Yeah, the demon spurted stuff that paralyzed Buffy - it definitely seemed to relate to the way her sexual desire for Spike, and the wildly satisfying sex she was having with him, was "paralyzing" her - she knew the relationship was wrong but couldn't end it. Notice it was Willow who killed the demon - that demon had no power over Willow at all. Another metaphor. Each BtVS episode is pretty much packed with messages, foreshadowing - I'd have to rewatch this one for the subtler stuff. It is harder to rewatch with otherwise not very entertaining episodes. But the entertainment level or plot-forwarding importance is not always directly related to the "significance" level of an episode when it comes to the foreshadowing, etc.

Diane quoted and said, ": ... but try coming up with clothes that you would personally find attractive on him.: What WOULDN'T be attractive on him? : Okay, okay, *then* you get to imagine either a) you ripping them off or b) him stripping for you.: Can we have both? ?? In answer: What WOULDN'T be attractive on him? Anything baggy - except maybe fishnetting Can we have both? ?? But of course! I don't think I could have chosen between the two anyway.

"First Date" was the first episode where I actually sat there afterwards jotting down notes to help me cover my main points here.(Had some very tense moments after the episode folks - I thought I had a major taping disaster on my hands. When I tried to rewind it for a second viewing there was something wrong with the tape - it wouldn't rewind or play. Everything from "Showtime" on is on that tape and I was afraid I'd lost it all but I finally got it fast forward to the end and then was able to rewind and play it(heave heavy sigh of relief). So here I go: -Disappointment at not getting to see Spike's reaction to learning that the chip was finally gone and at Buffy's discretion. Having the chip removed and the fact that it was Buffy's decision that freed him of it was a major milestone for Spike and I wanted to be there for it. -Confusion at Spike telling Giles in the cemetery after tackling him that Anya had told them that he was The First. Huh? Spike and Buffy were not present when the call came from Robson that cast (finally) suspicion on Giles' humanity. Anya would not have had the opportunity to speak with Buffy and Spike until after the Scoobies had already returned from the desert where they had found Giles and confirmed he was real. So when and why would Anya have told Buffy and Spike that Giles was The First? That made no sense at all. -Why was Spike no longer chaining himself up when not in Buffy's company. Last week he insisted it was necessary. What changed? -I too was stunned to hear he "...still in love with Spike..." line. Since when had she ever admitted that she ever was? My mind did a mental double take at that line. I wasn't sure my ears hadn't deceived me. I'm knew Buffy was in denial but I'm a bit surprised Willow didn't call her on it. It would have been great if Willow had pounced on her (figuratively speaking) and said something like, 'oh, so your admitting now that you were'. (Nan, please Email me and explain how I should have properly punctuated that preceding sentence.) -When Andrew was talking to The First in the kitchen The First referred to Andrew killing Jonathon with an axe. Wasn't it a sword though? -In the living room discussion about Jonathon's meeting with The First it looked as if Spike was wearing a long sleeved brown shirt, but maybe it was just the lighting. Thoughts? Anyway, when he turns and leaves the house to go tell Buffy that Xander was in danger it looked as though something red, a blotchy red patch, was on the back of his right shoulder and on his right upper arm. It almost looked like a blood stain but it couldn't have been. Could anyone tell what that was? -Buffy left her cell phone home again??? Come on. Dangerous times here. You'd think she'd appreciate the necessity of the gang being constantly accessible by phone. -Spike may have been touchingly accepting of Buffy dating but he seemed eager to interrupt her date on the pretext of alerting her to Xander's danger even before he knew that she wasn't reachable by phone. Looked like he was relieved to have an excuse to go find her and abort the date. - Never saw it coming. In all the speculation I've read about Wood since his introduction in the show it never occurred to me nor anyone else as far as I know that he could be the son of the slayer that Spike killed in '77. Kudos to Joss. - When Wood told Buffy about his mother and his vendetta against vampires it looked to me as if Buffy immediately suspected that Spike was the guilty party. I could see the wheels turning in her head, and was disappointed when she didn't warn Wood that she was the friend and ally of an ensouled vampire who he had better not get any