Written by Joss Whedon Directed by Joss Whedon Air date: 5/19/98 While Angel tortures Giles for needed information concerning a ritual, Spike strikes an unlikely alliance with Buffy to keep Angel from destroying the world. I'm just watching this again and being impressed; although I've seen it 10 or more times....
The music was great.
Angel wearing Leather Pants; looking so hot! Those were the days.
Drusilla at her most playful and wicked.
Spike looking inhumanly beautiful. And his body language when, in the car as he speeds away, he pulls the unconscious Drusilla to him with one arm and holds her possessively.
Buffy's ferocious counter-attack on Angel after he thought he had her cornered.
The pain of this episode. The look in Buffy's eyes as, while embracing the returned Angel, she sees Acathla opening the portal and realizes what she has to do. And after she does it, she seems to shut off, shut down and go completely numb, growing old before our eyes.

Lots of rock references - what's that about?Part one -WILLOW: (gives Oz a smile) (to Buffy) Sixth period, after my computer class, we'll rock on chemistry. BUFFY: Ready to rock.
SPIKE: (hears them coming) It's a big rock. I can't wait to tell my friends. They don't have a rock this big. ANGEL: Spike, boy, you never did learn your history Part two:BUFFY: (faces her mom) That I'm, uh... in a band. A-a rock band with Spike here. (shoots Spike a look) SPIKE: Right. She plays the, the triangle.
BUFFY: Xander! XANDER: Cavalry's here. Cavalry's a frightened guy with a rock, (holds up a large rock) but it's here. (Buffy holds up a stake. He tosses the rock aside and takes it from her.) Becoming is a great ep. It's where Buffy has, as Whistler tells her "one more thing to lose." And then she loses it: herself. And then she's coming back from that moment, in search of herself, redefining herself, for the next 5 seasons. And that scene with Spike at the police car . . . what could be better than that?? The dialogue, the acting - so perfect. "I hate you." "And I'm all you've got." They are already sizzlin'. And Joyce! Kristina S is so wonderful in this; There's Joyce: - Finding out about Buffy's Slayer-side, and not coincidentally, meeting Spike at the same time.
- Trying to deal with Spike, and trying to deal with the news she's just received.
- Trying to deal with authorities that talk so condescendingly and judgmentally to her.
- At her wit's end, not knowing what to do when her teenage daughter wants to go out on a life-threatening mission, telling Buffy that if she leaves, she's not to come back.
- Joyce, in tears at the end.
But Buffy doesn't leave because of what Joyce said anyhow - she leaves because of what happens with Angel. And when she's ready to come home, she knows full well that she can. And she does. Good stuff. And Giles being tortured by Angel, and Spike trying to play both sides, not wanting to spend months "getting librarian out of the carpet . . ." I could go on and on. A great ep.

Wow, that's really neat. Not much else to say right now, though I always find that look Buffy gives Spike right before she tells Joyce she's the Slayer. She looks to him for support, but at that point there's no logical reason to do so; she's only reluctantly agreeing to work with him rather than fight him to death. Hmm...

From the minute Spike says "Hello Cutie" it seemed to me that they were locked and destined to end up working together for real. The chemistry between them was perfect. Buffy asking incredulously, you want my help "because your girlfriend is a big ho?" "Happy meals on feet" Hee! The whole scene illustrated so much of the differences between Angelus/Angel and Spike. Spike, Mr. Practical Romantic. Can't be bothered with all the poofy artistry/end of the world crap. Buffy catching the sword and telling Angelus there she has herself. I could be setting myself up for a thrashing here, but I really wanted to see Angel go at that moment, even though he opened his eyes and said, "Buffy?" In view of later episodes and AtS, how come he did not remember everything he did as Angelus? It seemed too facile to me, to explain away his actions with "lack of memory" or something akin to it. Lots to ponder and enjoy. I loved this episode!

I always find that interesting too. Of course, he does remember everything he did. His guilt over what he did to Jenny and Giles is very clear in season 3. From what we see of the flashback of his initial ensoulment, getting your soul back is initially very disorienting and it takes a while to remember everything again. So my take was that Buffy killed him while he was still disoriented. What's tragic about that is that Buffy sees herself as killing InnocentAngel; she sees him as her victim. Because of that moment, it's very easy for her to see "Angel" and "Angelus" as two different people, like a Jeckyll/Hyde thing, when of course it isn't.

I tend to think that it was just disorientation from recently getting his soul back again and that, if Buffy hadn't had to shove a big ol' honkin' sword thru him and pack him off to a hell dimension, he'd have started remembering. But I could just be fanwanking. ;D

Eetah eetah eetah to everything that folks have been saying about the perfect way the Spike and Buffy scenes just click. It's so obvious that there is a chemistry and connection there - no matter how much each of them want to fight it. Heck, even the fact that he pauses while carrying Dru to consider the fact that Angelus is gonna kill her is . . . well, it's not really what a vamp should be thinking about a slayer, is it.

