Herself_NYC has made what I believe is her first excursion into Slash. It's Spander, with Spangle angst, Post NFA, NC-17. It feels a bit jigsaw-puzzlish to me, but is good enough that I'd like to present it to the readers and let them make up their minds. "The Approved Mode of Payback."Julia, may just be my current busy-ness

Reremouse tends to write her own stuff in hidden corners- locked WIP updates and the comments of other people's posts. "Incident at the Bay of the Descending Dragon" grew in comments of Savoy Truffle's posts, and has just now been posted, complete, in her LJ: reremouse.livejournal.com/92249.html?view=1256537It's S/X, NC-17, and the warnings really say it all: Warnings: Spike and Xander have sex. More having of sex than plot. Plot. Lube. Implements. Men being men. Mild kink, exotic settings, responsible adult Xander, sweat. Porcupine.
Go with it; it's a fun trip. Julia, and not one bit of serious angst, thanks be to the antic muse.

Herself NYC is, beyond any shadow of doubt, a Big Name Fan, if anyone is. She made her name in Spuffy, especially in the sterling What She Deserves and the much longer and more problematic Bittersweets series. She has recently moved to writing slash, and today finishes the post Chosen, post NFA S/X story Blue-eyed Boy which for all but the last two of its 21 chapters has been referred to as "The Unnamed Sequal to the Approved Mode of Payback." It is important to remember that title, as the chapters posted in the WIP thread have the proper code to access the chapter if you lack the fonts that Herself uses on her fic journal; she posted as many as three chapters a day, starting about a week ago, and the links for the separate chapters start on page 28 of the third WIP thread. The story is worth a little extra effort, being a nice piece of mutual healing, with good characterizations and a plot which has some unpredictable quirks. It rises to NC-17 in some chapters, but defies the interchangable slash sex scenes which are all too common in fic of that rating. Julia, going back to check that all the old links work ETA: which they don't. However, Herself has efficiently and professionally posted these two fics to her archive at Bugger This. Her page on that archive is not directly linkable, but she's graciously sent me both links: Approved Mode of PaybackBlue-Eyed Boy

Every Sunday morning, Xander takes a lawnmower out to cut the grass on Buffy's grave and Crazydiamondsue takes that small act of love and grief and spins it into a complex and plotful examination of what would drive Xander and Spike together in the summer after "The Gift." Sunday Morning Coming Down has taken a lot of work on Sue's part, keeping the story together through computer crashes and moving house and real ife crises, and finally brought it to a satisfying and convincing climax. The story is NC-17 in patches, but by the end it's not the sex which is the point, at all. Julia, very dandy piece of story building Story is also archived here

So think of a Season Six where Spike and Xander have more in common and let that common fact, which should make it harder for them to like each other end up being the thing that brings them together. The Last Days of Rome, by Reremouse, is a wonderful example of taking a set of circumstances and convincingly developing them so that the least probable ending works out to be the most sensible one. In this story, Buffy is taking comfort from both Spike and Xander, and neither one of them is any more satisfied with the relationship than Spike was in canon. Lovely bit of character development and all-around hurt/comfort whic, while not The Great Spander Novel is, in small and human ways, a delight to read and reread. Julia, just about as good as it could be

"The Magic Number" by Witling (else wiseacres) was a fic that Nan loved; it hasn't updated since October, and today it's finished with a rush of four chapters. The whole story is here. S/X, in an AU Season 4, Xander disappears for a short time and comes back very different from when he left. Spike is a reluctant babysitter. Julia, as with anything by Witling, this is dark, rich, and heartbreaking

My heavens! Did absolutely everyone go on some kind of fic finishing frenzy or something? Not that I'm complaining, mind you!

My heavens! Did absolutely everyone go on some kind of fic finishing frenzy or something? Not that I'm complaining, mind you! It's called the Lynnevitational; the link to the master list is in today's Sunnydale Herald. Julia, and I'll try to get it into the communities thread, soon.

OK, y'all know I don't much ship Angel with anyone, right? And I'm especially chary of Spangel because of the tendency to bad Irish accents and paternalism, in case I've not made that clear. Well, then you know when I come here and say, WOW, you've really GOT to read "On The Rocks" a perfectly dandy S/A, post NFA NC-17-ish hurt comfort with a side of melted butter, well, you know it's got to be something unlike most of the S/A out there, right? And it's not just because Frimfram quotes Douglas Adams along the way, either. Julia, really, shoo, go read!

Trufflemouse is the community made up of Savoy Truffle and Reremouse, both adept writers of Spander, where Spike is a rogue and, often, a bit of a screw-up and Xander is a guy with talents and issues of the more common sort. In And Let the Gods Do the Rest, we have a situation where Xander did not return to Sunnydale after high school, making a life for himself in Oxnard instead, where vampires and demons with bad maps often end up when seeking the Hellmouth. A situation of the protoapocalyptic sort develops about the point of "Him" in an AU s7, and Buffy sends a souled and not-quite-sane Spike to help deal. And the story takes off from there, to end up 13 chapters and an epilogue later after a reordering of s7 which includes a lot of snark, a great deal of sweetness, and a certain strategic amount of NC-17ing. I have a weakness for stories which remix BtVS s7, and this one does so adeptly, without violating canon plot or characterization except in that Spander happens, and has an effect on everyone. Julia, go, read, you'll giggle a lot

OK, trying this backwards, this time, so the permanent rec gets written. Reremouse can write scary angst; Reremouse can write gooey schmoop. But no matter what she writes, she always has a measure of humor. And when she writes primary humor, it's usually with a heaping scoop of surrealism. Wish I Was Here is a brain-twister of mostly PG-13 S/X fever dream world humor, and has been a fun ride for all of its erratically produced ten chapters. Knock yourself out, and go with the flow. Julia, who saves the world from whom why and how are all hilarious. As is the goat-brain curry.

"Still" Humorous, affectionate S/X future ficlet from Nastyshrew, where the only thing R is a very bad dream which wakes Xander too early in the morning: nasty-shrew.livejournal.com/55620.html?style=mineJulia, wishing I had that talent for compact expression

I've been very remiss in getting recommendations up, and will try harder to clean up the backlog. Starting with the most recent and going backwards is about the only way it makes sense for me, especially since it's such a great story. A few months ago, in the Spring for Xander community, SavoyTruffle wrote her first Xander/Giles fic, Why Do You Breathe, which has Giles coming to Africa to find a missing Xander and find out what's wrong. Now, in Summer of Giles, Xander has come to live in London, but he's still not really working for the Council. He worries, Giles worries more. When Buffy shows up to celebrate her birthday away from Rome, where she's just dumped The Immortal, Xander worries about how he's going to explain his aimlessness, and Giles worries that she's going to convince Xander he's wasting his life on an old man. Scar Tissue; link goes to Chapter 1, with each chapter linked to the last. Julia, in-series X/G can be creepy* but post "Chosen," it's a different matter *Except for "Sleep While I Drive" which is marvelous
