The rambly notes I took while watching . . . (I fiinally caught up with both TW eps this Saturday, and I did watch them in order, just didn't get over here to post right away.
Time!! Where does it all go, eh? )
Flashback thingee. Prostitute taking her soldier client off to the woods. Oh, he's not very nice, is he? Damn! So, was she an alien? No, she got grabbed by an alien or something, yes? And then killed him?
Construction site. They're finding the fall out from that flashback. Found the body of the woman? Did the alien leave her body?
Gwen and Owen being all flirty with each other and Owen being a complete ass to Tosh, at the dig and at the office. All with the "private jokes" and so on.
I know they don't even realize just how mean they're being, really. They're all flush and heady with the thrill of new sex and excitement and all. But still.
Hmmmm. Blondie at bar all knowing about Tosh and TW and all. Plus, using a story to get close to Tosh at first. Tosh, you should be suspicious now.
Supposedly a group of IT folks and so on, following their exploits on the net, etc. Well, it's actually a kind of plausible story. I mean, we saw the ep with the Dr Who internet believers/fan club, so . . .
Ah. Get a few drinks in her and a sympathetic ear and Toch spills her guts. Which just fits in peachy with the theme we're getting all season of the dangers and problems because of how isolated the TW team is. And it brings up all the buried emotions Tosh has. They find weapons all the time, "everything wages war", makes you feel so hopeless. Makes me think of Suzie in the first ep, that all the aliens and alien things that came to Earth were shitty. That there must be wonders and so on out there, why didn't they get to see that.
And there it is, our theme. "There's no one to talk to about this." The rest of the team doesn't feel as she does, etc. (I would suggest that if the team would actually talk to each other, they might find more similarities than they think!)
Necklace that reads thoughts. Eeep! But blondie helps her with the confusion. Hone in on my thoughts. Oooh, want to kiss you! So, is Tosh finally gonna get some? Gives it to Tosh. "After a while, you hear too much. It changes how you see people." Yeah, I can see how hearing every thought in someone's head could do that. Would I really want people to know everything I'm thinking? Um, no!
Tosh is "gonna tell the others". Yeah, 'cuz all of you TW folks do so well with that kind of thing.
"I will." "But you won't." And she says that this is because she "knows the pendant". So, knows that you can be pulled in by it? Or does it actively do something to control you?
Oh, painful. Hearing what Owen and Gwen are thinking about her. And about each other.
See,
this is why I don't want anyone looking in my head! And don't want to look into someone else's head! So many small icky thoughts we have all the time, but we know not to acutally voice all of them.
Oh, even more painful. Hearing Ianto's despair and hurt.
Pulls the necklace off. Yes, you know that this is prying in such a personal way, don't you, Tosh.
"These are the people that are supposed to
like me?"
"They
do like you. People are complicated."
Well, true dat! I still don't really trust this woman, 'cuz I think she hasn't told her full/real motives, but she is saying some sensible things to Tosh.
Oooh, telepathy as a method of seduction. Nice!
Now we see our Tosh, all rumpled and confused. And Mary (is her name Mary?) probes for info about Tosh's feelings for Owen. And tempts her with the pendant again. Tosh does know to question this somewhat. Who are you? Is your real name even Mary? Hmmmm. Philoptetes (sp?)
Listening to the crowd . . . all the normal, banal, lousy little thoughts. And then, "I'm gonna kill them, I won't miss." Here is our other Earshot plot moment. Overhearing a planned kill. Only she does know exactly who it is. And he's apparently going to do it now, based on what he's carrying.
Oh! Tosh saves the day! Good job, wacking him over the head! And she did it after he announced his plans, so there'll be no ackward "why the hell did you do that" moments. Excellent work, Tosh! Quick thinking and quick action as needed!
Heee! The gang teasing Owen, and including Tosh when she comes in. The body isn't a woman, it's a man! "A
young man, a very girly man!" Hee! And it wasn't a gun shot, but "unidentified trauma". ;D "I got that it was a skelaton." Heeee!
So, this was the guy the prostitute/alien killed, yes?
Tosh pumps Jack for info on the name and gives the only slightly lame pub quiz excuse. (But why have to pump him at all, you're computer woman, use google! Um. I digress. . . )
Hmmm. Legen of guy marooned due to political nastiness. So, a clue to our alien? Well, duh! She told Tosh it was who she was, so not a clue so much as a direct telling her what it what, yes?
Meeting up with Mary again and being all snuggly wuggly. See, the pendant can be used for good! Ah, and now that she's paid Tosh with the good use of pendant, here comes the trade off. Probes for info about the artifact from the dig and sows doubts about how well TW treats Tosh. Setting up Tosh to get what Mary wanted all along, I'm betting.
