next day at school.
Buffy in black leather jacket, arms crossed, practically hugging herself.
not the borrowed from Angel jacket, it fits different and the lapels are bigger.
something white with a little bow and some blue picture. actually it looks like a snowman. which is strange.
Willow in many stripes of blue.
Xander in green shirt over white t and blue jeans. dangly round probable st christophers (traveller). and for about the second time ever, presence of skateboard.
Giles jacket, little dark jumper, green check stripe shirt, matching browny green tie.
they sit down outside school to have this conversation. surrounded by people. not so clever from the secrecy point of view. But still, not Buffy's usual place. And also mixed in with the regular world, with people who have no clue what is going on with her and actually dont care. something like perspective. And how this is a very normal thing, boyfriend not who he seems to be, but also very very not normal, boyfriend a vampire. Plus they are sitting in the daylight, though not in shiny sunlight.
if Buffy had a moment of thinking that Angel had been human and then turned, she has gotten over it by the time she gets to school. No ambiguity, Angel has been acting good and is now a vampire, so she tries to find out if vampires are good.
Giles and Xander are all dogma about what vamps are, what the Slayer does to them. But while Xander seems fairly cheerful about it and seems to be pushing Buffy, Giles seems quite apologetic. When Xander is grins about "I think it's obvious what you have to do." he looks up to Giles the authority figure for support. Giles is the only one still standing at this point, so lots of up to look. But he doesnt talk down from there, he crouches down and starts the sentence with 'uh'. Not handing down orders, trying to explain.
Buffy has hurt face all shell shocked, big sad eyes and mouth hanging open.
the bit where Xander thinks he's given the whole 'vampire' thing away but it turns out C is too in her own problems to even hear. (Earshot).
the thing where Cordelia's one of a kind dress turns out not to be. which is obviously an end of the world thing. layers of mistaken id all over.
going from outside sunlight to dark concrete and metal with creaky noises.
Angel comes home through the door marked 'Danger', 'high voltage', and another warning sign I cant make out. Doesnt go up any stairs, first door on the left.
Interesting lighting in his apartment. Also interesting lack of corner I think. It looks kind of rounded.
On the far side of the door theres a screen, heavy horizontal and vertical lines, not quite a cage pattern, but lots of light and dark mixed. Light from below, and blue. past that a bookcase apparently made from metal bars. With a globe on top of it. lots of globes around this season. A picture leant up against the wall, not much visible yet.
On the near side of the door is another light, yellower, with also horizontal dark bits I think from wiggly glass. distortions. Also the blue and yellow light is the same colors as in the Master's place. but theres a lot of blue lit sewers and stuff so its also just really dramatic.
on top of the light is another picture, leant against the wall. He never seems to hang his pictures. it makes things look kind of temporary and just moved in however long we know he has been in a place.
nearest to the camera, lots of books, stacked so they again make a bunch of horizontal layers.
theres an odd shaped thing near the door, could be a coat rack? With sticky out bits.
He turns on a lamp. black. so very useful for lighting. has two bulbs in and some columns supporting it.
He has lights even with vamp vision, but it is still pretty dark.
theres a lot of bare concrete.
Darla, in the school uniform as usual. once again looking grey and black.
"Last time I saw you it was kimonos." and we get to see last time he saw her later. waaay later.
"And last time I saw you it wasn't high school girls."
so her clothing choice is to please/tempt her ex, however wierd his taste has got lately.
Angel coat is leather now. I think it was the probably velvet one on the way to Buffy's. so his loaned one retrieved? or A has a new leather coat? I'd have to change discs to see how the loaner looked when he was wearing it but I *think* the lapels on this one are different. They look more like the coat Buffy was wearing a minute ago.
you know the trouble with me doing these clothes comments is I'm not actually that good at identifying clothes.
also while reviewing to find the coat I realised how much of the Buffy/Angel thing wasnt Buffy going 'mmmm, Angel' it was Willow telling Buffy that Buffy liked Angel. hmmm.
anyway, Angel in different set of clothes than he wore at Buffy's, different neckline on the t-shirt too. So this isnt the first time he has been home since he jumped out the window.
