Mostly this was made of beginning, but when it kicked off it was fun. The Master is back... and back... and back... I still don't trust RTD's endings and I wish he'd have his Dramatic Voiceover tool taken away and I really, really wish he hadn't gone for the 'insanity' bit but there was some fun Master in there, and some interesting character moments.

Well, I'm not going to argue against multiple Simms...
And did he go for insanity? I thought it was a bit of a question, especially when he made the Doctor see into his head.

So, he's not insane, right? The ticking was placed there - and all the players are in place for the Time Lords return. So very cool. Timothy Dalton....007. Very nice. I need to rent/buy last season, which I missed.

Not sure what the hey is going on, but I enjoyed it. Except for the headshaking transformation. That always gets me. *shiver*

That always gets me. *shiver* OMG, all the Simms? All the outfits!! **leers at the pink dress, among others** All the maniacal laughter?! So hysterical. Other bits that I thought were important / interesting / funny / cool / etc.: * "It's real" - the Doctor hearing what the Master has been hearing * The wonderfully epic Heathcliff! Cathy! Doctor! Master! race toward each other and dramatic meet-up * First visit to the TARDIS - "I thought it'd be cleaner". * The Master in a straight-jacket and collar? Come to momma, you sexy beast! Grrrr! * "I like you! You'd taste great!" * The heal a whole planet template thing made me think of the medical device gone awry in the eps The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances * "Breaking news . . . I'm everyone!" ;D

I'm gonna vote for insanity and not-insanity, all at the same time. 'Cuz he's the Master, and he contains multitudes! Heck, now he is multitudes.

I'll make it short and hope it'll post before it crashes again: the repeatedly using the word insane both in the episode and in the confidential makes me think they were saying The Master is insane. there's three ways the media portrays insanity, all damaging: psycho-killer magic powers secretly true and The Master is going for the triple here. It's stereotype bingo, in an area which effects 1 in 4 people. It's got nothing to do with mental illness and everything to do with RTD not bothering with motives or plans or logic and not knowing subtle if it hits him with a giant cluebat.

the repeatedly using the word insane both in the episode and in the confidential makes me think they were saying The Master is insane. <snipped a lot> I find by now that I enjoy RTD's writing more when I don't actually hear his own opinions of/interpretations of his work. To me, the show presented it in this episode as if his mind had been (possibly permanently, possibly not) shattered by something beyond his control (the sound in his head, which the Doctor finally heard here) but that everybody else on the show felt that he was insane, and likely irrevocably so at that. But as Becca notes, RTD himself also kept using the words insane/insanity/etc as if he really believed the same things the other characters said. I ended his interviews with the suspicion that he felt there was no possible redemption for the Master.

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode. I loved Wilfred and the Doctor meeting up again, and Wilfred's search brigade's antics cracked me up. I loved the way the scene between the Master and the Doctor in the rubble-filled place showed the Master's conflicting impulses and emotions - for example, how he blasted him till he fell, and then abruptly rushed up to catch him as he did so, then just as abruptly let go. And as Lola noted aswell, I loved the "I thought it'd be cleaner" line; it reminded me of Donna on the Ood planet - You've got a wood box, he's got a proper rocket!