Heh! Give Owen a puzzle and he's hooked. Looking at cults from that time. "They ate eyeballs, they drank blood, they had
sex with animals. But they did not pluck out each other's hearts, because obviously
that would have been weird." ;D
Tosh listening in on Owen and Gwen again. Only now she's not getting info about how they see her, just seeing their own private insecurities and so on. Messy!
Jack's been having a conversation with a big-handed (heeeee!) cop and learning about Tosh's heroism. "You secretly fight crime." Heee! Jack knows something's up, but not what. And she's not hearing any thoughts from him, is she.
"When I'm about to murder someone, I'm really careful to talk to myself about it while in the street." OK, first there's the funny and not-so-funny "when I'm about to murder someone" comment. Also, this really isn't that good of an "aha something is wrong with your story" bit, 'cuz a nutty guy about to go do something horrible might very well have been muttering to himself. That is very different from a soldier/professional killer guy. But I digress!
Tosh has figured out she's not hearing his thoughts, too. And now she tries. Oh, and he
knew she tried!! And she knows that he knows. Oooooh!
Tosh is not doing well with the pendant. "Makes me feel dirty and ashamed." Spying on her friends. Yes, that is a kinda creepy thing to do, Tosh. Mary doing more of the trying to sow discord thing. They "pity" Tosh, they give her low-rent admin things to do. Tosh is all "so what" about the tasks. 'Cuz really, why not? They are a very small, very very secret team. I imagine they all turn their hands to whatever needs doing because they can't just add more staff easily.
"Put the phone down" in very different voice. Ah, now that the manipulation didn't work, time to try giving a bit more info. Show your alien shape. (Actually, very pretty alien. All melty and bendy and tentacley.)
"Who are you?" "Sill the same person you kissed." "I read your thoughts, but I didn't read any of this. What else are you hiding?" Excellent questions, Tosh. You put your finger right on it. She had you read her mind because that was supposed to show you how she was the only one being honest, that she cared and of course you know that her feeling are exactly what she said because you could read them! Only now you know that reading her mind
didn't tell you everything.
Ah. So she really is exactly like the Greek guy. Political strife. Prisoner. Marooned. Pendant was how her people communicate (and thus they learned how to not tell everything through it, how to still have some secrets). The machine they have is her transporter and now that time has passed and she's been forgotten, she can go back. Hmmmm.
Can't let her tell TW because they won't help. They'll "examine, assess and lock me in a cell". I can't help but think she might be right.
"You're a culture of invasion." Of invading or being invaded? Or both, eh?
Owen is still trying to work it all out. Hearts ripped out, all going back thru time. Oh. So that's what Mary does.
I hope she doesn't rip out Tosh's heart!
Mary wants Tosh to smuggle her into TW. Get the device. Oh, yeah, like that's not going to go horribly wrong.
Yep. The others were waiting. Oh, interesting. Put the pendant on Tosh so she hears what they are thinking. Mary thinks this will make Tosh be more on her side. I think she may find that to be a miscalculation. Oh! Holding her hostage. Knife at throat. And Jack sends a message right to her. So, he can be heard if he wants.
Mary and Jack - "You smell different to them." (You know, Mary's movements really remind me of the werewolf woman that Oz slept with . . . ) Heee! Jack and his babble about British guy's teeth. ;D Jack, Jack, Jack. Always with the sexual chatter when you want to distract people.
"What are you."
"I don't know."
A not infrequent answer when you discuss aspects of Jack.
Oh. He reprogrammed it. Sent her to the Sun. Killed her.
Was that necessary? Well, she did kill a whole bunch of people down thru the years. And she didn't rip out Tosh's actual heart (just her emotional heart
), but she did put a knife to her throat.
Perhaps not necessary, but killing is always the path Jack will take when there is a threat. He's both like and unlike the Doctor. Can be just as ruthless, but he goes right for it always. The Doctor always gives the bad guys an opportunity to stop, to leave, etc. Will try to find another place for them to go, etc. When they don't take him up on it and continue their killing, well, then there's no help for them.
Ah. Discussion between Owen and Gwen and Tosh. And they all act true to form. Owen just gets angry and stomps off. Gwen and Tosh each admit their errors. And Gwen also offers comfort and hope. "Don't let this put you off." Tells her that love suited her.
Jack lets Tosh decide about the pendant, and she smashes it. Ah, and now we get to it. Asks why she couldn't read his mind. "I don't know." (Lots of Jack-based IDKs, aren't there?) "I could feel you scrabbling around in there."
"It's like you were dead."
Well, I've been saying I wanted Tosh to "get some", but I didn't want her to get her heart broke.
