Firefly's idea of marriage. Whenever she's playacting marriage this is how it goes: "Will you marry me?" *kissing sounds* "Okay, we're married!" "Honey, have you seen my keys?" Not bad. She's got the essence of it.

Hey all, I went up to visit with Jan and Rich today. I'm sure Rich will provide a more detailed update for you, but it appears the surgery went fine yesterday. Jan's room, which she has all to herself, was about as nice as they get, and the staffers I interacted with all seemed very kind, thoughtful, and professional. It's clear that the cutest couple in America has thoroughly won them over already. Angelique and Jason were visiting for the weekend, and Angelique made Jan an absolutely gorgeous shawl--I was completely in awe of her skills. Rich modeled it for Jan and, lucky for us, Angelique captured the moment on her digital camera. It looked pretty good on him, but even better on its intended recipient. ;D Right now I'm hoping to go back up there next Sunday, weather and other circumstances permitting.

So, lots of music for me this weekend! Saturday was “Future Classics”, the concert that is the finale for the Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute – which is put on by the MN Orchestra and the American Composers Forum (in cooperation with the American Music Center). All week long, the seven selected “emerging composers” have been working one on one with individual musicians, being mentored by seasoned composers like Aaron Jay Kernis, attending seminars on various instrumental groups, being tutored, taking classes on the business and legal side of things, working and reworking compositions in collaboration with the entire orchestra, rehearsing, and then this – the concert made up entirely of their work, one piece from each of them. Unsurprisingly, it meant we got to hear a lot of new music, including 3 world premiers. (The other 4 pieces were all receiving their first performance by a major orchestra.) All the music was fresh and interesting in its own way, but I think my favorite pieces were: In Search of Seasons by Angel Lam and Dessin No. 1 by Kathryn Salfelder. But I also loved Antiphones by Fernando Buide del Real. I thought Shadows of the Infinite by Geoff Knorr had really cool . . . punctuation, I guess I’d call it, the rhythm and just the way it flowed. Roger Zare’s Aerodynamics seemed very fresh to me, Carl Schimmel’s Woolgatherer’s Chapbook was fun, and Incendio by Spencer Topel had fire. They actually recorded the concert too, so if you’re interested, you can listen to the whole thing on the Monday after Thanksgiving (the 30th) on MN Classical Public Radio; they're streaming it on their website on that day. Tune in and you can virtually, and delayed in time, be at the same concert with me. And now today was a continuation of modern music because we went to the opera, and it was Dominick Argento’s Casanova’s Homecoming – which was commissioned 25 years ago for the opening season of the Ordway Music Theater, the very theater I saw it in today. What a fun, and funny, opera! The singing was wonderful, especially John Fanning as Casanova and Lauren McNeese as the “pretending to be a castrato” Teresa. I thought the music was very lyrical, especially for a modern opera and the sets were just gorgeous. Very impressionistic, very moody – perfect for “winter in Venice”. What a musical weekend, eh?! ;D

Welcome to Part 1080 of the Soulful Spike Society Main Thread. where we never fear Canadians.
Canada is a lovely place, but we've got some good stuff right here. Got a hot TV show you're watching obsessively? Discuss it in the I Love, Love, LOVE TV thread for some awesome TV talk, as well as show threads for Torchwood, Doctor Who, Dollhouse, and our ongoing love of our original shows: Buffy and Angel.
Or the vast (maybe not as vast as Canada, but still) plethora of loveliness on our website! We've got fanfic, pretty pictures, and reviews (like our brand spanking [if a little WAY behind] new Dollhouse reviews written by ME).
However, we will drop you in the Canadian wilderness, sans flashlights, with a rutting moose if you post spoilers in this thread. They belong in the Spoiled Souls thread; if you want to talk about casting spoilers, the little ghosty button above is for you and if you want to talk about a show that just aired, please mark in BIG LETTERS.
Want to chat about issues (global or domestic)? Check out our Open Topics Thread. No biting!
Enjoy, S'cubies! Not suspicious, merely Canadian. ;D Says it all, doesn't it?

I just rewatched Something Blue. That's my go-to episode for cheering up. Marc Blucas was really good in the scene in which Buffy explains that she's not engaged. Everyone is so good in this episode. Two questions: Does anyone know what JM was slurping from that novelty mug? In the student films I've worked on fake blood is not a tasty substance. Did anyone here watch Passions? Was Timmy (he's a doll that was brought to life, right?) really down a well? What was that show like? I'm just curious as to why Spike was so crazy about it. Something Blue, always good for cheering up indeed. I never watched Passions, but I have heard it was truly wacky, far more that you would have thought possible. Not sure about the actual well, though. Was it you who was saying you got a very "Spike" vibe off of Crowley on Supernatural? 'Cuz I totally agree!

NGC 253: Dusty Island Universe Credit & Copyright: Star Shadows Remote Observatory and PROMPT/CTIO (Steve Mazlin, Jack Harvey, Rick Gilbert, and Daniel Verschatse) Explanation:[/b] Shiny NGC 253 Galaxy, is one of the brightest spiral galaxies visible, and also one of the dustiest. Some call it the Silver Dollar Galaxy for its appearance in small telescopes, or just the Sculptor Galaxy for its location within the boundaries of the southern constellation Sculptor. First swept up in 1783 by mathematician and astronomer Caroline Herschel, the dusty island universe lies a mere 10 million light-years away. About 70 thousand light-years across, NGC 253 is the largest member of the Sculptor Group of Galaxies, the nearest to our own Local Group of Galaxies. In addition to its spiral dust lanes, striking tendrils of dust seem to be rising from a galactic disk laced with young star clusters and star forming regions in this processed color image. The high dust content accompanies frantic star formation, giving NGC 253 the designation of a starburst galaxy. NGC 253 is also known to be a strong source of high-energy x-rays and gamma rays, likely due to massive black holes near the galaxy's center.

Well, I seem to get the same 5 or 6 Spam messages over and over and over. But as of today I've started getting email from ............ The Brazilian Rainforest. Which is apparently not only sentient but hooked up to the internet and making millions selling its resident Acai berries.
