Now that, Julia? Now that story demanded a cigarette, and I don't recall having smoked in the last 5 years. thank YOU darlin', for a little afternoon delight. just between friends. Yeah, it's a sweetie. Funnie as heck, in its own way. Julia, who has just finished a long bit o'spander and will link it in the morning when I might have fingers that work

Found this through the links at Lazuli's site, which should mean it's not been recommended here before: shadowsalcove.kixxster.org/satwilight.htmFull, novel length, complete. Not perfect, as it has two items which impair my enjoyment of Spander fics: Bitchy! Buffy, and redundant A/W slashing. Set about the time of an AU season 5, and with a Big Bad plot that would have fit right in to the series. Julia, attemptingto remember to take meds

Set about the time of an AU season 5, and with a Big Bad plot that would have fit right in to the series. Julia, attemptingto remember to take meds Not bad at all - thanks for the rec! Not done yet, but am enjoying it. You're right about the Bitchy!Buffy annoyance factor, but it's pretty good if I filter that out. (Don’t have a problem with gratuitous A/W, ‘cuz I’m fine with that pairing. ;D ) I was doing a little cleaning up of my in and out boxes and realized that I had never posted part 2 of my recommendations of older fic. Had sent them to Caraleigh, but forgot I was gonna put them here, too. Most folks have probably already read these, but if nothing else it can be a reminder of stuff you might want to re-read. * "He Might Be A Pain in the Ass, But He's My Pain in the Ass" - by C.C. www.geocities.com/edibbea/other/cc1.html * The Deal (followed by the Arrangement, the Situation, etc.) by Esmeralda www.my-immortal-beloved.co.uk/AtoE.html (scroll down to Esmeralda) Very much a guilty pleasure, and it has the requisite Bitchy!Buffy of most season 4 & early season 5 Spander, but I can’t help liking it in a nostalgic, forgiving of errors kind of way. * I’m sure everyone has been to look at Estephia’s fiction, www.estepheia.com/ But I’d like to take the opportunity to particularly point out "Let's Talk About Sex" – Not many people in Spander fic do anything other than get rid of Anya somehow. But I love a good X/S/Anya threesome. ONLY if done well - and this sure is! If you’ve not read this particular one before, I recommend that you scroll down (way down, it’s near the end) and check it out. * "Small Fry" & "Son of Small Fry" by James Walkswithwind and Mad Poetess perian.slashcity.org/gila/xanderspike.html These are just so goofy, I can't help but love them even tho' there's no sex to speak of (it’s also got S/X/Anya – so of course I’m happy). The gang gets shrunk down to kid size and wackiness ensues! Domestic Piranahs is also wonderfully goofy, and loaded with sex, if you were missing it from the Small Fry stories. Sands of Time is long, still not yet done, and a bit of a slow read at times. But interesting, especially if you like H/C fic, which I admit I am a sucker for. Very AU – a complete change up of reality from mid-BtVs season 2 on. * "Sweet Memories" by Kayla www.geocities.com/kaylafic/stories/buffy/memories.html is really, well, sweet. It also has some Buffy bashing, but everything works out in the end. Actually, I like a bunch of Kayla’s short stuff too, like "Press 2" and "Press" and her fairy tale stories - which I find very amusing - although those are rampantly Buffy smashing. * "Key of the Dragon Witch" by Kirasmommy is so funny - I know it's probably not really "well written", and it really goes out on a limb of giving Xander special powers, and how, but once it gets rolling it still cracks me up every time. And that covers a multitude of sins in my book. www.my-immortal-beloved.co.uk/dragonwitch2.html * "You've Bloody Well Got Mail" by Mouse and Birdie I love even tho' it's Spangel (but has nice snarky innuendo between Spike and Xander). Again, I love the funny. s8219.net/BetterBuffyFic/Archive/ae/bridiemouse-youvebloodywellgotmail.txt * If you haven’t ever given Spike/Riley a try – and I gotta admit, it’s not usually my thing - you might wanna give "Anatomy of a Seduction" by Mistress Ace and JainieG a try. It kind of starts out one way and then changes direction, but I still liked it. I never thought I'd like a long, serious Spike/Riley thing, but it hooked me. Also, I think it didn’t really get truly “ended” but just sort of wound down and then they called that “the end”. It’s still labeled a WIP, but obviously it’s never going anywhere else. www.geocities.com/btvsslash/mistressace.html * Sajinn has really slowed down on "Night of Nights" the eternal WIP, so I've been re-reading " Day of Days" – but it’s all good. Total PWP non-guilty pleasure. sajinn.com/buffyficmain.html * And, if you've read Spurglie's "Xander Has Kittens" – you perhaps also know that she is in the middle of a sequel - "Xander's Kitten Has Kittens". Updated irregularly, but definitely being updated. www.geocities.com/spurglie/fanfiction2.html Scroll down to Xander and Spike. * "Steam" and "Touch" by Two Ladies of Quality are not that old, you've probably read them on AAS. But if you’ve missed them, I definitely recommend you check them out. Verrrry nice. Lola. Whew. Well, now I don’t feel so guilty that everyone else has been posting such lovely rec’s lately and I’ve just been a lazy slug taking advantage of their hard work.

