I'm so conflicted on the whole Lindsey/Angel relationship. On one hand, I feel that Angel gave Lindsey the chance to prove himself to be trustworthy, and on the other hand (snicker), I feel that maybe if Angel had tried a little harder to help Lindsey like he did Faith, that Lindsey would've turned himself around.
Then again, that's probably me wishing very hard that Lindsey would've teamed up with Angel, because I think he really did admire and 'love' Angel, in that love/hate kind of way. So - yeah, I think Angel was trusted and dear to Lindsey, as much as Lindsey was able to trust and love anyone. Lindsey was pretty damaged.
I'll join you in the coflicted place, 'cuz I would have loved to see Lindsey join "team Angel" too. He's just such a fascinating, dark, damaged (well put - by the way) character. And yet, every time he's given the chance to make a choice . . . he pulls away.
I never really thought of the idea of Angel trying harder to help - like he did with Faith. Because you're right - he doesn't try very hard. Heck, a lot of times he almost actively seems to be pushing the other direction. Is it because he figures Lindsey really really chose the path he's on, more so than Faith? Or because Faith is a slayer? Was Faith helped more because she went to jail and was forced (well, as much as you can force a slayer - you can't tell me she couldn't have busted out any time she wanted) to think about things and work thru her stuff?
You really see that in Blind Date, which comes right on the heels of Angel's mission to save Faith. The thing is, Faith, at that point, was already past the whole "my childhood sucks and that's why I'm evil," past the "ooh, evil tastes delicious," and into "please kill me." Lindsey never got anywhere beyond "my childhood sucked." And I think Karen's not far wrong when she says it's because she's a "hot chick with superpowers." Also, she's 18, superpowered, and given no boundaries or limits. Lindsey is an adult; at least in his mid-20s if not older, hard childhood but had enough brains and werewithal to put himself through law school and land a prestigious job at an incredibly young age.
And here's another thought: Almost all of Faith's kills were personal. Maybe all, because she would do anything The Mayor asked because he showered her with affection. Even though Wolfram and Hart paid her to kill Angel, she accepted because she wanted to throw down the gauntlet to him so he would end her life. Lindsey's killing was always done at a remove, a nice metaphor for damaging corporate policy.
