Opens with one of those views so dark that even with the brightness and contrast turned all the way up on my monitor a large part of the screen is black. Some bricks showing, or rather the mortar between bricks, some big round things, some light coming from off to one side to make everything all dramatic.
bag drops in, fat bloke in leather jacket drops in, some running, then scary shadow person who turns out to be Kate all silhouetted agains the light. Very dramatic, high contrast, very little color, all dark and light.
Not much contrast between cop lady and bad guy, both of them wearing black and blue.
Interrogation, and cop lady hair, still back in a ponytail, very fuzzy, looks all hot, sweat on her forehead, hair coming undone kind of like her temper.
Angel, also wearing black (surprise!) with some lines in it for variety, all light and shadow again. Big square bits lit from above, but apparently not by sunlight because the light doesnt bother Angel. This is my only complaint about the really dramatic light, it comes from peculiar and vaguely implausible places. I mean 'up' is all very well when you are in creepy underground places, but who puts a spotlight on a grille in their floor? Yet there is one in the ceiling down here all shiny.
The tunnel bits look familiar. like the round bit of tunnel has a pipe half way down it like had the gem of amarra under the loose brick. Yes, I know, is a film set. At least having repetetive sewers is plausible, having repetitive rocks and caves on Andromeda is just insane.
Big green slime tentacle monster. Slime is usually green. snot monsters.
Angel has his sleeves pushed up, bare forearms. Cordelia has sleeveless shirt and denim shorts or a skirt. Doyle has a shirt and a jacket, as usual. The shirt is black and white and swirly, the jacket dark brown. He is the most covered up even though everyone else is dressed for hot weather. Being covered more important than being comfortable? Or demons having different comfortable temperatures?
(yes, today where I am is hot and sticky. so I'm thinking about it as I watch.)
Cordy is wearing red white and blue. Her hair is also pulled back roughly not particularly looked after. Only a watch on her wrist. Not exactly work clothes, not covering enough to be armour, but simple and practical. she might fuss about dry cleaning tentacle spew but that outfit doesnt look like it would need dry cleaning, so it must be that tentacle spew is tough.
Cordy's speech is funny, because Doyle, and squiddy tentacles. But its also spot on. Angel might be supposed to connect with people but he has a tendency to take 'his' people for granted and use them.
Cordy now covered in smudgy and green, making the big speech. Angel ignoring it. Great communication there.
Cordelia's mother phoned. Later theres cop lady dad. parent issues?
also, Cordy has parents still in contact at this point. I didnt remember them being mentioned after Cordy moved except in a past tense lost all the money way.
Angel has changed his top. He's all grey and not stripy. So his associates are stuck in slimy clothes and Angel is all cleaned up and in clean clothes.
also theres some very pink flowers right behind Cordy that just kind of distract my eye.
Kate in same jacket as earlier but different other clothes, lighter top I think.
ooh, pretty double lamp with red shades in Angel's office. Not electric? I think its the kind that burns stuff. Cant be sure. And theres a thing just to the right of it near the walls, I think its a statue of an eagle. Something with wings. Tricky to tell from the front but the shadow is clearer. Theres a matching winged thing on the other end of that bit of furniture but its visible for about a second.
Time passes- Cordy is clean again, and new clothes. Still red and white on top. But now a jacket over whatever. Armoured up cause she's in a mood? More things round her wrist.
Doyle wearing something green and not actually ugly, with short sleeves. No coat in the office with just C around. Watch on left wrist and shiny on left middle finger- I reckon is the claddaugh he was wearing in a previous ep but is far too far away.
Angel in I think the same grey stuff he was wearing before, so is later but not a new day.
Doyle and Angel eye conversations. Angel actually trying, cause Doyle 'asks'. Cordy says "Lame." which it was, but hey, trying!
New shot and we can see the shirt closer (big check pattern, but still not ugly. wow.) and see it is over a dark blue t shirt with foreign writing on it. One of those kanji languages, I know not enough to recognise at all which. Might be the same language he had on a different t-shirt, which leads me to idly speculate on which languages he reads. Also that makes twice Doyle is wearing an incomprehensible language. Subtly foreign and mysterious.