For fans of Angel and Queer as Folk: a chilling crossover, told as only Chase can tell it: The Man Who Wasn't There. It's Brian and Wesley - as you always thought they'd be if they'd met. www.echonyc.com/~stax/Buffy/chase/index.htmoh, and if you've never watched QAF? Read the story anyway. It's still chilling.

Some day I'll firgure out how to not have text dissappear while I try to put two links in one post, but since this is today: Cara and I were discussing this Spander fic in the main thread; this is a clean link with no popups and no navigation issues: www.my-immortal-beloved.co.uk/waiting.htmlThe story is well told, not perfect but with some interesting insights into self destructive behavior and abuse issues. However, it has three of my least favorite things: Rich!Spike, pretty much just real-life issues with fantasy scenes layed on without much plottiness, and a mushy kiss at the fadeout. There are several above average fics archived at www.my-immortal-beloved.co.uk/menu2.html although there is also the usual proportion of drek. The only drawback is that fics are searchable only by author or title, which when can remember neither is pretty pointless. Julia, posting to come back with the story link

From Nan, part 201: I notice that the Live Journal "memories" sections are again available, and reading up to date assures me that no S'cubie has yet mentioned it. So if any, like me, have been following WIPs in LJ "memorable" posts sections of their authors, they are again accessible. Now, I guess, time for "second sleep," which puts me in mind of the traditional Hobbit "second breakfast." The reason I crashed so early today was that yesterday I was a wicked person: I read the entire Spander opus(es) of Metaforgirl, who has excellent plot construction and pacing, good surprise, solid characterization, and some abysmally bad word choice and/or spelling at times (uses "lathed" for "laved," unvaryingly and often, but most oopses of this kind are fewer than one a "page" and easily ignored. She spells with her ears, and sometimes her ears mislead her). The sex is intermittent and not the exclusive point of each long tale. Most of her fic is complete and I was led into it by reading her current WIP. Should anyone be interested, the URL of her site is: www.geocities.com/metaforgirl/home.htmlAnyway, I started on one many-multipart tale about 10:00 and when I next noticed, it was just turning 5 in the morning. BAD Nan! BAD Nan! So I must catch up with sleeping tonight or I'll do a bad face/keyboard collision at work tomorrow.

Tabaqui has several new Spander stories up at www.catbones.com/scarecrow-horses/fanfiction.htmlOnly one, "Notice" can I recommend whole-heartedly: she sometimes stretches my understanding of the characters beyond my ability to accept. But the stories are always well written, and usually emotionally involving in a way that too much slash just isn't. Julia, time to start hauling people out of bed

www.drizzle.com/~eliade/subtleties.htmlThis was one of the first pieces of Spander I read, and being sort of lazy and out of it tonight I reread it: WOW. Incredible piece of writing-as-the-thing-itself. If it's been a while for anyone else, might be a good time to reread it; if you haven't read it before, try it. Julia, some things are just worth doing more than once

Has anyone else read the... bizarre and disturbing but strangely compelling very long mostly Email RPG called "Tea and Biscuits". Slash to end all slash, hard NC-17 to say the least, post "The Gift" and the easiest way to describe it is it slashes everyone except Connor, Gunn, and Xander (rare, that) in relationships which would challenge Fred's N-dimensional string theory math. And, of course, it's a WIP, hasn't been updated since April, and one of the authors (Magpie) has announced she no longer writes Buffyverse fics. God save us all. It ate my weekend. www.prettymuses.com/teabiscuits.html Warning: there be time eating dragons Julia, mostly because the Emails use the "quote everything ever said" style which many bureacracies have forbidden as a massive energy sink

Jenny has posted her newest tale-in-parts (my, doesn't that sound filthy!) Intimate Strangers. It's Spangel, S5, and not my favorite among her recent work because of the (to me) unconvincingly juvenile Spike characterization, but it's good reading all the same. The Angel characterization may be just as off, but I'm a poor judge of that. At the least, it's literate. www.squashduck.com/ltd/spikeangelmain.htm
