Once again, a story I liked, and once again, the tiny bits of Coulson are the bits I <3
Tahiti, it's a magical place. He doesn't remember healing. And when he's bothered by that, he starts poking it, and... Tahiti, it's a magical place. And then the Dollhouse keywords. But it's all bothering him a lot more, and he wakes up from Tahiti kind of like it was a nightmare.
Whatever's up with him, they keep leaving breadcrumbs, and it's cool, and then I want to peck them until we get the whole loaf.
But he was thinking about picking up the stick of rage, hate, and your own very worst memories, to try and get at that blank bit in his head. That's getting serious.
Options are still open though. Actual magic, back from the dead for reals, clone body download, android body download, could be anything. Except for surgery and hospitals. That just got ruled out pretty emphatically.
Other characters: I like that there's bits of emotional follow through now. If it's going to be a show that has emotional consequences then it's going to be much more watchable. Even if it's just little jokes like trying to get Simmons climbing then it's still consequences and it demonstrates the emotional connections forming within the team. Also that Ward is trying to be a pretty good guy. And it wasn't just him lecturing about fear or telling her to get over it, he was helpful questions asking guy so she'd get moving. Episode was very about his feelings and backstory, fear and rage, but also tying in to the Asgard stuff with the movies. It's deftly done, since it would be easy for the movie related plots to be the least about the regular characters. But he and Simmons had a thing about fear and families and it started slow and with tree climbing. Or, actually, with the scanning for alien bits earlier - 'out of sight out of mind' was it? Ward shutting things in boxes, on lockdown, is the same way he deals with the memories, but with application of Asgardian that is no longer possible, for either him or SHIELD. It was subtle and themey! ... I've been waiting, I'm excited now.
May continues to be excellent, with very few lines. She's the stoic badass I'm used to seeing in six foot tall blokes. And there was a whole talking / not talking thing, where Ward won't take the wordy help but will follow the silent cues. Into her bedroom. If that's going to be Ward/May I can totally live with that. Two level 7 badass agents have plenty in common and no power imbalances. And if they're just going to be friends now and men and women can get along without dating I can very live with that too.
Skye is less annoying when she's trying to be helpful and failing.
Fitz didn't have much this week, except a tiny bit of getting picked on and pushed around for not being kick arse field agent guy. I'm keeping track of who would take the upgrade if offered, and pressure is going on ... well, all of them, really, but def including him.
Ward and May got the upgrade but it'll wear off. The emotional stuff that goes with it? Well, give it a few decades... So we get shiny stick of metaphor for being sent to war at all. Ordinary mason plus stick equals angry guy with the power expected of Asgard's armies. And, Asgard uses mind control on its soldiers. Not awesome benevolence.
Asgard is being advanced aliens, worshipped as gods, rather than being actual gods with the whole Ragnarok thing to look forward to. Fallible but very long lived. Motives are completely understandable so far. The myth was the ex soldier talking to a girl. He stayed because he didn't want to go back to his rocks and he loved humanity... and pretty girls. And he doesn't worry about consequences because they'll die in a few decades. That's a guy you can get to know, not a deity.
SHIELD has the stick now. I'm left to wonder if they've been accumulating artefacts at this rate all along or if this is just the consequence of things getting more public lately. If the former, the warehouse in Indiana Jones has got nothing on them.
... :-) ...
Agents of SHIELD has got good, it has characters I care about now, they're all getting less annoying the more I get to know them, there's emotional consequences and relationships building up, and there's also consequences of the worldbuilding, plus a theme and metaphor layer that means poking the episode a second time seems worthwhile. Also, it's looking hopeful that this is the new standard, rather than a couple of good episodes. This is good.

We are Gods! Only a bit more effectively than Andrew and crew!
I liked the forest guy(s) - sad about the trees and then the bad angry come out to hurt them. :-( Also liked how the team is encouraging each other.
The Olso scenes are giving me flashbacks to bad bombing shooting guy. Real life berserkers? Not good!!
People suck. A philosophy that I can agree with! Although I always match it with its necessary other half - people are wonderful. People are wonderful and people suck, and sometimes they're the same people.
I KNEW the scientist guy was not telling the full truth!! He should have helped SHIELD rather than tried to go it alone. Now Ward is all messed up and the bad guys have 2 of the 3 bits! Once again a theme of team is stronger than working alone.
I like how Simmons is so happy to find answers that make sense. This is a biochemical reaction!
And I really really like how Ward seeks out help from Coulson, tells him exactly what is going on. Straightforward and not doing that "we'll all hide info from each other. And they use it to find the hidden Asgardian!! Cool!
"If we could cut him open, get some tissue samples." "Or we could just ask him." And May just goes about locking things down. :-)
Heeeee! I just wanted to travel. And he didn't like the rage - like Ward. But he's also still shining them on a bit, being all "I'm a pacifist" and "everything is going to change" and la la la. Hmmmmmmm.
I like how Coulson cuts to the chase about Ward. Not himself, but he knows it. There is an important distinction there.
Coulson!! Jumping in and finding out! Eeep!
Ward - use the difference in your hate! You're angry because of a death - because of caring about someone and trying to help, even when threatened! (Also, the fact that Ward is, like, trained and stuff, makes a difference.
Let May help. Eeeep! She should totally have been afraid of May. Seriously!
May sees it all the time anyway. :-(
But I really really love the scene with Coulson and Asgard dude. Not haunted, and maybe that's what's bugging him, eh?
Ward and May and a bottle. I like.
DID I FALL ASLEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love this love this love this!!!

You could that he only even spoke up about not wanting more words when pushed to it. So I'm not the only one wondering about that, eh? ;-)
