Whedonesque asked on Facebook for favorite Xander lines. I am just copying and pasting the responses. I thought y'all might like the trip down memory lane: 17 people like this. ...and of course I contributed my own: "Can I be blind too?" Love the Xander. I love your addition there, Sue, with the "Can I be blind, too?" One of my faves is Xander to Spike " Doing a little laundry for once wouldn't kill you. Unfortunately."

Xander: I like the quiet. That is my favorite, along with 'can I be blind, too?' Use them all the time. Awesome photos, Rachael! Thanks for sharing. Diane - you and Bob rocked those fancy duds! Glad the snow is melting, Julia. Anne - I have that Kanagawa wave on my Firefox theme. There are t-shirts out there. *hugs* to Erin. Stupid alma mater. They are so blind. to all.

Erin -
If it makes you feel any better (or any less badly, anyway), I was rejected by the University of Washington, where I got my Ph.D., for a Genetics LECTURERSHIP (so, non-tenure-track) the same year as SJSU hired me. With not QUITE a form letter; the guy rejecting me was someone who knew me, so he took a minute to write a personal e-mail.
But, still. They don't always know what's good for them. I think that was an internal hire, actually. Happens all the time - they want someone specific, they tailor the ad for that person, but they have to take applications from the wider world.

Kids came over for dinner. We had a dinner party, sort of. Wonderful feeling having everyone together like that. Gave the granddaughter the cosplay wigs I got at Clockworkcon. Geeky happies ensued. Need to find something for grandson. He's into La Crosse and Tae Kwon Do, neither of which do I know anything about.
Manperson wants to go to Robbie Burns night on Saturday.

yes, posting it online is web publication. It would be indexed by search engines unless you coded it so it wouldn't. Anyone with the link could read it. It's published. And nobody will buy something that has been web published. Emailing it to beta reader people, however, is not publishing. as far as I know. It would be such a convenient way for everyone to read it though - Erin wouldn't have to collect email address and such. I could have only the link to the file on the website, so the file itself (say, a pdf file) would not be searchable by a search engine. And I could put that link on a url that would only be shared here . . Surely, simply storing your file out in "the cloud," for beta readers only to access, is not considered publication . . .? There are places like sharehub.com/ that I think can be used for this purpose also . . . Anyhow, I would love to see your work, Erin. if the public can read it, then it is published that means any kind of website if anyone who stumbled on it could read it even if the chance of stumble was low if you need a password to see it, or it is sent direct to a few friends, it is not public yet. that sharehub place looked okays, in the two seconds I looked at it. private sharing is still okays. the big problem is the definitions are changing fast enough you pretty much have to be really paranoid to make sure you haven't ruled any markets out. nobody wants to buy what they could access for free, is the theory, including editors or print publishers or whoever. the other problem, if you're using a pseud or screen name, is proving that work that has appeared elsewhere before is in fact yours to sell. There's a lot on writer websites and assorted publisher pages about this, and it don't often agree in the details. personally I don't reckon anyone wants to buy my stuff either way, so I stick it on my blog. there's people who do that, edit according to feedback, make a nice pretty epub copy, and sell that. or do the self publish thing.

*perks up*\\But today I have HELP! So I can get things done without trying to be two people at once! YAY!!!
Julia, of course the first thing I need to do is throw myself on the mercies of a new creditor because I wrote down the wrong payment date

I would offer my 2 younger sons up to assist you, but they would probably need more instruction than you would want to provide. (Although the middle son is pretty handy, if slow and deliberate in execution and easily distracted, while the youngest is very fast working, but hard to motivate at the onset. )

So.
How long should I wait for a student to turn up when they're late for my office hours (that is, they promised me they'd be here by 11)?
My office hours go until noon, so, in theory, I could sit and wait. But since I'm teaching only grad students, they rarely just drop in.

That does make me feel better, actually. And, to be fair, it was a bit of a longshot; not quite my area, but interesting. I've gotten two more applications out this week, with 2 more in process. I still feel like I'm doing something wrong, but I suppose that comes with the territory.

Another docket dropped on me with short notice times.
Will I miss this job? Would you miss a root canal?

Ha! Ha, I say, Ha! The asshole neighbor who left his enormous hulking black SUV in front of My House in My Parking Space for more than 24 hours (that's since yesterday morning, folks ) finally left. I heard the motor start up, so I grabbed my keys, put on my birkies and lurked until he pulled out, then I rushed out and reclaimed my rightful parking space. Strictly speaking, it's first-come first-parked around here, but there's a family a couple of doors down the street who have multiple cars and no driveway and a habit of parking in front of our house when I'm out running errands. Sometimes they leave a car there for several days, and don't even get me started on the kid who practices electric guitar with amp in the middle of the night... Anyway, I am Fierce Bad Anne, HellGoddess, Smiteage Я Us, Have Bolty Will Smite, worship and fear me, and I got my parking space back, so there. What? I gotta take my triumphs where I may these days.

Tossing credit for the Xander quote back to Michelle. *takes deep bow* Thank you, ma'am. And sorry Karen, I might be in the minority, and lord knows it wouldn't be the first time, but I never really much cared for the line "I like the quiet." Xander? Is not quiet. Xander? Likes to babble. Xander? Is the king of witty repartee and humorous non sequitur. Whoever wrote that line for Xander liked the line because at that moment Xander was being heroic and badass, but didn't really care if it applied to Xander.
