Thank you Ellie. Our recent Email exchange has been mutually enjoyable and illuminating for me. But you articulate and express your ideas much better than I.
BTW, I stopped off at the post office this morning and your Winding Roads tape should be back with you safe and sound by mid-week.
Thanks again.

That makes so much sense. I was watching an ep the other night, don't remember which one, on FX that didn't portray Spike in a very good light. If I remember correctly, David Fury's name was all over it.
That must be terribly hard on an actor. JM is just brilliant to be able to take those personal attitudes and turn them to his advantage.

Rusty said, "Actually, Spike would be a hysterical golfer. "
I think Spike would have a lot of trouble golfing at night. Maybe if he had a radar device for locating his shots in the dark. Watergal is the one who rigs up special devices, right? This one is actually marketable for daytimers also. Many, many golfers can't find their balls with both hands. (Okay, sorry, couldn't resist.)

I get the impression the writers are as conflicted and argumenttive a bunch as any of the fans.
Some of that has seemingly shown up in the depiction of the characters. It makes their actions as mystifyingly (un)satisfying as real people.
The conundrums presented by the infuriatingly impenetrable actions of Xander (not tellling Buffy the truth about Willow's message in Becoming) or Spike's inefficient harboring of demonic eggs ( As You Were) or being rather cruelly defiant to Wood (about their respective parental love lost woes)are sometimes well served by these strategems.
Does anyone else get the sense that the authors vye for Joss Whedon's valuing their interpretations over another's?

deb: I saw the demon eggs as something Spike never expected Buffy to find out about, so he wasn't worried what she would think about the plan. I did think it might be connected to trying to raise money for Buffy, since he made noises about that. It fits - I can easily believe he would imagine himself rescuing Buffy from the DoubleMeat Palace and hoping she would be grateful to him - seeing it as a chance to be her hero.
Not worrying about the morality of the plan, not thinking past how it might help better cement Buffy to his side, makes sense for this stage in Spike's journey.
Not thinking a plan through is characteristic Spike, so that didn't bother me. I suppose he could come up with some explanation for keeping Buffy from going downstairs for a few days.

I think we've all already heard that rumor. I am mostly disappointed to hear it, but am hoping that I am underestimating the power of Joss to make it right.

I kind of get the disappointment- in terms of a repetitive theme but couldn't JM be set up as a kind of competitor to the FG?
I mean he was always the junior member of the Angel/Darla/Drusilla/Spike quartet so I cannot quite see him taking second billing to Gunn/Wesley/Fred/Cordelia but I COULD see him setting up an alternative service to the dreary ones.
AND with Willow and or other Potentials there could be some effective counter strategies for combatting evil rather than just relying on guidance from the PTB?

Given that Buffy is over (still getting my mind around that), is it heresy (especially HERE) to suggest that I would watch anything for which Joss et al had creative control and in whichJames Marsters had a lead role? In fact, (here is where the heresy comes in), I might like to see James get to try his skills at, gasp, another character. One in which he is allowed to age, and to see if he can make us love somebody else as much as we love Spike. Hey I am a certified Spikeaholic, but sometimes I think it would be better to let him rest in peace than become a shadow of himself shoe-horned into another series. (Not that I don't trust Joss, just saying 6 years as the same character...)

Considering a couple of pictures that have been posted to this board Spike knows exactly where his are located.
Golf: He uses squeeze and twist, glow-in-the-dark green balls.... Why does that sound dirty?

I'd love to be able to just write until it's done. But I usually have to do the chapter in chunks. I fix and fuss with it everytime I open the doc.Even when I get to the end I sit on it for a day, read and revise, then sit on it again, fix it again, and then finally, reluctantly send it off. Then after I've sent it I see 14 things I would have said, described, added or spelled better. Oh, the agony!
But like you, Rob this is the most fun I've had in a long time. I'm learning as I go. I keep bouncing tense, but oh, well.If someone would pay me to do this for a living I would think I'd died and gone to a happy dimension.
I feel really privledged to have found all you people with your amazing wit, talent and mutual support. It's almost as much fun as falling in love.

I'd like to see JM get the chance to do a movie that is actually released to theaters near me.But i also don't want to give up my weekly fix.

Rusty said, "Golf: He uses squeeze and twist, glow-in-the-dark green balls.... Why does that sound dirty?"
Well, it sounds dirty to me too, but then I have a mindset that functions that way (and loving it). And the visual I got - not so sure I liked *that*.
Sue P. was concerned that thinking about JM as another character might be heresy to this board. This is my opinion only, but I frankly don't care how he is portrayed, I want to see JM in any way shape or form. What I would have trouble with, though, is if his character is mean-spirited and nasty, or petty and vulgar, or whiny and ineffectual. I have to have him as either a free-spirited snarky villain who enjoys life, or a hero, or even an everyday joe with issues who is still a positive person.
JM is up to playing all the types I listed and he might like to try a new persona. But I do prefer him as a strong character, for good or evil. I picked meeting JM rather than Spike when we did the survey. I "met" JM first as another character altogether (Andromeda) so I am not much concerned about him becoming someone other than Spike, as long as he still is available on the TV. I really wish I had a copy of "Chance" to watch when I wanted. He was so much more James with the happy personality showing through. I hope they find a distributor soon.
A total sidebar on "Chance" - when I watched the move I was amazed at the refrigerator they had in that supposedly low-rent apartment. It was a double-door, white, very expensive model ($1,200 minimum). I didn't know why they would have such an expensive refrigerator in that set. It didn't go with the apartment at all.
Then I read the two-page article on "Chance" in the April 2003 issue of "Buffy" and found out that Amber Benson used her and her mother's own condo for the movie. Ah, now the refrigerator makes sense.

I don't think I'd be happy with JM as Spike on "Angel" if he was basically sidelined - and the thing is, I don't see how it could be any other way. That show is not like BtVS. There are lots of guys on it, for one thing. Spike is a character who works best with a lot of women around him.
As for glowing green balls, don't they already have that demon, Lorne, on "Angel" to provide that? Or maybe I have misunderstood where folks were going with that . . .
Also, how would those rumored occasional guest shots by SMG work? She goes to visit Angel to work up a boatload of sexual tension, then hops on over to Spike's place for her sweet release? I am trying to have faith in Joss, but it is hard.
Sue, I'm with Alexandra - I definitely don't consider it heresy to be happy with the idea of JM in an entirely different role. I agree it needs to be a strong role of some kind.

I spent a couple of hours today clicking through all 15 parts of SSS. I was looking for a series of posts which went on way back when I was first lurking. Someone was upset about a personal situation and you all were being very comforting, even though the discussion had nothing to do with Buffy. Not knowing you at all I stayed out of that thread. Somewhere in that thread, though, someone mentioned having a child/grandchild with intestinal eosinophilia. Could you email me (spichert@yahoo.com)? I have a related disease in my lungs and just wanted to share notes. Sorry to be so off topic. Sue
