Daniel on the piano. And more mother time. He mysteriously is unable to play with his mom in the room. Hmm. Daniel's problem seems to be a short term memory thing. Seems different than just being unstuck in time. Ellie wants Daniel to accept Widmore's offer. Is she working with him or not? Back on the island. Jack's doctor skills come back into play. We can't be so naive as to think nothing can happen to us. Anyone of us can die. dun Dun DUN! Meanwhile back at the ranch. Sawyer and Juliet prepare to bail. Klaxon. Escalation. Razinsky finds Phil. Why did Razinsky have such a bug up his ass. I mean, I understand why *now*, but when we first met him he seemed excessively paranoid, even for DHARMA standards. The jungle seems so peaceful. Despite the Others lingering in the shadows, I mean. Daniel explains about The Swan. The Incident is them drilling and releasing this energy is why the whole button pushing thing was set up. They can stop The Incident? I been spending so much time focused on the constants, I forgot about the variables. The Losties, people, are the variables. Daniel wants to negate the pocket of energy. Daniel's not taking into account the whole Ben factor here. Which he doesn't know about and Jack and Sawyer don't seem to be thinking about at the moment. He's going to detonate Jughead to cancel out the energy pocket. So Jughead wasn't buried under the Swan. At least not originally. Seriously! He's just, well frankly, he's just such an asshole, right from the get-go.

It looks to me like Daniel is dead at the end of the episode. I'm not sure "Eloise" knows, or believes him, but it does seem that she remembered him and deliberately sent him back to the island when she knew he would die there (remember she told Widmore 'don't tell me about sacrifice!' or something like that) - and I can't figure out why Daniel has to die. Couldn't future-mom Eloise have warned Daniel not to hold a gun on Richard or any of the Others?
And how exactly did Daniel pop into the 70's anyway?
If Daniel's death was somehow necessary, then I can see why his mother treated him the way she did, no deviations or distractions from the course that would take him there, he had to be taught and made to make his discoveries - but what a cold, cruel thing for a mother to do.
I'm so glad that Sawyer and Juliet are still a couple. They are wonderful together.

I don't think Mommy knew that she would kill Daniel, but I am sure Whitmore did. They sure are a trigger-happy bunch of coconuts.

Mom- meet Theresa. If looks could kill. "Square one." How the hell do they know where square one is? It's apparently the same as square 42 and then you just keep going round and round and round and round and round and . . .

But if Eloise didn't know that Daniel would die if he went to the island; then why did she make that remark to Widmore about 'sacrifice' - it seemed more than coincidental to me.

Gail I think she did know. As you said, there was that comment to Widmore. Plus there's her expression when she encouraged Daniel to take the job and go to the Island; even though she tries her best to maintain her usual stoic facade, there's a moment when the look in her eyes is one of pure heartbreak.

But she knew it would happen sometime. Ack.

Waitaminute; Karen, you lost (?!) me...How would 1970's Eloise know Daniel-from-the-present is her son, or at least believe him when he said so as he died?
Do we know in what year Daniel was born?
G.

Rewatching notes:
*I love how Ellie reacts when Penny asks if Ben is her son. "Oh God, no!" Hee!
*How bad of a mom do y'all think Ellie was? I've been reading reactions that refer to her as a bitch, a monster, or merciless and I'm kind of surprised. As far as conflicted mother-child relationships, theirs seems pretty mild. She didn't seem abusive or overbearing to me. At worst she was a little manipulative. However, I've seen many parent-pushing-their-child-to-the-limit-scenarios, both in fiction and real life, that are far, far worse. And compared to most of the other parents we've seen on this show, Ellie seems positively angelic. I'm curious to know what the rest of y'all think because I'm wondering if I'm missing something or I'm seeing this through the lens of my own life or what.
*I will say that I think that Ellie's really dumb for being all against Daniel playing music and pushing him to pursue math and science when music is pretty closely tied to both.

The Doc Arzt site pointed out this fun little Easter egg—check out the image you can see in the wineglass on the right: It must be bunnies.
