OK, I guess this is a not so subtexty episode. ;D Not necessarily a fave of mine, but not a total dud either.
Reptile Boy. If that's the title, I guess we should pay attention to the part when Buffy says this. So, when is that moment? Why, when Buffy first starts to take control of the situation instead of letting the events control her. Really, this is a classic, classic Buffy grrrl power ep.
I mean, frat boys drugging girls at a party? Heroes to the rescue of said girl, but before they arrive she gets to kick some frat boy ass and chop a giant demon penis snake in half and save herself? Yup. Gotta go for pretty unsubtexty subtext there.
What's left after you take that away is just a bunch of really cute scenes intended as character development for most of our gang.
The first scene with Willow and Xander and Buffy watching Bollywood TV while braiding hair and talking about how they have no lives is one of my favorites. Love it, love it, love it! Plus, we get to see how tight those 3 are getting.
Cordy gets some nice funny scenes with Buffy that show us her bitchy selfish side, but also do a heck of a lot to reveal how insecure she is. And, her excessive concern about money is a nice foreshadowing to the financial disaster awaiting her next season.
Giles gets some very very funny scenes to be "goofy Watcher" and "beat up by Buffy guy" and "scolding daddy-figure with lectures and hands on hips". Along with a very quick/subtle glimpse of Ripper when they are fighting the frat boys. No dithering or clumsy punches there - just one very effective arm/face smack down that takes out a big, young, strong guy coming at him from behind. Yup, he's letting Ripper out selectively and then very neatly tucking him away again.
Willow gets some nice funny scenes in which she is trying to cover up Buffy's doing’s from Giles. Of course she also gets to show us smart Willow who has the right idea about the dangers Buffy might be facing at the party (and straightforwardly shows us she is shocked by Buffy's behavior), who is really the one who figures out what happened to the girls, who understands Xander completely ("maybe catch an orgy"), who tells Giles and Angel where Buffy is once it's necessary, and who points out the rather important "Hey! Buffy! Snake! Basement! NOW!"
Xander gets the funny goofy boy scenes with the jealousy and the Angel baiting and the humiliating scenes at the frat party when they catch him crashing it. (Love the last scene at the Bronze with him reading the paper. "Buffy." "Angel." "Xander!") But we also see how loyal and protective and strong and smart he is. Figuring out Cordy and Buffy are still there, finding the robe to sneak in, fighting the frat boys, etc.
We see broody and moody and funny jealous Angel (she had a date?!). But we also see no nonsense action Angel (OK, that is the guy to bring to the party) and sensitive caring Angel who knows to show up and offer to drink coffee and who also understands that Buffy is strong and capable on her own.
Gosh. Now that I look at it all laid out like this, I guess it's a pretty good ep after all. ;D

I like Buffy pouting at Giles when he was trying to assert his athority as her watcher.
watching Giles train Buffy in the first 2 seasons. I am really glad they gave him more of a character that has more ability than he shows early on. The Magic, the Ripper part of his past. Looking at this Giles now, he has shown none of that, another example of such wonderful character development from Joss and crew.
