Hi, Everyone
One of the nicest things about The Fandom Project is getting to know other Buffy and Angel fans better. Sometimes, when participants return surveys, they tell me little bits and pieces of their lives. Sometimes, it means sharing sadness. Other times, it's good news and virtual champagne all around. Either way, the sharing and bonding with 'verse fans is a wonderful thing; it keeps the community going, spreads love, and, as someone we all know would say, that is definitely, "of the good".
One participant, Kelly Creamer and her best friend, two Chicago members of the fandom, developed a project called SLAYATHON.
The goal was to have Buffistas and Angelites get together, "do good", and raise $$ to help others.
Here's what happened:
Kelly contacted The Make-A-Wish Foundation, and asked if they could do a benefit for them with a Buffy theme. The smart folks at TM-A-WF said yes, and Kelly and Co. created the Slay-A-Thon.
And, now, here's Kelly telling you the rest of the story in her own words:
The first Slay-A-Thon was November 8th 2003 in Chicago. We had a total of 97 people come to enjoy the marathon of videos, auctions and games. We were able to collect over $6400.00 dollars - enough to grant one child's wish.
This year, it was bigger and better. We were able to have 38 Angel and Buffy cast members sign items for our auction. We currently are still totaling the amounts raised on 7/17/04.....close to $10,000 mark and still getting donations!!!!
[This means that] we as Buffy fans will have granted 3 children their wishes through our fandom. It is an amazing event and so rewarding.
The upcoming 2005 Slay-A-Thon will have a couple guests [ from BtVS and AtS} if their schedules permit. So the planning is starting now for 2005.
This year was new for some and the die-hards were back as well. The event had great new games....Trivia Showdown, Buffy 25,000 dollar pyramid, and Buffy buckets (like Bozo's buckets).
We are truly proud to be Buffy fans (I took it once step further with tattooing the logo on my shoulder) that make a difference with our love of Buffy. It means alot to see instant reward for the wish kids. We work with Buffy & Angel everyday now to help others and that is amazing to us!!!
If you're interested in helping plan Slayathon 2005, you can contact Kelly at slayathon@yahoo.com. The benefit runs in the Chicago area, so you Chicago area Buffistas and Angelites - Get out there, get involved, and help plan and raise $$ for kids who will really appreciate it. In the process, you'll meet, greet, and get to know other Buffy and Angel fans, and have a great time.
