I also want to note, for the record, that I didn't hate Aaron Boone before I read the article. Not that I was his biggest fan, of course. But I also know winning or losing a series is about a lot more than a single home run, and it seems beyond ridiculous to hate him for A-Rod going to NY. Especially when Steinbrenner's around. Agreed, on all counts. . .SIGH. No baseball today. For me. I guess I can watch the Oakland game tonight and root for Texas. That'll be a new experience for me - rooting FOR Texas.

Well, the Cardinals are down one run in the eighth as I type but the Royals were amazing today. They scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth to come back against the White Sox 9-7 and take their home opener in front of the biggest opening day crowd in the stadium's history. My husband usually goes but, for the first time ever, was unable to get tickets. Now, if the Royals can just hang on to Beltran...
Oh, and Tony did shave for the Cardinals today. Last week's overseas supposed season opener in Japan doesn't count.

Rach - I just have a general disliking for the BoSox living with a Yankees fan. His hatred rubs off on me. 7-4 Cubbies! weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Wood had a less than convincing opener but Lee did ok batting 6th and Alou pulled through. Just wanted to say it does please me so that all you ladies are into sport. Over here the only sports girls really like are ones like Rugby beacause of the mens legs. Not sure what it is about Baseball that does it for me but I wish it would kick off over here. Like I said i've been a fan for ages and pay for the mlb tv subscription thingy so there is rarely a game I miss. Allways know the scores *geek alert* Is Baseball the biggest sport over your side of the globe then? Because lots of people say that NASCAR or Golf or American Football is... I refuse to believe that!

I refuse to believe that! Hon, you don't have to warn us when you're gonna be a geek. Have you looked around? I'm fairly certain that baseball isn't the biggest (as in most popular) sport in the U.S. - football probably has that advantage. The NASCAR people are just full of it, though. Baseball has suffered a bit because of things like the length and slowness of the game (although I don't find baseball any slower than, say, your average soccer game, if you're counting in terms of the frequency of scoring). . .and also, a couple of player strikes didn't help. But I'd say it's still the game of choice for family outings - 'cause really, it's such a social event. And much more family friendly than other sports. As for women and sport - many women like baseball, and my sister is very enthusiastic about basketball, and then there's my best friend Deana and hockey. So either I'm selecting for women who like sports, or else lots of American women do. Good on your Cubs. . .I was "watching" the ESPN play-by-play while being bored out of my mind waiting for boxes to unpack. Now I'm off to watch the Rangers hopefully maul the A's.

Less than 24 hours into the new season Pedro Martinez was already pulling his prima donna crap--he left Camden Yards Sunday night before the game was finished.
His friends are saying he was just incredibly disappointed at the way he pitched (as Pedro's already not talking to the press, we have yet to hear from the man himself), but even if true that's a lame excuse in my opinion. Your teammates are still out there playing, and you owe them your support. Plus he's been in Boston for several years now--he had to know the press would salivate over something like that, particularly with a first-year manager.
Sigh. Not even a day's grace from the usual melodrama this season...

And the A's pulled it out last night, although their Opening Day starter looked, well, crappy. Unfortunately, so did Texas's, but that's to be expected. Mariners Opening Day at 2:00! (PDT)

Oh, hey, Sara - my friend Dave just e-mailed and reminded me of a question I'd wanted to ask you - WHAT is the deal with Johnny Damon's Grizzly Adams look?

Oh, hey, Sara - my friend Dave just e-mailed and reminded me of a question I'd wanted to ask you - WHAT is the deal with Johnny Damon's Grizzly Adams look? Damon was a stunt double for Jim Caviezel in "The Passion of the Christ." Yes, I'm kidding. Honestly? No. Frikkin'. Idea. That's how he looked when he showed up for ST, and he got the okay from the Boston PTB to stay with the caveman look going into the season. Part of me wonders if it has anything to do with the concussion he got from colliding with his teammate in the Oakland game--he's said he suffered from serious migraines well into December, so maybe he wasn't feeling steady enough to be wielding a razor near his throat.

So are they not paying him enough to afford, say, a barber?

Gotta love the imperturbable pitcher. Make a couple of errors? Fine. Just means I have to get a couple more guys out.
And Edgar. . .struck out. Sigh.

Julia, 1-1 at the end of the second, and the trainwhistles at Safeco have never sounded so sweet.

Crap. Frickin' Troy Glaus. Greenlighted 3-0. The offspring have hijacked the TV and are watching more DS9; hopeless for me to try to keep track of the game. Julia, sigh
