I love the "foreshadowing" in this episode. And also the references to the past. Buffy jumped through the portal with no hesitation. She dove into the light and was almost filled with the darkness of the heart of the first slayer's demon. This time she fought against that darkness. Dawn was again the key to opening the other dimension. Buffy also trusted her friends to find a way to bring her back - again. She's accepted this and this time she uses their power. It's what she does. It's what they do. It's also what Willow does to Kennedy. She takes power from the stongest one around. Kennedy - since Buffy was gone. Kennedy will be key to Willow's successful magic in the final battle. Willow sucking at Latin and Xander's "This must be the exchange student." when the demon came through the portal had me cracking up. Oh, god, he's so good with the funny. miss Xander and Willow The "exchange student" (predator-looking) demon meets his match in Spike. Spike later goes on to exchange, or sacrifice, himself to save the world. Very nifty. Spike went to get his duster after Buffy chastised him. Dangerous she wants, dangerous she gets. The way he dons that coat - is it any wonder Wood gets a jonesin' for killing him? Because if looks could kill, Spike would've been gone after he off-handedly announced to Wood that he got his coat in "New York". Ah, Spike. Nothing like a good tussle - "good for the soul". Loved the editing of the 3 separate fights going on. Buffy and the shadow men, Willow and the magic, Spike and the demon. Did I mention that I am enjoying rewatching S7?

I can't wait for the DVD release on Season 7. It had its frustrations but also had so many good moments. I loved this ep for the foreshadowing aspects as well - everybody "facing their demon" and winning the fight.

Way late to the party on this, but I really enjoy this analysis. Now that I've found it, I look forward to seeing your thoughts on "Empty Places."

Especially the part where you changed the pronouns to I and Me. Very intriguing and a new way of looking at the speech that I hadn't considered. I also liked what you said about Buffy responding to crises and not being a long range planner. About inbuing the potentials with power, it is obvious to us, but the Scoobies didn't have the vector, ie the axe, with which to accomplish that goal before Buffy took it from Caleb. I always wondered why, if the damn thing was so well hidden, that TFE would work so hard to have it exposed, risking the chance that Buffy would find what was so obviously meant for the Slayer as a huge power boost. Turns out that she did find it and did use it to create an army. Seems like TFE should have left the thing hidden if it really wanted to win.
