Your review was such a good compliment to Nan's. You should partner up more often. It wasn't at all repetetive - entirely different style and perspective. I think this guest review thing is gonna work great.
I liked the part about Spike: "But every time Angel picked up that envelope, I leaned forward waiting for Spike’s appearance." Yes! I felt the same way, and I also like the mention of the way everyone compromised in some way, and the feeling of uncertainity we are left with.
Also: "*Moment of silence for Cordelia………ok, moment over.*" Perfect.

I agree with Spring, totally in complement to Nan. I too was suspicious about the package. They showed it so often that I knew it had to be important. And I loved the whirling arrival. We know Joss has a thing for The Wizard of Oz or at least literature, so Spike arriving in a mini-tornado was homage. He acted as confused as Dorothy did. We know W&H is the Wicked Witch of the West. Is Angel Glinda? And they must follow a path strewn with danger to help the helpless.
I do hope they do more about Cordelia. The lack of much reinforces the idea that the parting was not sweet.

I enjoyed your review very much, Patti. I especially appreciated the way you likened it to "The Freshman" in the sense that "Conviction" also heralds in a new era. That hadn't occurred to me but you are so right. Thanks for writing your review. I hope we'll see more of them.

I like the idea of more than one review per week, only to illustrate the fact that this show can generate wholly different perspectives from intelligent people...which is a sign of quality and depth. Patti's (as I expected) is a slightly more whimsical take on "Conviction," and it works as a nice companion piece to Nan's longer, more detailed analysis. In short, Nan's review is the type I would expect from Willow or Giles, while Patti's is more along the lines of what Xander or Buffy would say. Those who know me understand that this is not a criticism of either; it is, in fact, a celebration of the differences between us. It's why this place can be unutterably cool every once in a while. I completely agree that Gunn was the weakest plot development because it felt so rushed...and more than a little unrealistic. Just so I'm clear on this, a guy who still doesn't fully trust Angel and Wesley is willing to mind-meld with the Senior Freaking Partners?! That makes no sense whatsoever. Having said that, I'm betting that more will be revealed along those lines. What Gunn did is certainly unhealthy and unnatural...I have no doubt some bad things will happen to him. I just have a fundamental problem with his character - as we knew him - being willing to do this in the first place. Overall, I enjoyed this review a lot. Well done, Patti.

I too liked Patti's review and have told her so privately. The breeziness, liveliness, and specificity about her personal response to the ep is exactly what we were hoping for in the guest reviews.
When doing analysis, I seem to tend to revert to ponderous academc. Dunno. Maybe it's something in the water.

I gotta say I agree we did a good job of contrasting styles this week. (My modesty knows bounds...) We write completely differently, but we seemed to agree on major points. I enjoyed it and look forward to the next time, but I'm looking forward even more to reading yours and the next guest reviewer's take instead of mine! But ;D

Thank you Spring, Lori, Deborah, MissBuffy, Rob, Nan, and all the little people who....oh wait...I'm taking this praise thing too seriously!
Really, it is a kick to have people enjoy what you write. I appreciate the kind words and am glad for the serendipity of Nan's thoughtful analysis and my fluff being next to each other. This is a fun concept - I really look forward to what Nan and her next guest reviewer have to say next week! This season is going to be great!

A little intellectualism mixed in with the emotionalism. Or something.

Patti, Patti... I know I already told you but, well, I know you so I'll say it again! I really enjoyed your review. I agree with you on how the episode made me feel but that is why I loved it. The first scene in the alley was my favorite... one because, if I didn't know Joss doesn't watch much TV, I would have thought he was making fun of the new Tarzan (ok, so maybe I still suspect he was). I loved the throwback to the first Angel ep ever (him saving a girl in a dark alley from a vampire) and the sudden flash forward in time that happens when the W&H gang shows up. It felt like Joss was saying... "Did you think we were just going to go back to the Angel of past seasons? Think again." And, Angel's confusion at how to react was a nice segue for us fans. We're right there with him in the "huh?" zone. Oh, I'm sorry... was this the discussion thread about Patti's review? I must have gotten distracted . Finishing up now... I had to add that I'm with Spring in loving the "Moment of silence for Cordelia………ok, moment over." Nice BtVS reference there.

Great job, Patti! You and Nan really amaze me with your insights and great writing. I wish I could express myself as well in print, but I'll settle for being able to appreciate good writing when I see it. I love how Joss sucks us into the story with humor and wit, and also with questions and doubts about the characters. It makes it all the more fun in trying to figure out what the heck he is trying to convey. I love one of the first scenes where Angel was striding into his office all take-charge-like, buttoning his suit coat which seemed to me like he was showing he was in control of himself. And than, bam, there's Eve, and he's taken off-guard, and the first thing he does is unbutton his coat. Letting it all in, so to speak. I don't know why this scene stuck in my head, but it did. Thanks so much for the great review!

Why should it be surprising that Wes would recognize Spike? He was a Watcher, after all. A lot of what he thinks he knows about Spike is probably erroneous, but he'd know enough to guess at his identity. D*mn but I miss Lilah! Eve is but a sickly shadow. Of course, we knew Lilah was evil. Perhaps we're supposed to be questioning how evil Eve is. Just as we're meant to be questioning so much else on AtS this season. Not too keen on Gunn's little procedure, either. It does seem forced. Still, they have all kinds of underlings (minions?) around to "hit things." As for Spike's return, JW said it wouldn't be like Bobby Ewing on Dallas. But they flirt with it by seemingly reversing Spike's disintegration. Also, Spike doesn't seem to realize he's incorporeal. Does he feel solid/real to himself? Even after death, Spike defies easy categorization. It's charming, but also quite frustrating.