Darla identifies herself as "A friend". Which is such an oversimplification of whats between them its almost a lie.
The statue Angel has in its own case carefully lit. A standing figure with one hand raised.
I think it is a buddhist sculpture, possibly of the Maitreya Buddha, who is the Buddha yet to come, the Buddha of the future, who will be reborn in a period of decline to renew the doctrine of the founder of Buddhism. After his rebirth, by some accounts, Maitreya will lead all beings still trapped in the cycle of rebirths to nirvana.

But none of the pictures look exactly like the one Angel has, so it could be one of the others. I think its religious art because of the gestures.
But I dont know half as much as I would like to in this area so it could be something else entirely *sigh, frustration*
has another uplighter, huge great metal looking thing with holes in it in groups of three. Looks vaguely like vA all round it, like teeths grr. But not a lot like.
exposed pipe going up the wall behind it.
and another lightbulb in a dark holder next to the bed. No plain make the room bright lights. all covered.
Bed has red covers, red cusion, and white pillow.
metal things like steps for a bedside cabinet. Headboard kind of house shaped.
tall ceiling bricks where it isnt concrete.
rollerblind over sunshiney window.
window is above a big chunky old fashioned radiator.
and oh yeah, the whole 'you're not one of them' conversation
it isn't that it isnt crucially significant, its that its obviously significant, and I have it memorised. so I'm focusing on the details.
like red curtain next to the bed area, could close it off?
or his leather jacket shining slightly red in the light.
and whatever it is he fell agains has a feathery looking pattern on it.
He falls away from the light to get out of it, but he doesnt noticeably burn, and its quite shiny on his jacket without doing him harm. Reflex?
No burning around Darla. No fire.
But she uses threat of fire to hurt.
Angel lets Darla get within arms reach, touch him even. Isnt afraid of physical threat from her? No figuring she has a weapon?
Angel is well lit here for practically the first time in the episode. all shiny with it even.
But not as very lit as Buffy. Even when he is light, she is brighter.
most brightness on Buffy and the book, some on Willow, not so much on Xander. Shadowy Xander now?
One ring left middle finger.
Xander jumping when Giles comes up behind and talks. and, surprise! again.
Giles also shadow not extra bright.
Of course once the camera angle changes only Buffy's hair is in the shiny brightness.
she has just a bit panda eyes.
240 is not long for a vampire, and The Master very old.
According to Joss Whedon's original script, The Master's real name is Heinrich Joseph Nest and he is 600 years old.
that means not long->very old is like three times age.
The poster behind Giles days 'Reader become Leader' (probably with some s on the end)
they are sat in amongst the book shelves for once, and with an EXIT right behind them. which puts them near the windows, so light.
Giles explains the Angel history with lots of ums and ahs, reads it right out of the book, not from memory.
then takes glasses off for 'there's no record but vampires hunt and kill, its what they do' and looks right at Buffy. still ums and stammers tho.
I'm so used to just smoothing over those bits that it surprises me how hesitant his speech frequently is.
with the lighting, the colors, and where they stand, Xander and Giles are one pair seperate from Buffy and Willow, but Buffy also seperate from Willow. Giles and Xander are taller than B&W, standing whenthey sit, but both sit or crouch to join them in the outside conversation. Only Giles sits in the library. Xander is still on his high horse about this. Taking a stand (vampires, not good). Giles seems to be making an effort to be open and try and communicate with Buffy, not hand down orders.
Xander in green is an easy call- jealousy, envy, sick with it.
But Giles is also green, under all that tweedy grey-brown (always feelings and expression only under that council wrapper). Then taking the jacket off in the library and green under dark red, but all muted.
Willow is true-blue friend, Buffy blue-sad, black and blu bruised.
If I'm reading too much into the colors is really easy to do today.
