deleted scene from "I Do" is shown during the scene in which Ben is judged by the Monster. The scene involved Alex getting into an argument with Ben over Karl and resulted in Alex saying "I hate your guts," which is shown during this episode.

Part II Ah, Ben and Locke made it over to the dock during daylight. So I guess they aren't the ones who shot at the Losties. Poor Ben, Sun clocked him with a paddle. Boo hoo. I've found sometimes that friends can be significantly more dangerous than enemies. Um, only if you repeatedly fuck with them. I'm thinking that Ben doesn't understand the concept of friendship. Ha! ;D Locke had some truly awesome lines, didn't he? Oh, excellent point! I didn't take note of that! That was one very long lasting grudge he was holding, that's for sure. Seeing Ben all off balance and freaked and painted into a corner? Best. Thing. Ever.

"What lies in the shadow of the statue." OMG, is the whole flippin' plane full of more wacky Island Adventurers?!? **hopes this means we get to find the giant four toed statue again** "You alright?" "Never better." Ha! This is all the layers and layers underneath the temple, yes? So, has he found the original Egyptian layer or something? Oh! Anubis? And the smoke monster!!!! **bounces excitedly** Smokey!! And he's standing there like Charlton Heston as Moses or something, seeing his daughter's life flash before his eyes. Now, is smokey gonna eat him? Alex!? WTH?! Is Alex gonna eat him? Zombie!! "It was all my fault." "I know." OMG, this is awesome!! Now he has to be Locke's little minion? **dies from the squeeful happiness** I'm wondering if they're referring to either the Temple or the hole in the ground Ben and Locke went into; it would make a certain amount of sense, at least to me, for the Temple to be near the statue. Excellent question! And this was some kind of "are you one of us" test message, yes? So, she's the new Keamy, I'm thinking, yes? And the other plane folk are her fellow mercenaries? It's like a delicious candy treat, wrapped in ribbon just for us.

Coda Frank back on the smaller island. OK, his name really does sound like La Penis. How unfortunate. LOL. Illana and Caesar declare that they have the conch. What is in that Crate they're protecting? What lies in the shadow of the statue? Huh? In the shadow of the Four Toed Foot? What is up with Illana? Locke and Ben have stumbled onto the set of Indiana Jones. Ben's choice: either leave the island or let my daughter die. Except she's not even your fucking daughter, you bastard. Ben falls through the floor. OK, that was straight out of Indiana Jones. Here comes the Smoke Monster. Hieroglyphs on the walls. Which is news to Ben. What on Earth is that picture? I can't make it out. Here comes the Smoke Monster. Dude. This is AWESOME. Ben's life flashes before his eyes. Just like it was with Mr. Eko. And then the Smoke Monster leaves just like that. DeadAlex! SmokeMonster!Alex gives Ben a stern talking to. Locke lowers a rope. Convenient that it took just the right amount of time to find it. It let me live. I want to embroider this on a pillow.

What, no preview??? I will be seriously peeved if Desmond and Penny's kid got killed in the crossfire or something. Or Penny. That is, if Ben resurfaced and came after them.I have the feeling that Ben was expecting to be killed by Old Smokey and would have welcomed it. G. Yes, I want to see Ben "safely" out of the water and away from the Humes. We've been getting bits and pieces of the last night before the Ajira flight. I will be very cross if anything happened to Desmond's family. Although I expect they need some reason to send him back to the island. Afterall, Ms. Hawking said the island was not through with him yet. leftylady

Now he has to be Locke's little minion? **dies from the squeeful happiness** I'm wondering if it is code or real: Ideas? the temple is obvious possibility or the donkey wheel or - as I read somewhere - Jughead? You know the old adage about the smoking gun, if there is a Jughead shown early in the season it should go off by the end of the season. I also saw a post at zap2it about parallel assault forces: Widmore sending the men of Keamy's crew and now perhaps a female Ilana crew sent by possibly Ms Hawking/Ellie. The poster also theorized about Ellie/Charles as a sister/brother tandem in charge of the Hostiles. If you go with Egyptian temple, hieroglyphics and gods, think about their ancient rulers. There was often a brother/sister ruling pair on the throne. If I recall Michener's Hawaii, the Polynesians also had sibling rulers. So maybe our island did too. leftylady - who needs to catch up on everyone's posts past mid Thursday

RE: the code question that Illana gives to Frank, I loved what they wrote in the twop recap:
"What lies in the shadow of the statue?" Oh, I know this one. Ben Linus's mouth! It also lies out in the sun, in the various stations, on the phone, and basically whenever it's open.
LOL!