pointy ideas about. And I was later surprised that Buffy failed to warn Spike about Wood as well. -Uh oh moment: learning Wood's history and understanding the significance of his name. Will Wood be the death of our Spike? As someone else said, I hope that's just too obvious for Joss to let happen. - I'd forgotten about the no reflection thing. When Wood was looking in his rearview mirror I actually thought he was seeing Spike. Guess that's why Spike was sitting directly behind Wood, so he wouldn't be in Wood's field of vision? - Noticed Buffy was quick to explain Spike to Wood as a colleague rather than her friend and ex. And he does have ex status, remember in "Beneath You" Xander introduces him to what's her name as Buffy's ex. - Xander's fortitude and courage were impressive and gratifying but I was just a little skeptical that not even a single groan escaped him when he was stabbed. I know it wasn't as bad as having his chest carved up like a jack-o-lantern but still, it must have hurt plenty. But I was proud of Xander. That said I couldn't help thinking that Ashanti's role was just a blatant attempt at exploiting sweeps. After all, she was woking entirely independently. You'd think that even if she decided to join in on the side of The First that she'd have been in the company of at least a few Bringers while performing such an important ritual. - Seemed as if Spike was off his game during the fight with Ashanti. He didn't make a very good showing. Maybe his ribs have still not healed yet. - The look and touch between Spike and Buffy after Buffy beheaded the Ashanti demon seemed somewhat contrived. Last week when the two of them were alone together in the basement sitting on his cot and he was in chip induced agony she never once reached out and touched him (remember I remarked on it at the time). But suddenly now in front of everyone she rushes first to his side and holds his hand even before checking on Xander who had been stabbed and bled? It didn't ring quite true for me. Don't get me wrong - I'm not complaining about that she touched him only about the context and timing. - Xander really needs to pour a foundation in the basement and cover that damn portal with concrete. - Why would Spike think that leaving town would make him less of a danger to his friends and allies? The First can get to him anywhere and it seems to me that removing himself from Buffy's sight and supervision increases rather than diminishes his vulnerability to The First as well as Buffy's ability to detect or sense a change in his behavior that might clue her into the trigger having been activated. Remember the first time she brought him home at the end of "Never Leave Me" when she told the Scoobies that she wasn't going to let him out of her sight? Surely if there's any chance that Spike is still subject to TF's control then it's safer for him to either be restrained or in Buffy's company. Buffy should have made these points to him. - Why would Spike (or Buffy) think that just because Wood had joined the fight that he was no longer needed? Buffy needs all the help she can get. They can't afford Spike as a fighting allie (who happens to fight along side Buffy more effectively than anyone) just because they have a new fighter as well! How come Buffy didn't make that point? I agree with Spring; the reason she did give Spike was ominous sounding to me. "I'm not ready to have you not be here yet" could definitely be construed as if her ultimate goal which she is not yet prepared for is for him to no longer be a presence in her life. I did not like the sound of that. She is still in major denial (I Hope). Sorry for the long ramble. I'm anxious to read the ScoopMe review which I see was posted while I was writing this and to continue reading everyone elses impressions. Oh, and I probably should try and get at least a little actual work done today. Miss P', great to have you back with us today. deborah

I am assuming you are not Miss Pamela. If you are a new poster to this group, welcome. Please let us know if you are a second Pam. We appreciate your de-lurking and contributing to our board. Again, welcome!

Alexandra - Pam H has posted before. She's the one that told me that menopause was not going to help take my mind off men in general (or one man in particular).

See! I told you that similar names would get us in trouble! Sorry to both Miss Pamela and Pam H. for any confusion we are suffering. We like to give credit where credit is due, but I'm afraid we may have mixed the two of you up a few times. So I hereby promiss to try and keep the two of you straight. P.S. I am also suffering from Lee confusion. There is Lee Hollins, legal Counsel and Lee Parish who has been somewhat conspicuous by her abscence of late. If Lee P. is out there, your absence has not gone unnoticed (since part 5 is it?)