He has something on a cord round his neck dissapearing under his shirt. So now I am left to wonder what, and why they bother if we cant see it.
"anger management issues" therapy speak again. Cordy being very Californian (as far as I can tell from TV cliches
). Sensitivity theme. And Angel comparison?
Its "Daddy" and "Katie". Speaking as someone who spent years trying to not be Becky I get a reflexive shudder. But most people put the y ending to be affectionate. So even in the office they are nice to each other? Well apparently he was planning on being a couple of meters away and not saying hi, so, not so much.
Cop uniform roughly the same color as the not uniform jacket Kate chooses to wear. Only with more badges and things on it.
You can watch the smile on Kate's face just sort of fall off by stages. She is happy to see him but cant keep that as the conversation goes along.
You know this cop place is the whitest set. Big shiny brightness. None of those all concealing shadows like in Angel's place. All bright.
and note the sad music comes in at the end of that father-daughter conversation.
8843 Hyperion way.
what is it with the word Hyperion? Turns up here, then the hotel later.
www.trinityofiniquity.com/screening/sr_s1e6.htmhas some interesting stuff, including a location section mentions Hyperion way.
there's a Hyperion Way in Playa del Rey, or there's a Hyperion Ave that runs through LA, Silver Lake and Echo Park.
Hyperion is the Titan of light, an early sun god.
so Angel ends up living in the sun god's house? interesting choice for a vamp.
apparently Hyperion was thrown into Tartarus by Uranus and got out again for a while, until Zeus et al defeated the Titans and sent them to Tartarus ie a hell dimension, one where the punishment fits the crime (like Tantalus and the dissapearing food and drink)
myths get complicated and my brain seems to have shut down. Also, not entirely relevant until the hotel later.
Angel with the night vision scope. Um, vampire? Seeing in total darkness? Also its a very high tech bit of gear for an old fashioned guy. And he successfully used either a car or cell phone. Go Angel. Even though this strikes me as odd compared to later.
"Talk to them. They like that."
theme for the day
Angel's disguise... he gets so goofy sometimes. And all the colors. Is that like a sunset shirt? And a really really bad hat. And also, why? He was wearing black and his long coat a minute ago (I think the long coat, judging from the cuffs that were visible) and then he took the time to strip off and get like this? Priorities. Very wierd plan. Yet an amusing visual.
Kate in the same clothes as earlier so is all in one day.
Angel's undershirt is white. which seems somehow odd when everything else he wears is black. but light hidden, seems like him.
the bad guy is all greys and beige. eeeevil!
The W&H building is really pretty. step pyramid, ziggurat, aztec place for human sacrifice. Simple representation of hierarchical power, the few in the pointy bit lean heavy on the many below them.
also they have a big sign out front saying very plainly what they are yet also saying absolutely nothing about what they really are. hiding in plain sight.
The office is all shadows and stripes, blinds almost totally closed, light outside yet he chooses to be lit by lamps. Big globe off to one side (global company, rule the world), lots of wood and brass, power office not just little people office.
And once again suit=evil. Wierd ziggy zaggy pattern on that tie. Dark colors.
and oh yeah, threatening the cop lady's life. I'm so scared.
The trouble with having an arch enemy is after a while either they win or they start to look incompetent. W&H didnt win much.
Cop lady still in blue and grey, lighter blue now. Cop blue but shades of grey too. she has earrings but only single little shiny studs, nothing fancy at all.
Cordelia greets Angel with a smile. Not mad at him no more.
Angel wearing something that might be cop blue instead of black.
Cordelia in green top, no sleeves, and black trousers. hair loose. watch plus beads on her wrist. orange shoes she kind of waves around. lookit! new!
Angel all 'men dont notice' and Doyle, first thing he notices. heh.
Doyle in the black leather jacket today. and a beige thing with a zip, looks fuzzy. he wears more layers and warmer than anyone else.
which reminds me of Giles, who wore them for armour (they even stopped that crossbow bolt. mostly.)
Kate at the bar after work, same clothes as at work. Not getting dressed up to go out, just stopping in to unwind.
Her dad in shades of brown and lots of crossed lines, being depressing.
