I'm really frustrated at the lack of good, in-canon or extension of canon X/S, S/G, X/G fic, and have a weakness for X/G/Shanshu!Spike fics. I tend to like fics which are subtle and implicit, and where exposition is a slow unfolding. By all of those measures, I should love "Watching" by A Prelude to a Kiss, but I just can't. It's quite possible that my primary bitch is with format: 24 less than 500 word chapters, luckily all linked one to another as well as in tags, which means the story is interrupted by the constant need to load a new screen, in a page format which is insufficiently contrasty to be easily read. You may need to stick ?style=mine after each url to read. Part of it may be that, while I prefer slow and subtle and implicit, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. A lot of it may be that the basic emotion for all three characters is anomy, and the tone is much too flat. Or maybe I'm just too picky, and since the checklist says this is a fic I should recommend I do. Julia, but without any great surge of enthusiasm

Dr. Squidlove does it again, with a tale of time travel where Ripper shows up at the Bronze, mid season 3, and... whackiness ensues. The Giles Thing: members.iinet.net.au/~tentacles/buf/gilesthing.htmlThere's another, entirely different, Xander Time-Travel fic which will finish in the Spring For Xan community tomorrow, but it's rather a coincidence, I expect. This one is X/R, R, and humourous; that one is closer to NC-17, and much less funny. Julia, lovely things, both

So, over the past two weeks, Mireille719 ans Soft Princess have been posting a wonderful Xandercentric Fic called "Everything Xander Knows about Time Travel (He learned from Back to the Future)," which is a sort of converse to the story above: the traveller, time, and intent are all different, as is the tone and structure of the story. Today's story is also considerably more than five times longer, consisting as it does of five long chapters. The similarities, aside from the time travel, are strong where the writers are strongest: in both stories, Giles and Xander are very much themselves, behave in ways which are in harmony with their canon selves. Ripper differs more between the two stories, but in Dr. Squidlove's tale he's not yet gone up to Oxford, nor has he met Ethan, where in Mirelle's and Sofy's he's older, although not more wise, a drop-out living with Ethan in an East End squat. mireille719.livejournal.com/1483258.html?style=mine (link goes to 5/5, with other chapters linked in headers). The story is Post-Chosen, post broadcast canon, X/R, X/G, and up to NC-17. Julia, and has a nice after effect that makes Giles' s1-3 self more understandable

And speaking of Mireille . . . I've grown fonder of Xander/Larry fic over the years than I would ever have thought possible, mostly due to stories like The Full Xander Harris Experience by Mireille. Done for the Spring with Xan ficathon, and a very lovely and subtle season 3 "what if". Chapter One, in which Xander decides that Larry needs to hang out with him to fully understand that Xander is not gay, no not at all. Chapter Two, in which Larry learns a bit more about Sunnydale than he probably wanted to know. Chapter Three, in which Xander realises he's not completely straight, but makes a possibly not too bright decision. Chapter Four, in which Xander tries to make things right.

Magritte, Post Chosen anomy, real estate, Xander and Spike by Savoy Truffle and Apreludetoanend: This is not a Story. This story has no summary; this story has no way to describe it which would not bruise it. Go, read. Julia, trust me, it's worth the dreaming

Second of the mutable Savoy Truffle & Preludetoanend X/S mature fic This Is Not Enchiladas. No, no it's not. Nor was whatever happened in Mexico, nor is whatever "it" is. Julia, go with it; it's worth it

I am intrigued by the idea that there will be several stories all starting with the same opening premise but going in different directions. They are a stunningly good writing team and I hope they continue to collaborate.

The final story of "This is Not a Trilogy:" This Is Not My Beautiful Wife which is also not the field of dreams nor is it the Montel Williams nor Jerry Springer show. Julia, nor does it explain about Mexico, at all.

Entrenous (an excellent writer herself) posted an intriguing question on Bloodclaim - what was the first S/X fic you read? The stories, recs, and links that followed were like a stroll down memory lane for me. Many of the ones mentioned were ones I first read, many moons ago. Take a look at it, here.

Mireille's unlocking her fic, by the way, but tonight there's a new fic, for the Male Slash Minis second Giles round- Somewhere Else the Tea is Getting Cold where there are five first kisses, not all of them happy. X/G, PG-13ish. Julia, lovely thing, as all her fics are

Reremouse knocks one out of the park again with "Forty-eight Hours in the Life of Xander the Bear and the Vamp Who Came Back" to which I can only add: Snark and proof that not all gay men are meticulous house-keepers: reremouse.livejournal.com/119232.html?style=mine#cutid1Julia, funny, funny, and what do you mean I wasn't supposed to read more Spike until Nevermind was finished.
