science lab (since they use it so much, the same lab as got broke in to by Darla)
Big mirror shown off nicely.
and the science teacher, not dead yet.
Xander cant make himself do the dissecting.
they all suck at undercover. They are so obviously being sneaky.
spooky gargoyle gate of doom.
er, in case you havent noticed, I'm mocking how much they lean on the spooky place cliches in early eps. I mean it works cause they take the cliches and twist them, but blah.
I love the smash the clock moment. Kind of a wish fulfilment moment, you know?
grey shirt with a grinning something, cat? Witchy black cat.
and another appliance, squeezy juicer. Theres a whole lot of gizmos around.
Buffy with the hair fountain again, all school colors today.
'macho man', funny. Cause thats exactly what she isnt and most hero types are.
"Y'know, there are just some things about being a Vampire Slayer that the older generation..."
not just that mom, that the older generation. Presumably, doesnt understand. Giles issues?
Drunk cheering Buffy is funny.
Everyone else has the same shoes. So even in uniform Buffy manages to not match.
"Totally and completely one of the girls."
Which is another problem Xander has later. Lack of guys.
And again, establish relationships, though obviously they do change. But thats why is so blunt now, so we know and can do stuff with it.
Giles now. Stripy shirt again. Yet another tie. Sort of shiny brown with white dots. Havent seen the same one twice yet. Still with the ring on his little finger. Wooly layer today lacks buttons and is more red. Jumper. Or sweater, which given the climate seems more appropriate.
Science lab for spells. One of the things that trips up Willow later is she seems to see no difference between science and magic. That impression starts forming here. Same tools, same surroundings.
Shiny outside places to contrast with spooky scary places.
Really ghastly car, making little rattly noises. First appearance of the Gilesmobile? It, um, suits the stammering tweedy guy.
Giles being all careful of Buffy, leading her to somewhere to sit down, and getting all grrr at the lady. No stammering here. Ripper isnt far hidden really.
Buffy looks all grey already.
Giles in the back all folded in. Glasses off then on. He doesnt just stay still. Like, ever.
(also, Giles red jumper, Giles get passionate angry. It always surprises me but this stuff really does seem to track a lot. Like Buffy's mom was wearing red when there was the really unsuccessful angry talk.)
Amy-mom is sitting in front of a cage while explaining what her mom did to her. Big twirly bird cage. See, trapped lady.
Its detail like this that makes the transcript feel so thin. The words are very far from the whole story.
Scary black cat of doom! Scary pussy = bad witch. um, no comment.
Giles carrying Buffy. Lookit, caring, support, all the good stuff. And nothing dodgy with the bare legs and all, cause she's so ill.
No, seriously, Giles being caring.
Taking the jacket off. Remove a layer, less getting in the way. And the red thing being very red, and more matching to buffy. Also its a sleeveless thing. Not so sweaty then. And also, cardigans are about as uncool and old man as you can get, so this is a huge improvement.
Actually I think this outfit is pretty much the one default Giles in my head wears.
"I'm going to stop this. Promise."
I'm just thinking, given what we know later, Giles' history with magic, that there would be a whole lot going on underneath. This would be a huge and scary thing. Magic leads to badness and getting eat from the inside out. So that Giles is willing to do this, very big deal.
His incantations are a little awkward. I mean compare Ethan with the rolling intonation. This is just a bit forced.
Xander doesnt sneak very well, but he does Vader choking really well.
"Take of mine energy and be sated."
Two things. Good guys offer themselves. And Giles is willing to sacrifice himself for Buffy.
This is huge and needs establishing right away. If he is all bossing her around and wasnt willing to do this for her, the power dynamic would be nasty and unbalanced. Wesley and the council, using without giving. But Giles isnt like that. And its because of the magic that we know this. Because he can do magic. Because he is willing to give of himself.
I mean he cant know how much the bad things will take, right? He might even end up swapping places with Buffy. And it obviously hurts. I mean he is making hurt face, and we've seen him get all tortured without making hurt face. So this is a big deal moment.
"Release!"
woosh, big special effect there
Giles knocked down. Again. Two in a row. Knocked out already? Yup. Briefly. Eesh, how many head injuries?
"It was my first casting."
!
yes I know it was retcon, but without ooc reasons all we know is Giles lied. He told a flat out lie. To cover up his involvement in magic.
He has his sleeves rolled up. And he keeps his arms close in to his body and turned so you couldnt see his tattoo. Yes, again, I know he doesnt have one yet BUT in canon he would have, and it looks like he is deliberately hiding it. Oooh, goody, juicy... um I was going to write 'bits of Giles' but that looks very, very wrong. I mean little details that a fic writer can use to build a Giles with, and they actually fit and are consistent even tho retcon.
also he's all "I may have got it wrong."
his uncertainty about doing magic at all, showing itself. see, all fits.
Buffy & Mom reconciliation. And they're wearing part the same colors.
Gah! Buffy dress! yeesh!
Catherine the Great, trapped in her golden moment forever. You know I still love that ending. Creepy cool.
3 hours, 3670 words. A lot of it sort of bibbling but a couple of interesting points. I hope.
