Now living in the big city, Buffy helps a woman whose boyfriend has mysteriously disappeared, while back in Sunnydale her friends battle the forces of evil on their own.

I loved the opening scene to this episode. Xander, Oz, and Willow still fighting vamps even though Buffy has ran off. Other than that, I never really liked this episode. I understood why she ran away, I just didn't like the storyline.
For me Season 3 started off extremely slow! "Anne" and "Deads man's party" are just average episodes. When Faith shows up it really kicks into another gear.

I just finished watching all of Season 3 in order in June, so these episodes are fresh in my mind.
I didn't like Anne much either the first time or two, but it really resonated this last viewing. I kept seeing so many themes that would play out in future episodes and seasons, especially Buffy's eternal conflicted issues with being the slayer. I also loved the way the scoobies kept on fighting without her...and it really parallels the season 6 opener when they again keep up the good fight with Buffy in her grave.

This episode is kind of middling for me. Mostly, I think the demons are lame (and I don't like that one actor, you know the one who's in everything), like they usually are, but I like the rest. There's great thematic stuff about losing and finding one's identity, there's Chanterelle/Lily/Anne, creepy dream sequence, some good humor.
Also, there's some really great editing in the episode. There's the cut from Xander talking about Buffy's probably "having to time of her life" to Buffy standing on the beach that turns out not to be what it seems to be. The cut from the school bustling with activity to Buffy sitting silently alone in her apartment. And the really long complex tracking shot in the school.
Oh, and I like Buffy's braids.

I thought it would have been an excellent time for Joss to have Buffy go back to her pre sunnydale days, maybe have her go back to the old High School, re-visit old haunts and such. He had an opportunity here to show us some of the past of Buffy considering she was from LA. It would have been cool to see
