DUDE! How much foreshadowing is there in BtVS season 7? I was watching Potential this week (FX's Buffy schedule is sooooo easy now with the whole DVR thing) and loving (as usual) Xander's speech to Dawn at the end.
It really struck me how two things are being foreshadowed here. I mean, first there's the loss of Xander's eye, which I know I've been consciously aware of. "I see more than anybody realizes because nobody's watching me. I saw you last night." Dawn: Maybe that's your power." Xander: What? Dawn: Seeing. Knowing. And there's all the eye imagery (Eye of Beljoxa, heck - Buffy gouging out Gnarl's eye!) all season long that is obvious looking back after the end.
But I think it never really struck me how much the plan to defeat The First - giving the Slayer's power to all the potentials - is hinted at in his speech too. When Xander tells Dawn: "And the minute you found out you weren't, you handed the crown to Amanda without a moment's pause. You gave her your power." I mean, that really describes what Buffy does.
Even Dawn's reply ("The power wasn't mine") kind of mirrors the way that Buffy has sometimes spoken about being the Slayer, not in the way Dawn means it here, but in the way Buffy will talk about the Slayerness coming from outside herself. That she didn't choose it or "deserve" it, etc.
