Faith!! Faith and Giles!! Yay!! Also, very fitting, following the last issue, eh?
Slayer Sanctuary. Interesting idea, and a good idea, I agree with Faith. But of course I’ll have to wait and see if it turns out to be evil. Particularly because there’s an old-school Watcher there.
Aaaaaand there we go, right on schedule. Evil! Demon feeding on fears and regrets, eating the children. And the slayers too? And Giles, yes? As Faith said, obvious trap is obvious!
So, Faith is confronted with her first “failure”, as she sees it, which has always been her big fear - failure. Courtney is confronted with her big regret, her mom and dad’s break up (very Buffy-esque, that she blames herself). And Giles is confronted with the death of Jenny Calendar, all that sadness and guilt – not by the demon but by the mean old watcher dude.
And Watcher dude, Giles sooooo hit it right on the head! This is vengence. Classic old watcher-y pitfall to fall into – not respecting the slayer, certainly not caring about her, but thinking of her as a tool to use. And one that you grow to resent over time.
Bring a crossbow? Well, at least you’re being honest about your murder plan, not hiding entirely behind a “let the demon do it” wishy-washyness. Well, except that all you really care about is that your pet demon doesn’t get killed too. Oy!
Nice match of theme with last issue, giving that same “OK to sacrifice a few to save other lives”, but of course that’s not really it. It’s not a few lives, and it’s never your sacrifice, and you really aren’t caring about all those other people, it’s really just you.
The end was perfect! “We’re slayers, and we don’t let people die. Not even crappy ones.” Faith, yeah!!
Slayers should be able to choose whether or not to join the fight, especially now that there are a bunch of them to handle the bad stuff. But, do they really need a sanctuary? Couldn’t they just, like, not do slay stuff? Live normal lives?
