I agree this epiisode is one of my favorites of season 1. NB really shines in this episode. For someone who has not acted before this season this, for me was on the scale of DB's scene in I only have eyes for you. He went from being such a sweet guy, to being possessed and acting like a total ass. It really was a nice transformation and showed some of his acting range to come in future years. Also, I really notice (each time I re-watch The Pack) how strong and imposing NB can be. He plays goofy, picked on Xander so well that we forget he's actually a big, strong guy. Taller/bigger than the other members of the pack, for example. And really, Xander is completely capable of standing up for himself or helping that other kid the gang was picking on. He just doesn't believe it of himself that often. Which is a great subtle way of showing the damage done by years of verbal put-downs from parents and so forth.

Welcome to week 9 of the 2007 Sizzlin’ Episode Festival.
The second most requested Buffy episode for 2007 is . . .
The Pack
It was like the Heimlich, with stripes!
Well, every school has 'em. So, you start a new school, you get your desks, some blackboards and some mean kids
Why couldn't Xander be possessed by a puppy or, or some ducks?
Now do you wanna hurt me? Come on, Slayer. I like it when you're scared. The more I scare you, (sniffs her) the better you smell.
Doctor? Uh... Zookeeper? Oh! Oh, of course, the, uh, Masai ceremonial garb. Yes... Very good. Are you, uh, otherwise prepared for the trans-possession?
It shouldn't be too hard to find a new principal. Unless they ask what happened to the last one. [/size] Don’t remember all the fine details of the ep? Watch your DVDs or videos or take the “read more about it” route!

Oh, how I LOVE The Pack!!
I think Joss may have still been figuring out, at that point, whether Xander or Willow was going to be the character whose insecurities and traumas eventually lead to temporarily going over to the darkside.
This episode is the first we see of a "darkside" to Xander- though we see it again in Doppleganger.
Xander's transformation was very foreshadowy for Angel's eventual transformation, and the effect of the "hyena-spirit" was very much like the effect we see when a person gets vamped. Xander was still Xander, in many ways. Just as Angel will continue to be obsessed with Buffy even after he loses his soul, Xander's infatuation with Buffy survives his transformation as well.
Another thing that strikes me about this episode is the attempted rape scene - if you compare it to the Seeing Red scene, you'll notice obvious (and IMO, deliberate) similarities in some of the dialogue and circumstances - but there are obvious differences too, differences that result in the biggest difference of all: the difference in Buffy's reaction.
I adore NB in this episode. It is one of my favorites.

Eetah to what Spring said. I don't rank it very high, but it's definitely the best episode of season 1.
I think I already wrote most of my thoughts in my review that I linked.
