Part I New shot of the apartment complex? The Doctor's reaction to Jackie kissing him. Hee. That was toooo fun. ;D Him trying to sneak by, and not sure if he really wants to, and her just being all totally Jackie and jumping him. Very neatly done, that whole bit. I liked how we see things through Rose and the Doctor's eyes are all, WTF? But people on Earth have put their own rationalization in place and they don't see how . . . unusual this is anymore. Although, I must admit, if it kept happening, I guess you'd have to get used to it. But I don't think I'd really buy the idea that they were ghosts of people I knew if they never did anything that seemed familiar. Never tried to communicate or be like the person, etc. Ooooh, I totally thought of that too!! Of course, I've always thought those phone ear clip things looked . . . odd. And ever since the Cybermen ear bud ep, when I see someone wearing one of those I've had a little giggle in my head and been tempted to warn them! ;D Wanting to believe, eh? I liked that he told her how there really was no scent of cigarettes, how the her desire for this to be someone, someone she loved, was the key - but he didn't do it realy mean or harsh. Just telling her.

Part II Hee! The Doctor really has the backpack and everything. This group is creating the ghosts. I really liked the phrase the Doctor used, about a footprint not being a boot. Fits more than just the "ghosts". Interesting, that. Because I don't agree with Jackie that she was becoming less human. Heck, the whole curiosity thing, wanting to explore, do things, etc. is what attracts the Doctor to humanity. So, really, wanting to keep exploring is very human. Plus, another big part is that she loves him and wants to be with him, which is also quintessentially human. And love and emoption is also a part of what attracts the Doctor to humans (and that perhaps he envies a bit?). Jackie seemed like she was being also very human, and being very much like a parent. What she didn't like was that Rose was going off on her own - making her own life, away. And yes, it's dangerous and may mean she might not see her again and of course Jackie doesn't want that. (Heck, Rose doesn't want to never see her again.) Huh. So, I guess traveling with the Doctor could be a metaphor for growing up. Kinda. 'Cuz the Doctor is a lot like a big kid sometimes. ;D I loved the whole clapping scene. ;D And it was interesting how he is a celebrity they were all excited to see and yet also a prisoner. That was too funny! Talking about how she'd aged herself and Jackie being all "oi! I'm not that old".

Part III Yep, this is Torchwood. If its alien; its our. British Empire again. This whole thing is super troubling. Really rather troubling. And then ironic that part of the reason the Cybermen are foiled is that same excessive devotion to duty. ;D Heeee! Much cuteness with the woman in charge. All devoted and bouncy and "gosh darn it, we're doing this for the empire!" Actually using phrases like "the alien hoard". Nice mixture of funny and sorta creepifying. Lines like "if it's alien, it's ours" as they take the TARDIS away. And saying that the alien technology they have is for them, not the general public. Such classic Doctor moments too. Like when he goes out of the TARDIS to talk to the soldiers and Rose is all "they have guns!" and he says something like "And I have nothing. Which makes me the better person. So they can shoot me but I have the moral high ground." ;D Heeee! I loved those. So fun and geeky to have him wearing them all the time and then nice that they had more purpose that just being fun. Once the Doctor told us it was void ship that had been lurking for potentially infiinite time in the nothingness, well. I had a pretty good suspicion what was inside. And I turned out to be right. And yet, oddly, the connection with the parallel world didn't occur to me. Even with the Cybermen being there and all. **nods** And there's our connection to the Time War and all.

Part IV Rose impersonating a scientist. Clever. Lots of opportunities for Rose to show how well she can use the Doctor's technology and how capable she is. Always a warning sign for any companion is when they have an ep of being very heroic and capable. **laughs and nods** I was so happy to see Mickey! It's rare we get a chance to see a departed companion and know they're OK. And heck, he's not just OK, he's totally kicking Cyberman butt! ;D Huh. We saw SJ this season too. So I guess all these little moments of past companions are helping with that theme this season - companions and the Doctor's relationship with them and his aloneness and so on. ;D And so of course the Doctor will have to step in . . .

And ever since the Cybermen ear bud ep, when I see someone wearing one of those I've had a little giggle in my head and been tempted to warn them! ;D Hee! I've always wanted one of those too, provided that they really fit well into your ear without hurting, of which I am very skeptical.

'Cuz the Doctor is a lot like a big kid sometimes. ;D Jackie's comment about Rose made think about Ender's constant traveling in Speaker for the Dead and Andrew's efforts to be human in Becentennial Man. The question of what makes one human is one of the fundamental questions that Sci Fi addresses. I think what Jackie is saying is that if Rose keeps traveling with the Doctor, eventually, she'll be "In the world, but not of it" and that this tie to earth and other people is essential to being human. Actually, you see Buffy have this same issue as well. What you bring up about curiousity being a human trait makes me think about the paradox of astronaut selection: the ideal astronaut is some one who has strong ties to the world, but is willing to give all that up and leave earth.
