TOPICSAny review is going to need a topic: some specific fact or dynamic or theme of the episode. You should state that topic at the beginning and then discuss it fully, with whatever actions or ideas are connected to it—naming them and explaining them and noting how they are connected to THIS topic. Things NOT to do: - Leaping in and discussing everything you can think of in terms of your reaction to the episode.
- Flailing around randomly without a focus.
- Simply summarizing what happens in the episode without interpretation.
- Embarking on long digressions about what this episode reminds you of either in your own life or anything other than the episode and series (AtS) itself. Brief digressions specifying illuminating connections—from your own experience, life in general, or BtVS are permissible, if kept to the point.
You find a pertinent topic by thinking over the episode and identifying one thing that’s important in it, or to it, then identifying its parts or stages and giving them full and appropriate scrutiny in a systematic way with examples. Some possible topics might include: - Development of a character in this episode. *Imagine a Lorne-centric episode. What is Lorne like? How does he change during this episode? What specific things trigger the changes? What is the impact of the changes on other characters? *Gunn’s had a brain boost. What does that constitute? How does he use it? Does this appear to be a good thing or a bad thing (based on what evidence)? How does it change our view of the character? What has he gained by it…and what, if anything, does he appear to have lost?
- Development of a relationship between two or more characters in this episode. Partners and adversaries. Romantic couples, if any.
- Development of a contrast between characters in this episode—Gunn’s approach to a problem as contrasted with Wesley’s, for instance.
- Development of some part of the overall situation highlighted in this episode—for instance, internal conflict within Wolfram & Hart or Wesley's apparent progress toward the Dark Side or the Wesley/Fred/Gunn romantic triangle (assuming that continues).
- Development of elements in the Jossverse—The Powers That Be, or what constitutes right action, or what repentance apparently means, or shanshuing, or the rules of being a vampire, any other running element that gets special attention in this episode.
- A theme that seems to be running through the whole episode, like connecting, or coping with changes, or defining oneself, or accepting what you can't change, or whatever.
These topics are suggestive, not all-inclusive. Any aspect of the episode that particularly strikes you and that seems worthy of detailed, systematic analysis is appropriate. Find a focus, a topic, and follow through with as much clarity, and as much detail, as you can. STYLE/LENGTHKeep your language as simple and direct as possible. DO use specific examples. DO quote appropriate dialogue. Lead the reader from your ideas back to the episode. Pin your assertions down to specifics: things the characters do and say. There are no rigid length requirements, but 2-3 single-spaced pages, in 12 point type size, should be about right. DO feel free to re-read approaches taken by past guest reviews for ideas and approaches you might use. DIVISION OF FOCUSNote: This has not yet proved a problem in practice, so I've cut this discussion. DEADLINESThe adjusted deadline for both principal review and guest review is noon, the Friday after the new ep airs. Naturally, the sooner the better. Send guest reviews to me (ndibble@cinci.rr.com), preferably as attachments. I’ll do a little light editing if and as needed, and then send them to Vlad for posting. MISCELLANEOUSFurther essays can be added later in the season, if somebody particularly wants to take one on, especially for an episode whose full meaning and impact isn't evident until later (like Skip's duplicity, for instance, or Jasmine's real motives). Such follow-up essays will also go through me, but nobody will need formal permission to do one. Just have at it as the muse and inspiration strike. If you have any specific problems or questions, wave at me either by e-mail or a Personal Message on the board and I’ll do my best to respond helpfully. The whole reviewing process is what we make it. And we want to make it illuminating and fun. So high spirits, rather than formal plodding, are the order of the day. Contractions and jokes are not only permitted but encouraged. _________________________________________________________ Feel free to comment on these guidelines (by adding "replies" or via PMs). If there are questions, PM or e-mail me and I'll try to be as helpful as possible.
