Sorry for starting a whole new thread w/o asking, but couldn't find anywhere else to post this. A review of a shooting draft is here www.aintitcoolnews.com/display.cgi?id=17749Not terribly spoilery, but maybe a little.

Basic plot stuff (from "Wash" interview on Sci-fi.com)
"In the TV show, if you know it, the characters of River [Summer Glau] and Simon [Sean Maher] were some of the people on board the ship [and] are wanted by the law. And it got us into trouble a lot. They're still wanted by the law in the movie. But the Alliance, the law, assigns a guy to catch her, who's really, really good at his job. That's all I can say." The "guy" is called simply The Operative and is played by British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor (Amistad)."

The scene opens with Mal, Zoë, Jayne, and River busting in on what looks like a general store in a little frontier town and forcing everyone down on their faces on the floor. Everyone stands still except for River, who wanders through the "hostages" (for want of a better word), listening. Finally, she points at one of the men on the floor. Zoë looks at her questioningly, and River, with a look of mild irritation, jerks her head in the man's direction.
A couple seconds later, the man reaches for a gun, but by that time Zoë's got her gun to his head. "Know what a hero is?" she asks. "It's someone who gets other people killed."
The man throws his gun away. Cut to Mal and Zoë opening a safe - with very little in it. Sarcastic exchange, followed by Mal pulling a secret lever that opens up a big, white, modern, Alliance-style vault, complete with Alliance guards.
Brief discussion with Serenity, then we cut back to Mal discussing with the head guard where they should put his wound. ("The leg's good,") Obviously, says Mal, they don't want it to look like he just gave up, do they? Meanwhile, upstairs, River has a horrible vision involving Reavers, and we get a message from Serenity that the Reavers are here.
Cut to Mal ordering the Alliance types to lock everyone in the building into the vault unless they all want to die.
And that's what we saw.
Reavers - JW says we actually get to SEE them this time.
And the word from JW and SG is that River is much more in control than before. NF described it, tongue in cheek, as "The iron fist in the velvet glove".

Hmm...not sure how I feel about that; they were much scarier when you couldn't see them. That's probably true, although I submit that we can't know that - having never seen them. But...most scary things are more scary when they're not quite seen. As, for example, the aliens in Alien. The sequels just don't have the scare power of the original, because the aliens are out there to be seen so much of the time. Oh...and JW wouldn't confirm or deny the "limited appearance" of one of the original cast...the book cover from this morning reminded me yet again about the absence of Book or Inara (not sure which would bug me more).

I think it's a mislead: my guess for "limited appearance" is Alan Tudyk, since he was filming "I, Robot" around the same time.

Okay, I just ran across this from an article that I stumbled upon today. Huh. It’s like torture. However, he obviously was being/had been told to be restrained so he then said he’d just ask one question. The inevitable monologue followed for a few minutes then Sean just looked blank so he rephrased it into... what do you think will happen to the characters. Groan. However, I think Jewel’s brain must have entered catatonic shock at this point as she then divulged a bit about what Joss has said to her about Serenity 2. The plan is to start it off with a very shocking first five minutes and then the rest of the movie is a flashback to show how we reached that point. Now this seems a nifty idea, particularly as it means we can spend some quality time with both Book and Wash without this being being the standard sappy blurry memory shots that such scenes normally are. Of course now I’m hyper curious as to what the shocking scene would be. Serenity exploding? Someone getting shot? One BDH shooting another? River and Inara being caught in flagrante? Anyway, intriguing possibilities. However this did rather step on my question which was to ask if they’d still appear in the sequel if their character was to be killed on page 1. Jewel looked a bit shocked at the idea and Sean was equally bemused, even when I clarified that it would be opening titles and then him going *splttt* (told you I made a farting noise in front of them). Sean said yes, he’d appear even if it was just to be squished; Jewel was still keen to survive till page 101.Entire text of the article is here. On the other hand, perhaps Joss and his actors should talk to each other sigh.
