This is the ep. where Spike and Buffy have sex in the alley behind the DP. Who has sex in an alley? A whore, and a cheap one at that. The implication being that Spike is Buffy's whore. Not literaly, but metaphorically (of course). It goes back to that whole Madonna/Whore complex, and it's there in Buffy's relationship to both Angel and Spike. Buffy and Angel's relationship is perfect, ideal...until they have sex. Angel is sulllied by it. Spike, OTOH, is sex. But ultimately, sex is also his downfall (the attempted rape), and part of his redemption is...no sex. Even in Angel s5 (The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco), Spike can't "diddle his own willie." And when he takes Harmony off for sex in Destiny, she attacks him. So, female sexuality isn't the problem, it's male sexuality.

Hmmm...I'm not sure Joss was saying male sexuality was a problem, though I can see how you might come to that conclusion. This is the way I viewed the scene in DMP: Buffy could only feel when she was with Spike, but at the same time, she was ashamed of herself for wanting him so she chose to keep their affair a dirty little secret. The scene by the dumpster was a symbol for the dirty part of their tryst. It could also be viewed as a metaphor for how Buffy viewed herself: she felt like garbage; she felt used up and done. When she jumped off the tower, she was a vessel substituting for Dawn. When she was ripped out of heaven, the vessel was empty. I am in the majority (I think) in not liking this particular episode very much, but I will say that the scene was pretty effective in translating Buffy's mental atmosphere. As a viewer, I felt dirty just watching this dark, depressing scene, so I could very easily imagine Buffy's feelings at the moment.

Buffy's feelings were reflected in the dirtyness of the tryst, the dumpster, the alley, her general depression at the loser job at the bottom of the organizational chart in a fast food place run by mere pipsqueek teens. But on the otherhand, LadyDi, has a point. I wonder what Joss and company were saying here.... I've heard the devouring DP monster described as a giant penis monster. leftylady

They felt dumped, rejected. Our two dumpees who feel like garbage having sex by a dumpster . . . it fits. Buffy was using sex/her relationship with Spike to "try to feel alive again" (as was Spike, in a different way) and this ep featured Buffy being paralyzed by a "big giant penis." I thought it was all about how both Buffy and Spike have become unhealthily dependent upon the sex - how they are using something in a way that degrades them both . . . and causes a sort of temporary paralysis (inability to move past it, addiction to it . . .). Good golly, I have GOT to get to analyzing S6!

Heh! Go money go. **snickers over Buffy’s outfit** Heeee! I’ve always loved the “DoubleMeat Experience” new employee vid. I’m a sucker for parodies – like the one they do for W&H on Angel season 5! This DMP one is actually, scarily, rather real feeling. Well, except for the “harvesting” holy crap moment, of course. Buffy at least has had previous experience faking enthusiasm for a boss, thinking of previous slayer study session things. What happened to “the last one”. Heh! I tend to have lots of empathy with Xander in this ep, even before he is proved sorta right (and Buffy sort of right too, in a way) that this is just, well, life. Or at least normal for this kinda work, not demonic. But then that’s ‘cuz I’ve worked places where the hiring criteria was “if they fog up a mirror held under the nose then see if they can start work that afternoon” and where we routinely would have new hires just walk off during the 15 minute break in first night orientation, never to be heard from again . . . . Lifers. **shivers** Although, managing and/or owning your own fast food franchise? Can actually make you a nice living, according to my cousin who managed a Dairy Queen for a lot of years. Heh! Somehow I always think he’s saying the dehydrated pickle storage is locked. It’s really easy. There are little pictures on the buttons! Heee! A cocker spaniel could do it. (I admit I would have trouble with the fast ordering family too.) Fun snarky trainer guy should have stayed with her for the first few ones, at least. Heh! “After Willow gave us the 'whoosh' engagement party, I got slack on the planning 'cause I figured she'd help, but, well, now that's all been blown to hell.” I have such a soft spot for OMG-did-she-really-just-say-that-out-loud-Anya. And the wedding stuff is just plain funny. ;D Ooooooooh, pretty Spike! Love that sweater-y thing he’s got on. Also? “Service me”. **giggles like a 12 year old** Ooopsie! Nice guy got et! “It’s a process. They do it to the meat.” Ohhhhh, yeah. Don’t look into the ear, Buffy, don’t do it! Halfrek! Heeee! Hugs n’giggles. “What an embarrassing mistake.” Yeah, almost tearing the groom to be into many pieces would be a faux pas. And now with the alley sex. Which, while it does look a bit stilted and boringly done (on both their parts, I am sooooo disappointed in them – no style points for you) must at least be marginally better than working the grill with ear dude, eh? Ah, duplicitous Amy. All faux sympathy and sly looks and “gosh, isn’t your life gonna suck now” let me help mess up your life again. Heee! The tell-tale finger! The severed finger writes! It’s people!! Oh, Anya. Listen to what you’re saying. (And I say that about Xander too.) You guys should, like, be talking about this stuff to prevent the wedding debacle to come! “Xander, you ate the burger!” “Well, first you say it's cat, then you come in and hand me a burger, blah blah blah, five minutes later 'oh and by the way, it happens to be hot delicious human flesh'!” Crusader Buffy! Fight the fast food man, Buffy! Oh, Dawn. So bittersweet when she sees the truth. Buffy will never be a lawyer or something. But Xander is also right that she saves the whole world and that’s even more important. Heee! Anya and Xander, so amusing in their dysfunction. And now the big penis-snake-monster-old-woman fight. Fight, Buffy! Fight, old-woman-really-a-penis-snake-monster! Fight, confessing Willow who saves the day still not using the gifted magic! Fight! **makes dorky fighty punch punch moves** Ewwww, indeed. Blackmail as a hiring incentive. Heee! And blackmail because the fast food place is selling vegetables? Double heee!

I tried to think of something to say about Doublemeat Palace. ... I got nothing. It's just... blah. Least subtle monster ever.
Spike had interesting. asking what demon Buffy is now. offering to get Buffy money. she ignores him when he's offering nice or useful.
The hats are still a work of art.

The hats are indeed a work of art. I focus on basically everything except the monster.