But I could just be fanwanking. ;D Oh - I have always seen it that way. Angel is suddenly repossessed of his soul, and here he is in this weird situation - I've always thought it was temporary disorientation. He surely remembers everything he did while soulless, once he's back on his feet in Season 3. It's not like he's surprised when Giles grabs the crossbow. He doesn't want to think about it, or talk about it, and Angel has compartmentalized himself very thoroughly . . . so I think he . . . keeps it all out of his conscious mind as best he can, as much as he can. But he remembers the things he did before he got his soul the first time (the torture of Dru, of the gypsy girl, etc), so - there's no reason to believe that Angel can't remember his soulless activities once he gets his soul. He most definitely can remember, once he gets over the shock part.

Hi again! I love reading everyone's posts! Consider them all eetahed! May I just say that Becoming Part 2 will forever be in my heart? And surprisingly enough, Spike is *not* the main reason. Or, at least not always. Following is my remembered perspective as a first-time BtVS viewer. (Continued from Becoming Part 1.) Never having seen any BtVS episode before Part 1, I assumed that the Buffyverse was a place where everything would eventually turn out OK for our main characters. Sort of like that big old re-set reality button they seem to have on all those other shows. Willow and Xander wouldn't be seriously injured and Angel and Dru were only going to threaten Giles before he was saved in the nick of time. And the police-thing was just a misunderstanding. I *was* worried that Kendra's death was only some plot point to add to Buffy's emotional fuel and that it would be swept under the rug like, let's face it, so many other deaths in so many other action movies. (A point could be made that it *was*, but I do think her death added to the moral weight against Angel.) And while Angel was responsible for all the badness that happened in Part 1, he hadn't acutally killed any non-flashback person onscreen if sacrifice-guy wasn't totally drained. (At the time, I had never seen Innocence or Passion.) So a few uncomfortable consessions could be made so that restoring his soul would solve everything, right? I am sooooo happy that I was proven *wrong* by Joss and his big brass storytelling stones. (P'raps that's what all of Spring's rocks refer to...) Because there's always consequences. I remember being awed by Joss for actually following through with them here, against all my expectations. By doing so, IMO, he surpassed most of the Hollywood stuff being produced for screens both big and small. Speaking of surpassing expectations: Spike! ;D From his "Hello, Cutie" and Happy Meal speech all the way to his posessive hug of unconscious Dru, he stole the show for me. Every time he was onscreen, I felt surprise and drool down my chin delight. The silent living room scene between Joyce and Spike remains one of my favorite entertainment moments ever. (It's the scene that impressed me the most about Joss's writing -- a perfect all show, *no* tell moment.) And *oh yeah* about the Buffy and Spike chemistry. Since Spike was not totally good or evil, I could never guess what he was going to do next. After he sat so politely with Joyce and then silently agreed to Buffy's terms "if Giles dies, Dru dies," I was all set for him to do some good-guy maneuvers. However, his method of saving Giles was far worse than Angel's torture. And during the climactic battle, he did everything *his* way, from his non-heroic attack of Angel from behind to his "I don't want to hurt you, baby…Doesn't mean I won't" to his "God, he's going to kill her" shrug. Hee! Oh, and I mentioned back in the Becoming Part 1 thread that the pain in B2 was so much worse. Poor Giles. Poor Xander. Poor Ang-- err, actually, Angel's 100yr hell-trip works for me atonement-wise. (I just wish they'd refer to it more often in canon, because if Angel did anything there besides brooding and becoming temporarily beast-y, there'd be so much to explore. For example: the parallel to Connor's sitch. And you'd think 100yrs of post-Buffy torment would leave some sort of bomb crater in his character development. Feels like a wasted opportunity for AtS. Oops. Ummm, /rant.) And of course poor 3 Buffy. Her utter devastation at doing what she had to -- just heartbreaking. And aside from her initial bout of tears, no crying. She swallowed her pain and abandoned everything else. Joss is evil. Damn him. Linda, but when's he gonna get back to episodic TV? I neeeeeed the Jossverse!

I loved the entire scene with Spike/Buffy/Joyce. Spike and Joyce sitting together in the living room while Buffy is on the phone. It is the first of a series of little "conversations" these two have over the years. They played so nicely together. The whole scene. "have we met?" Spike saying "you hit me with an ax one time." "remember, get the hell away from my daughter!" all the while Joyce is taking in the fact that her daughter is a vampire slayer and she is sitting in the living room with a vampire. Spike always liked and respected Joyce, it was such a great relationship.

Drusilla's Mojo on Giles was a fantastic scene, Plus I was rolling at the fact that Dru was "in the moment," and cotinued making out with Giles.
