Well, there will be no new stories until Christmas Day, so how about a look at the classic series to fill the gap? We could look at a classic series episode or story, one from each Doctor. Classic series episodes are available on the US iTunes (though not for free), but there is some good stuff on *ahem*tube. DT is a massive fanboy, of course, and the Tenth Doctor is the same man as all those that preceded him. Knowing about them helps us to understand his character, now.
Anyway, why not start at the very beginning (a very good place to start) with “An Unearthly Child”, the very first episode from 1963? If you’d like to see the First Doctor, and see how the Doctor and the TARDIS were first introduced to an unsuspecting and rather conservative public, IM me for links.
In the classic series, stories were usually four 25 minute episodes long, and this is the start of a multipart story, but is in fact a self-contained plot. The subsequent tale is a rather uninspiring yarn about the quest for fire in the stone age, and so it was largely this first episode that made the series a success and led to the making of the second story, “The Daleks...”
When we first meet the Doctor he is close to the end of his first incarnation (probably several hundred years old – the First Doctor is the only one to "die" of old age) and not the most pleasant individual. Something has caused him to leave his people and to be split off from them, and he is clearly cautious and suspicious. Whatever it was that separated him from his people has had a bad psychological effect and it will be humans who put him back on track. Sound familiar? It isn’t until the end of the Second Doctor’s tenure that we find out about the Time Lords and his renegade status. At this stage, then, all is total mystery.
So, twenty five minutes of vintage DW. I rather like this ep. It sometimes feels like a creepy and low-key Twilight Zone, to me. It would be good to take some advice from Yoda and “unlearn what you have learnt.” Imagine what this story was like for an audience when the whole thing was new and strange. Going into the TARDIS for the first time must have really messed with people’s heads!
Anyway, it's somthing to chat about!