Deborah, good note taking! Yes, Spike is indeed dressed in brown (Not a particularly good colour on him.) and when he turns to leave we see a tear in the right shoulder over his shoulder blade and what appears to be a wound beneath. Where did this come from? Is this a remenant from the fight with the nasties in the Initiative? Or did he injure himself tackling Giles? What's the what? If either of these is true, Spike has been walking around for at least 12 hours with a ripped shirt and an unbound wound beneath it. Or are we simply talking about a bloodstain (I did think I saw a rip)? If so, Spike needs a bigger wardrobe so that he can change into some clean clothes once in a while. Giles should have picked him up a few things while shopping with the newest slayerette. So what do you all think? Why isn't someone caring for Spike's wounds? (Has he been hiding it under his leather jacket all day?)

Watergal, good points. But what leather jacket? That short black jacked he's been wearing all season looks cloth to me. As a matter of fact during "Never Leave Me" when Buffy describes Spike as having a leather jacket to that bouncer at the club I thought that was odd.

You may be right about the material, but as Spike is in semi-perpetual gloom this season (at least while fully clothed) it is difficult to tell. The material certainly seems stiff enough to be leather though. Could be denim of some sort I suppose. Anyone have a clearer picture than my TV provides?

I am sorry to have gone brain dead re Pam H in previous posts. How far back was your previous post, Pam H? I need to know how badly my memory is sliding into nothingness. When I saw "Pam H", at least I figured out it was a separate Pam. That's worth something, right? Waving at Pam H with apologies. Alexandra K.

I was under the impression that the 'thing' on the back of Spike's long-sleeved t-shirt was some sort of logo or design. It seemed sort of red or reddish orange with another color also in the design. It didn't look like a tear in the shirt to me. Whoever has the 'zoom' feature on their VCR should make a full report on this phenomenon. It may be Spike's initial foray into clothes with sayings on them, like Willow's 'Bunny's Dog Walking Service'.

Okay, nitpick time. I went back to do some research and a question arose. How did Spike know where Xander was being held? He claims that Willow did a locator spell, but since he left immediately after they realised that Buffy didn't have her cell phone, how could he know this? Did he suddenly get a Scooby-phone too? Or does he know by some other means? Checked out the shoulder a couple five times, but since Spike passes into shadow as he turns his back, it is hard to see. The marking on his right shoulder certainly seems stiff, like dried blood, but it would also be one of those annoying iron on t-shirt logos that melt when you put them in the dryer. So, if it is a logo, why put it on the right shoulder? This seems like an odd place to put a logo. So here is my question. Which shoulder is Angel's tatoo on? Is this logo some sort of nod to Angel and his soul. (Although he is currently lacking his.) Please, help me out here. I think I'll wander over to the episode board for the first time in weeks.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Angel's tattoo is indeed in the same spot as Spikes bloody spot. Although the bloody spot on Spike is up higher than Angel's tattoo. When we first see the tatttoo in season 1, the tattoo was more towards the middle of his back. Now the it seems to be further up by the shoulder blade.

I have a big screen tv so I could see the red splotch on Spikes shoulder (and another on the arm of the shirt) is a logo that's mostly red. Spike is really doing his d**mndest to not put his feelings out there. He's not fine, he'll never be fine about Buffy not loving him. But he feels he has no choice. After the AR he's afraid any movement in that direction will be misinterpreted. Plus, it's almost easier to try to appear neutral, than be re-buffed (hmmm?). He's not confused about his feelings, but he feels unworthy and potentially dangerous for the woman he loves. That said, Spike needs his spirit back.I'm tired of all-solemn Spike. Some repartee at least with Dawn or Anya, or a heart to heart with Willow would be nice. Instead he's "Mr. Stand and Wait". Yes, he's afraid he'll hurt somebody. Yes, he doesn't want to give Buffy the wrong signals by trivializing his repentance, or having expectations, but being good doesn't mean you lose your personality. I think it would be great for him to start telling the Sits some of his stories (which would be like Gile's flash cards with words). I'm also suprised we didn't find out Spike speaks Cantonese. After all he was in China, and the way things are going, proably killed the new sit's GG. Grandmother.

I agree. Just wrote to tell you that, and that I chuckled a few times through your post. (Giles's flash cards with words indeed!) *chuckle*
